Astronomers discover giant alien planet 35 times more massive than Earth hiding in a known star system

Scientists have detected a hidden alien planet by examining the orbits of the known worlds in the star system, known as Kepler-139.
The newfound exoplanet, called Kepler-139f, is a gigantic world roughly twice the mass of Neptune and 35 times the mass of Earth, and it takes 355 days to orbit its star, astronomers reported in a study published May 2 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Despite its giant size, Kepler-139f had evaded detection.
That's because the initial yield of NASA's Kepler space telescope, which discovered nearly 3,000 planets in its nine years of operation, relied on worlds transiting — passing between their star and Earth. The resulting dimming of the star allowed astronomers to identify planets and calculate their size. But Kepler couldn't see planets traveling above or below the wedge of space between it and the star, so any outliers remained unseen.
But if the hidden world was part of a multiplanet system, astronomers could try to find it despite its inclined orbit. Kepler-139 has three rocky transiting super-Earths; a fourth gas giant was later discovered. Gaps in their orbits suggested that other worlds might be present. Precise measurements of the orbits allowed the astronomers to infer the existence of at least one more planet.
"The issue is not exactly finding non-transiting planets, but rather, finding situations in which we can deduce where the non-transiting planet is located," Caleb Lammers, a graduate student in the Department of Astrophysical Science at Princeton and co-author of the study, told Space.com by email.
Kepler's initial identification of a world was often followed up by observations from the ground. Using radial velocity (RV), astronomers could measure how much a planet tugged on its star, allowing them to determine the planet's mass. RV measurements could also reveal new worlds, as happened with the outermost gas giant, Kepler-139e.
At the same time, each planet is pulled by not only its star but also by other planets in the system, regardless of whether that planet can be seen from Earth. These pulls can affect how swiftly a planet transits, thus creating "transit timing variations" (TTVs). These variations in the transiting planets can reveal worlds that don't cross the star.
"When you observe TTVs that cannot be attributed to the known planets, you can be fairly confident that there is an unseen body in the system," Lammers said.
Lammers and his colleague Joshua Winn, a participating scientist on the Kepler team and co-author of the study, went looking for gaps in known systems. Then, they used both RV and TTV measurements to hunt for a missing world, revising existing TTVs based on the 2023 discovery of Kepler-139e.
"What was different in the case of Kepler-139 is that we had precise radial velocity observations which did not conclusively point towards a new planet on their own," Lammers said. Combined with the TTVs, the observations revealed a fifth planet, Kepler-139f, tucked between the outermost super-Earth and the gas giant.
The new discovery also helped to answer a question about Kepler-139e. The original reports of Kepler-139c, the outermost super-Earth, provided an unusually large density for a sub-Neptune-size planet.
The discrepancy occurred because those authors didn't know about Kepler139f, so they had attributed some of its pull on its star to Kepler-139c. The new data suggest a more typical density for Kepler-139c while leaving the densities for Kepler-139d and Kepler-139b essentially unchanged. These revisions provide indirect evidence for Kepler-139f, Lammers said.
There may even be other hidden worlds around Kepler-139. "It remains possible that there are other unseen planets in the system," Lammers said, pointing to the prominent gap between planets b and c. "The challenge is finding them!"
Both Kepler and NASA's more recent exoplanet hunting mission, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), were sensitive to planets orbiting closer to their star. These inner worlds were more likely to make many transits, allowing scientists to confirm the planet's existence. But transiting planets with wider orbits made only a handful of passes, so they were more challenging to observe and confirm.
At the same time, the RV method tends to be biased toward larger planets, because the more massive a world is, the stronger it tugs on its star. Proximity helps; the pull of the planet is amplified to the square inverse of its distance. Thus, a planet twice as far away will have only one-fourth the gravitational pull. That's why many of the first discovered exoplanets were Jupiter-size worlds that circled their star in only a few days.

All of these factors make it harder to discover smaller planets that are farther away, particularly if they don't transit their star. But by combining transits, RVs and TTVs, astronomers can find smaller, hidden worlds orbiting farther from their star.
"It is likely that many planetary systems host unseen worlds, especially in their outer regions," Lammers said.
But soon, it will be harder for those worlds to hide. In 2026, the European Space Agency will launch its Planetary Transits and Oscillations of Stars (PLATO) mission, which will conduct its own survey of transiting planets, as well as revisit Kepler's field. In providing additional transit times for planets detected by Kepler more than a decade later, PLATO will improve measurements of TTVs to enable the discovery of more misaligned worlds.
"In the coming years, the TTV planet detection technique will probably be accelerated dramatically by the PLATO mission," Lammars said.

Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: Comet 31/ATLAS is only the third interstellar object to ever be observed whizzing through the Solar System. While its origins are uncertain, the comet is thought to come from a part of the Milky Way populated by some of the galaxy's oldest stars. While its age has not been confirmed, if 31/ATLAS really did originate in that region, it could be 7 billion years old (compared to the Solar System's age of 4.6 billion). Few rogue interstellar objects (ISOs) have entered our Solar System. 'Oumuamua nearly broke the internet in 2017 when it streaked past, and Comet 2I/Borisov was caught trespassing by NASA Hubble Space Telescope in 2019. Now, we have another interloper. Astronomers first observed Comet 31/ATLAS on July 1. Though its origins remain unknown, the researchers who have eyes on it think the flying hunk of ice, dust, and frozen gases came from what is known as the thick disk of the Milky Way. This region of ancient stars—most over 10 billion years old—is scattered in a layer above and below our galaxy's thin disk (which is populated by younger stars). If 31/ATLAS really was born in the thick disk, it might be the oldest comet ever spotted, at around 7 billion years old; that's 3 billion years older than the Solar System. And the way it moves suspiciously up and down in the galactic plane is possibly indicative of an object having originated from and stayed in the disk for literal eons. If we're lucky, it could give us an inside look at the formation of the early Milky Way. This comet is thought to have originally been an icy planetesimal, one of the many smaller bodies that once merged to form planets. How it got to us today, however, is more debatable. '31/ATLAS has physical differences to the first two ISOs detected, but its orbit and incoming velocity place it as a member of the Galactic population of ISOs,' the researchers said in a study, which was recently presented at the Royal Astronomical Society's 2025 National Astronomy Meeting in Durham, England, and posted to the preprint server arXiv. The research team employed a probability simulator that models stellar trajectories using the positions and velocities of every star ESA's Gaia satellite observed between 2014 and 2025 (even the dead ones)—about a billion stars. This—combined with models of protoplanetary disk chemistry and dynamics within the galaxy—allowed them to predicted the velocities, ages, and chemical compositions of the Milky Way's interstellar objects. The experts might be able to determine properties of 31/ATLAS based on which stellar population it came from. Star systems—including our own Solar System—form from protoplanetary disks of gas and dust, and models assume that the properties of these disks are influenced by their stars. The models also suggest that ISOs stray from their stars early on, and disperse within the cold outer edges of a star system. Another model used by the researchers predicts how the velocity of ISOs is related to their age, composition, and other properties inherited from the stellar populations from which they originate. This is how the team figured out a tentative age for 31/ATLAS, and that it probably does not come from the same star as the previous two interstellar objects we've seen. There are still many missing pieces to the origin story of 31/ATLAS. Whether it trekked through space on a relatively undisturbed path, or had its orbit perturbed by different stars is unknown. Despite what has been suggested so far, the comet is still shrouded in gas, dust, and mystery. But because interstellar objects are thought to exist almost indefinitely, they could be carrying particles from just about every star that ever existed in the galaxy. 'ISOs provide the opportunity to gain evidence of the process of planetesimal formation and evolution from a host of galactic environments,' the researchers said. 'Further observations of 31/ATLAS will allow us to [test our] assumptions.' The space organization is offering a challenge for those who think they can solve a capability gap in its Stratospheric Projectile Entry Experiment on Dynamics (SPEED), a two-stage stratospheric drop test architecture. SPEED is under development to bridge the state-of-the-art gap that many NASA flagship missions need to reduce system risk and allow more optimized designs via margin reduction, a NASA press release said. "As current ejection system designs are conceptual, complex and untested, NASA is looking for alternative ideas that can be incorporated into the design of their next iteration of SPEED flight vehicles to increase system reliability," NASA said in a statement. "We are challenging the public to design innovative concepts for a separation mechanism that can be used to assess NASA and commercial re-entry vehicle stability." The winnings: $7,000 in total prizes, including $3,000 for first place. "A successful outcome of this contest is a credible 3D model of a separation mechanism that is both cost-effective by utilizing easy-to-manufacture methods (such as 3D printing or laser/water jet cutting) and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) parts and doesn't rely on high-energy systems like explosives," GrabCAD reported. WASHINGTON — The Trump administration on Monday took another step to make it harder to find major, legally mandated scientific assessments of how climate change is endangering the nation and its people. Earlier this month, the official government websites that hosted the authoritative, peer-reviewed national climate assessments went dark. Such sites tell state and local governments and the public what to expect in their backyards from a warming world and how best to adapt to it. At the time, the White House said NASA would house the reports to comply with a 1990 law that requires the reports, which the space agency said it planned to do. But on Monday, NASA announced that it aborted those plans. 'The USGCRP [the government agency that oversees and used to host the report] met its statutory requirements by presenting its reports to Congress. NASA has no legal obligations to host data,' NASA Press Secretary Bethany Stevens said in an email. That means no data from the assessment or the government science office that coordinated the work will be on NASA, she said. On July 3, NASA put out a statement that said, 'All preexisting reports will be hosted on the NASA website, ensuring continuity of reporting.' 'This document was written for the American people, paid for by the taxpayers, and it contains vital information we need to keep ourselves safe in a changing climate, as the disasters that continue to mount demonstrate so tragically and clearly,' said Texas Tech climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe. She is chief scientist at the Nature Conservancy and co-author of several past national climate assessments. Copies of past reports are still squirreled away in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's library and the latest report and its interactive atlas can be seen here. Former Obama White House science advisor and climate scientist John Holdren accused the administration of outright lying and long intending to censor or bury the reports. 'The new stance is classic Trump administration misdirection,' Holdren said. 'In this instance, the administration offers a modest consolation to quell initial outrage over the closure of the site and the disappearance of the National Climate Assessments. Then, two weeks later, they snatch away the consolation with no apology.' 'They simply don't want the public to see the meticulously assembled and scientifically validated information about what climate change is already doing to our farms, forests, and fisheries, as well as to storms, floods, wildfires, and coast property — and about how all those damages will grow in the absence of concerted remedial action,' Holdren said in an email. That's why it's important that state and local governments and everyday people see these reports, Holdren said. He said they are written in a way that is 'useful to people who need to understand what climate change is doing and will do to THEM, their loved ones, their property and their environment.' 'Trump doesn't want people to know,' Holdren wrote. The most recent report, issued in 2023, found that climate change is affecting people's security, health and livelihoods in every corner of the country in different ways, with minority communities, particularly Native Americans, often disproportionately at risk.
