When President Donald Trump arrived at
Qasr Al Watan
, the presidential palace in Abu Dhabi, he was greeted with a striking display of Emirati culture that quickly captivated the internet. Dressed in flowing white gowns, dozens of women lined the palace walkway, flipping their long hair rhythmically from side to side while men behind them beat drums and chanted. This dramatic and synchronized performance is known as Al-Ayyala, a traditional cultural dance of the United Arab Emirates. More than a welcome ceremony, Al-Ayyala is a vivid expression of
Gulf heritage
that combines poetry, percussion, and pride.
Al-Ayyala - A UNESCO intangible cultural heritage
Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Al-Ayyala is a traditional performing art popular across the United Arab Emirates and parts of Oman. It blends chanted poetry, drum music, and stylized movement to simulate a scene of unity, strength, and sometimes battle. Typically performed by men in two facing rows wielding sticks or swords, the dance often features women in front, flipping their hair to the rhythm and adding visual elegance to the percussive power of the performance.
A royal welcome for Trump
Trump's recent visit to the UAE as part of his Gulf tour was met with elaborate displays of hospitality, but the Al-Ayyala ceremony at Qasr Al Watan stood out. As Trump walked between the dancers, he remarked, 'What a beautiful city! I love it!' Cameras captured him inspecting the performance with keen interest as women continued their synchronized hair-flipping and men beat drums in the background.
Cultural significance and occasions
Al-Ayyala is not a performance reserved for state visits alone. It is deeply rooted in weddings, national celebrations, and cultural festivals, serving as a symbol of community identity. While traditionally male-dominated, women's participation, especially in public ceremonies, has grown more visible in recent years and showcases evolving gender roles within traditional arts.

Why hair-flipping
In the UAE, unlike in some neighboring countries, there are no laws requiring women to cover their hair. This allows for expressive cultural elements like the hair-tossing in Al-Ayyala. The synchronized flipping of long hair is not just aesthetically dramatic. It adds movement, rhythm, and emotion to the dance, reflecting joy, pride, and unity.
A broader Gulf welcome
Trump's Middle East trip has been nothing short of theatrical. From a fighter jet escort in Saudi Arabia to a Cybertruck motorcade and camel parade in Qatar, each stop has been rich in symbolic gestures. In the UAE, Al-Ayyala served both as a traditional welcome and a soft power statement that highlights heritage, hospitality, and cultural pride.

Anurag Kashyap slams Vijay Subramaniam for announcing ‘made-in-AI' film Chiranjeevi Hanuman: ‘Unforgivable, you should be in gutter'

On Tuesday, Abundantia Entertainment and Collective Artists Network announced a 'Made-in-AI' and 'Made-in-India' project, Chiranjeevi Hanuman – The Eternal. While actors like Ranveer Singh, Pulkit Samrat and Bhumi Pednekar showed excitement by liking the post and dropping a comment, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap seemed extremely frustrated. While he seemed upset about the 'Made-in-AI' claim, he was evidently disappointed in one of the film's producers, who is also his dear friend, Vijay Subramaniam. Earlier, Vikramaditya Motwane had also criticised the move. Anurag Kashyap shared a screenshot of the announcement poster, highlighting Vijay's name and penned a long note. The note ttook a dig at the producer for representing several creators and yet ignoring them all by choosing AI. He wrote, 'Congratulations Vijay Subramaniam. Here is the man head the Collective Artist Network that represents artists, writer, directors , now producing a film made by AI . So much for looking after and representing the interests of creators. End of the day , all these agencies are only interested in making money off you and since they choose turkeys after turkeys for you and you're not making enough for them, they are going all AI.' A post shared by Anurag Kashyap (@anuragkashyap10) He also targeted the actors and wrote, 'Any actor or anyone who calls themselves artists and has a spine will be and should be either questioning him or leaving the agency since he has proved that he thinks you're no match for his AI performance.' According to The Hindu, Collective Artists Network provides services to stars like Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Hrithik Roshan, Kartik Aaryan, Yash and Rashmika Mandanna, among others. The list also includes several musicians, authors as well as over a hundred creators from India's influencer space. Anurag also took an indirect dig at actors supporting the announcement and wrote, 'This right here is the future for the spineless and cowardly so called artists in the Hindi Film industry. Well done Vijay Subramaniam . Shame is not enough on you. You should be in the gutter.' A couple of hours after his post, the filmmaker again took to the comment section of his own post and wrote, 'By all means use AI , if you want to. Nobody can stop AI from taking over every field and the world. My grouse and my genuine grouse is with my friend Vijay Subramaniam , because he is the CEO of KWAN Collective . He represents the artists, the voice of artists and he is producing an AI FILM , when the industry needs corrections , especially from the agencies , who are very responsible for costs going up, actors career paths and writers, musician , filmmakers . He instead of creating more with them , goes out and creates and AI band TRILOk. Him I didn't expect.' The filmmaker admitted that his disappointment in Vijay is the reason behind his anger and frustration with the AI project. 'Not him of all the people. Abundantia is welcome to use AI and so can others if they think that's what it is but Vijay Subramaniam doing it absolutely unforgivable,' wrote Anurag. Anurag's frustration received mixed response, while many hailed him for speaking against the projects, others questioned the reason behind his frustration with some even questioning his credibility as a filmmaker. A user wrote, 'Anurag, let's be honest, your career now survives on noise, not films. After Wasseypur and Raman Raghav 2.0, what have you given this country that people actually pay for? 90% don't step into theatres for your films, they wait for OTT, and even then regret wasting two hours. Your validation comes from film fests, not your own countrymen.' However, speaking to Indian Silicon Valley Jivraj Singh, Vijay shared the motive behind his agency. He told, 'For me, it was always about building a foundation of powering the next generation of content curators and creators of the country.' Vijay's AI film Hanuman is all set to released in 2026 on Hanuman Jayanti. According to Variety, a team of over 50 engineers from Galleri5 (the tech arm of Collective Artists Network) have developed the production. The makers even worked with cultural scholars and literary experts to ensure narrative authenticity. The soundtrack for the film is created by Trilok, which is again billed as world's first AI-powered band. Speaking to Variety, Vijay shared, 'At Collective, we live where culture, creators, and technology converge. With this film, we have the extraordinary opportunity to reimagine cultural storytelling for an audience that cherishes both tradition and innovation. Our approach is rooted in authenticity and cultural stewardship, ensuring complete transparency about the role of AI in the creative process.' Meanwhile, Hanuman's co-producer Abundantia Entertainment is known for producing films like Airlit, Shakuntala Devi, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Ram Setu, among others.

No red carpet, no problem: Raashii Khanna's Mumbai taxi look is so aesthetic

Raashii Khanna effortlessly blends style and simplicity in her recent Mumbai appearance. Donning a powder-blue cottagecore dress, she exuded calm and freshness against the backdrop of a classic Mumbai taxi. Her understated makeup and softly curled hair enhanced her natural glow, proving that fashion can be found even in everyday moments. Raashii Khanna brings a quiet charm to even the simplest moments. No red carpet, no flashing cameras, just a blue dress and a Mumbai taxi, coming together for an understated style moment. The South star and pan-India actress recently posted a few shots from her day in the city, captioned, 'Not all blues are bad, some come with a city view.' The pictures are as serene as the words. Dressed in a powder-blue cottagecore dress, Raashii looked fresh, calm, and completely in her element. The shade worked beautifully against her warm skin tone, and the flow of the fabric added a quiet romance to the frame. Her hair, softly curled and left loose, framed her face without trying too hard. Makeup was barely there, just enough to highlight her natural glow. And then there's the setting, the classic black-and-yellow Mumbai taxi, windows framing the blur of the city outside. That contrast between the rush of the streets and her calm, poised presence made the images so striking. Raashii's style has always been about striking that perfect middle ground. One day she's serving full-on glamour in a sculpted evening gown, the next she's draped in a silk sari that feels timeless yet fresh, and on another day she's strolling around in easy-breezy casuals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 3 minutes, if you own a mouse Undo No matter the outfit, there's a certain ease in the way she wears it, like it belongs to her, not just to the occasion. She never looks as if she's dressed up purely for the cameras; instead, her fashion choices feel lived-in and natural, almost like an extension of her own personality. That's probably why her looks resonate so much because they're not just styled, they are owned. This look is a reminder that fashion isn't only about statement pieces or big events. Sometimes, it's about how you inhabit the everyday. And with Raashii Khanna, even a quick ride across Mumbai becomes its own little style story.

Anurag Kashyap takes direct dig at producer for making AI-generated film Chiranjeevi Hanuman: 'Anyone who has a spine…'

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is not happy with Abundantia Entertainment and Collective Media Network's announcement of an AI-generated film based on Lord Hanuman. The film is titled Chianjeevi Hanuman—The Eternal. Billed as 'Made-in-AI' and 'Made in India', the film is backed by Vijay Subramaniam. Slamming Vijay Subramaniam, one of the film's producers, Anurag Kashyap sarcastically passed a remark for heading the Collective Artists Network and supporting AI. Kashyap wrote, 'Congratulations @vijaysubramaniam84. Here is the man heading the @lifeatcollectiveartistsnetwork that represents artists, writer, directors, now producing a film made by AI. So much for looking after and representing the interests of creators.' The Gangs of Wasseypur director added that agencies are not interested in minting money rather than looking after artists' interests. 'End of the day, all these agencies are only interested in making money off you and since they choose turkeys after turkeys for you and you're not making enough for them, they are going all AI. Any actor or anyone who calls themselves artists and has a spine will be and should be either questioning him or leaving the agency since he has proved that he thinks you're no match for his AI performance," he shared. Kashyap went on to also say Subramaniam "should be in the gutter." 'This right here is the future for the spineless and cowardly so called artists in the Hindi Film industry. Well done Vijay Subramaniam. Shame is not enough on you. You should be in the gutter," he concluded. On Tuesday, Vikramaditya Motwane shared the film's announcement on Instagram. Taking a dig at the makers, he wrote, 'And so it begins… Who TF needs writers and directors when its 'Made in AI'.' Chianjeevi Hanuman is set to release next year on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti. In a statement, Vijay Subramaniam said about the film, 'With this film, we have the extraordinary opportunity to reimagine cultural storytelling for an audience that cherishes both tradition and innovation. Our approach is rooted in authenticity and cultural stewardship, ensuring complete transparency about the role of AI in the creative process.' Meanwhile, Subramaniam is yet to respond to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane's reactions to his film.
