A gardener in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK suffered a freak accident when he slashed his own neck with a chainsaw while trimming hedges, losing over two litres of blood. Christopher York, 65, lost control of the £120 Bosch chainsaw, which flipped 180 degrees and caused a two-inch gash under his chin, narrowly missing his jugular vein by just 1mm. His wife, Veronika, was mistakenly suspected by police of attacking him after she tried to dispose of the bloodied chainsaw, leading to a brief pre-arrest confusion. Thanks to swift medical intervention and a vascular surgeon on duty, Christopher survived the close call and is now recovering after weeks in intensive care.

Pub owner denies breaching enforcement notice in dispute over green tiles

A pub owner has denied breaching an enforcement notice after historic green tiles were ripped off a pub. Charlie Southall, owner of the Montreal Arms in Albion Hill, Brighton, was ordered to repair or replace the tiles which were taken off by workers in March 2022. Brighton and Hove City Council issued an enforcement notice following the incident, requiring the tiles to be replaced by July 2024. Southall first appeared in court over the saga last month. Today, August 18, he has pleaded not guilty to being in breach of an enforcement notice issued by the council. Southall also requested that the case be transferred to crown court due to "complex legal and factual issues". "The enforcement notice requires the cessation of the removal of ceramic tiles. "There has been a long running back and forth. It's all about the removal of tiles." Southall stated that the dispute rather involved the "reinstatement of the tiles". The magistrates ruled that the case would be sent to crown court. Southall is due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on September 15.

Police confirm Crystal Palace music festival was not shut down due to ‘stabbing'

A music festival in Crystal Palace Park was not ended due to stabbing, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed. Rumours on TikTok and X claimed that the Originals Festival at Crystal Palace Park was shut down due to a knife-related incident yesterday (August 17). However, the police have since confirmed they received no such reports. Crowds attending the festival were asked to leave soon after the closing time. One video posted online shows festivalgoers standing around in as an announcer shouts: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, it has become necessary to close the event early. 'Please return to your vehicles, or meeting points, and exit the site immediately." The festival organisers, South Facing Festival, are yet to respond to these claims or clarify the situation. On X, one person suggested that a "stampede at the gates" led to the festival's closure, with reports of people being trampled. A Met spokesperson said: "On Sunday, 17 August, Met Police officers assisted the organisers of an event in Crystal Palace Park. "Cordons were put in place to ensure the safety of those leaving the area. "No arrests were made." We have contacted South Facing Festival for further details on the incident.
