Indore couple goes missing in Meghalaya, abandoned scooter found on hillside

India Today7 days ago

A newly-wed couple from Madhya Pradesh's Indore has gone missing in Meghalaya while on their honeymoon, prompting a large-scale search operation, officials said on Tuesday. This is the second such case of tourists disappearing in the East Khasi Hills district since April.Raja Raghuvanshi, a transport businessman, and his wife Sonam were last seen on May 23. The couple had travelled to Shillong via Guwahati and rented a two-wheeler to visit Sohra (Cherrapunji), roughly 60 km away. The next day, the rented Activa scooter was found abandoned near Sohrarim, a village along a popular scenic route.advertisementThe Raghuvanshis had married in a grand ceremony on May 11 and began their honeymoon on May 20. They visited the Maa Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati before arriving in Shillong.
Raja's mother, Reena Raghuvanshi, said she last spoke to the couple on May 23. "They told me what they ate and where they were going," she recalled. That was the last communication. Calls to both their phones have since gone unanswered, and the devices have remained switched off since May 24.Raja's brother, Sachin Raghuvanshi, initially suspected poor network coverage but grew concerned when contact could not be re-established. A missing persons complaint was filed, triggering a joint search operation involving local police and relatives.Police said search teams are combing forest trails and cliffs popular with tourists. "The region's terrain is beautiful but unforgiving. Dense forests, deep gorges, and slippery slopes make rescue efforts difficult," said a police officer based in Sohra. advertisementThe couple's last known location was traced to Osra Hill in Shillong, a sensitive area where their rented scooter was found near a ditch. A nearby resort, reportedly known for criminal activity, is under investigation.Relatives, including Raja's brother Vipin and Sonam's brother Govind, have flown in from Indore and are assisting in the search. Govind used Google Maps and travel photos to narrow down the location and contacted the rental agency, which confirmed the scooter was hired by the couple and that they had headed toward Osra Hill.Police are also looking into a resort in the area, allegedly linked to local criminal elements. It is yet to be confirmed whether the couple visited or stayed there.Indore Police Commissioner Santosh Singh has assigned DCP Crime Branch Rajesh Kumar Tripathi to coordinate with the Meghalaya Police. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Cabinet minister Tulsiram Silawat spoke to the family and assured them of full state support. The disappearance comes weeks after a similar case involving Hungarian tourist Puskas Zsolt, who was found dead near Ramdait village in April, 12 days after being reported missing. Authorities had ruled out foul play, suggesting an accidental fall.In the wake of Zsolt's death, the East Khasi Hills administration had issued a safety advisory urging tourists to avoid venturing alone into forests, cliffs, and remote trails without certified local guides.

PWD to build 400 toilets along state highways; seeks CSR funds

1 2 Pune: The Public Works Department (PWD) plans to establish around 400 wayside hubs with restrooms and eateries across a 1 lakh kilometre road network in the state in the next two to three months. The department aims to address the acute shortage of restroom facilities along highways. Authorities have decided to leverage Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aid instead of seeking state funds. "We will not seek state funds but partner with private entities interested in the construction, operations, and maintenance of the facilities. We are also in discussion with self-help groups regarding year-round maintenance of these facilities," a senior PWD official said. The decision came after the Bombay high court, in April this year, directed the state govt while hearing a PIL filed by a city-based activist highlighting the lack of toilets on state highways, despite assurances of constructing 400 toilets. The petitioner approached the high court against PWD and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd. (MSRDC), seeking directions for adequate toilet facilities along state highways and the Mumbai-Pune expressway, claiming that such facilities are basic and essential for journeys of two to four hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Click Here Undo The department has identified crucial locations across all districts and the facilities have been planned 30-40km apart. TOI had previously highlighted the shortage of restroom facilities along highways. PWD is now developing a comprehensive mapping strategy to ensure sufficient coverage and enhance journey comfort while addressing crucial infrastructure gaps on state highways. "Wayside amenities are vital as people struggle to locate such facilities on lengthy highway stretches. While the road network expands, basic infrastructure development lags," said Megha Sonawane, a regular biker who raised this issue with the state govt through emails and social media. "Construction of such toilets would particularly benefit women travellers," she said. The sustainability model involves nominal user charges, while some facilities would operate eateries to offset maintenance costs. Around 8-10 such facilities have been planned in each district on major roads. While some facilities are already operational, notably near Ekvira Temple in Karla near Lonavla, sites for other similar facilities are being finalised. In order to help travellers locate the toilet facilities, the PWD plans to develop a mobile application — either integrated with Google Maps or as a standalone app. Regular commuters have, however, expressed concerns about previously announced facilities that often deteriorate without proper maintenance. Activists championing improved toilet conditions emphasised the necessity of third-party inspections for construction and maintenance to ensure proper standards. "Mere construction will not help. There should be a continuous effort made by the state and agencies to maintain these services well," said Seema Mohopatra, a regular traveller and activist. "Toilet facilities are available at Khalapur and Talegaon toll plazas and petrol pumps on the Pune-Mumbai expressway. With expressway expansion planned, three to four additional toilets will be built along the route," an MSRDC official said.

South Western Railway to launch ‘Margadarshak' digital navigation system at more stations

To boost passenger convenience at railway stations, South Western Railway (SWR) has introduced 'Margadarshak', a smart digital navigation system. The system was launched at the SSS Hubballi Railway Station recently. It features a 43-inch multilingual touchscreen kiosk installed near the station entrance. Functioning like Google Maps for the station, the kiosk provides an interactive map that helps passengers to easily locate platforms, footbridges, escalators, drinking water points, waiting halls, catering stalls, and other amenities. 'Passengers can also access the service on their smartphones by scanning QR codes placed across the station. This allows them to identify their location and receive personalised, step-by-step directions to their desired destination within the premises,' Manjunath Kanamadi, chief public relations officer of the SWR, said. Key features of Margadarshak include 24/7 self-service functionality, support for Kannada, English, and Hindi, and a virtual tour of the station. The system is designed to reduce confusion, save time, and significantly improve the passenger experience. Mr. Kanamadi said plans were on to extend the facility to other key stations, including Dharwad, Belagavi, Ballari, Gadag, Koppal, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, and Vasco. Another official explained that Margadarshak offers detailed 2D route maps to help passengers navigate the station and plan their journey with ease. 'The system also features immersive 360-degree 3D views, allowing users to virtually explore the station layout for better orientation. Voice assistance provides real-time, step-by-step directions, while real-time positioning and blue-dot navigation make it easy to track one's location within the station. The app also enables users to quickly identify safety points and emergency exits when required,' official said. Describing it as a significant advantage for travellers, the official added, 'The system ensures a seamless experience for all passengers, including senior citizens.'

Severe floods threaten historic Romanian salt mine

Severe floods threaten historic Romanian salt mine (Photo: AFP) Romanian authorities scrambled Friday to save a salt mine in the northern village of Praid from further damage after heavy rains worsened flooding at a site that provides the region's economic lifeblood. The floods in recent days have swollen a stream near the partially inundated salt mine, which has been shut down since 5 May. The mine is among the biggest tourist attractions in northern Romania, with almost half a million people visiting the site in 2024, and many locals have depended on tourism related to the mine for decades. "We have to save not just the salt mine there, but the entire community, with thousands of people in danger of not being able to put a loaf of bread on the table," environment minister Mircea Fechet told a local TV station Friday, saying "a real tragedy" was hitting the region. According to the National Salt Company, underground stockpiles of salt "have been compromised, including equipment and machinery that can no longer be recovered". Due to heavy rainfall in May, the Corund stream near the Praid mine recorded its highest flow rate in the last 30 years, official data this week showed. But there is no imminent risk of collapse at the mine, said Petres Sandor, an official in Harghita county where the mine is located, which is also home to the largest ethnic Hungarian population in Romania. "The biggest problem is to stop the possibility of water infiltration in order to start the underground work," he said. "A very big danger is related to the state of mind of the population. Unfortunately, it's a feeling of the end of the world," Sandor added, urging tourists not to cancel their reservations. Some locals protested in front of the mine's administrative headquarters on Thursday, voicing anger over preventive measures not having been taken in the past. Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban vowed "financial and practical assistance for the assessment of the damages and reconstruction of the mine" in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
