Javier Mendez: Belal Muhammad's UFC 315 loss caused by issue Khabib Nurmagomedov faced
Javier Mendez disagrees with Belal Muhammad's approach in his UFC 315 title loss, but understands why he did it.
Muhammad (24-4 MMA, 15-4 UFC) opted to predominantly strike in his unanimous decision loss to Jack Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in Saturday's main event at Bell Centre in Montreal. As a result, he suffered a broken nose, orbital bone, and a split lip.
Mendez recalls former undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov's eagerness to show off his striking and prove that he's not just an elite grappler. While Nurmagomedov never paid for it when he stood and traded with Al Iaquinta in their vacant title fight at UFC 223, Muhammad did against Della Maddalena.
"None of us thought that Belal would be able to beat him just standing up, so he wanted to do what none of us thought that he could do, that's what I'm thinking," Mendez told Submission Radio. "I could be wrong, but that's what it appeared like to me that he wanted to stand. He didn't want to implement what got him the title. I used to be on Khabib all the time because Khabib, everybody always criticized him for not being good at striking.
"I'd always keep him on track, but he'd always go off track trying to prove to people that he could stand, and he could stand as the fights went on later. Later, he was able to stand really well – extremely well. But I still didn't like that because I wanted him to go back to what made him the best, and that's the mistake a lot of fighters make. They want to try to prove their point that they can do things that people think they can't do."
Mendez also gave credit to Della Maddalena for his ability to keep the fight on the feet.
"At the same time, too, maybe Jack didn't allow him those opportunities," Mendez said. "But Jack did a great job. He mixes up his punches and his kicks really well, keeps his distance really well, stayed in the middle the majority of the time. He's all around just a really, really good fighter."

UFC's Nora Cornolle: Kayla Harrison 'difficult to beat' but 'not complete' fighter

LAS VEGAS – Like every other competitor in the UFC women's bantamweight division, Nora Cornolle is hunting current champ Kayla Harrison. Cornolle (9-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is currently ranked No. 12 by the promotion, and hopes to crack into the top 10 with a win over Karol Rosa at UFC on ESPN 71 at the UFC Apex on Saturday. Rosa (18-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) currently holds that tenth spot. Every woman in the division is chasing Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC), who won the division's title in June by submitting Julianna Peña at UFC 316. "She's going to be the woman to kill now, like every girl in the top 10, you know?" Cornolle told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday's media day. "I think everybody wants to call her out. I'm not in a hurry. I want the belt, of course, like every female in this category, but step by step." Cornolle, 35, is just entering her fifth fight in the UFC. Harrison claimed the division's title in her third bout, so Cornolle knows the road to the title can be a very quick one. While she says she's not in a hurry to get to a title shot, she has been studying Harrison's game, and sees a path to victory. "She's not complete," Cornolle said. "She has stuff where she's really good at, and maybe difficult to beat in her own game I will say, but there is a way to beat her." First things first, Cornolle has to get past Rosa, who has produced mixed results through her UFC run, but has never lost back-to-back fights – and she's entering this fight after a decision loss to Ailin Perez in January. Check out Cornolle's full media day interview in the video above.

Esteban Ribovics expects first-round finish of Elves Brener at UFC on ESPN 71

Esteban Ribovics is calling a quick finish for his UFC return. LAS VEGAS – Esteban Ribovics expects a quick night at the office. The Argentine UFC lightweight believes he will only need one round to get the job done ahead of his fight against Elves Brener in the main card of UFC on ESPN 71 (ESPN, ESPN+) – which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex. Ribovics (14-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) respects Brener (16-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC), and is aware of his durability, but he's confident he can put him away come fight night. "I see the advantage in my hands," Ribovics said at media day on Wednesday. "I know I have heavy hands, and I know I'm capable of ending the fight in the first round, so I'm going for it. I'm going to use my hands. I know that he has a good jiu-jitsu game and can take a shot, but I don't think this fight is getting past the first round." Should things go his way on Saturday, Ribovics is hoping to get one more fight before the end of the year. He'd like to close out the year with three fights and further himself from his close, split decision loss to Nasrat Haqparast in March. "My plan is to fight again this year, around November, December," Ribovics said. "I want to end the year with three fights for the year. And if it's in a big arena, it would be even better. I get much more fired up fighting in an arena where there's people, and if I'm the visitor, I love it even more.

Caio Borralho: Reinier de Ridder not in title picture, at least three guys ahead of him

Caio Borralho thinks Reinier de Ridder hasn't done enough to enter the UFC title conversation. De Ridder (21-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) outlasted former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker (26-9 MMA, 17-7 UFC) in this past Saturday's UFC on ABC 9 main event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. De Ridder has won four fights in eight months, but Borralho (17-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) doesn't think his resume quite stacks up with rest of the top contenders in the division. "That was a very, very close fight, but I think Whittaker didn't do enough to win this fight," Borralho told Submission Radio. "I think De Ridder actually won the fight even if it was close, but I don't think this is a fight that makes him a backup or in a position to be coming for the belt, or even the loser of (champion) Dricus (Du Plessis) and (Khamzat) Chimaev. There are at least three other guys in front of him in the division. There's Anthony Hernandez, there's me, there's Brendan Allen with 12 wins at middleweight, there's (Nassourdine) Imavov. There's a lot of other guys in front of him. He just beat Bo Nickal and then he beat Whittaker, but to be honest, Whittaker wasn't even there. "I feel like Whittaker is kind of in his last fights, and he wasn't there in the moment – he wasn't present. He was too pressured, you could see it in his face. It's not like you're winning over the Whittaker we know. You're winning over the Whittaker we've never seen before, so it doesn't put him in the position to go for the title or anything like that. I think he needs at least two more fights. And don't get me wrong –– the guy is doing great work. He's finishing his fights. He's very good on the ground. But I don't think he passed through some prime guys in the UFC in the top 10." Borralho revealed that the UFC contacted him to be the official backup for the middleweight title fight between champion Du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 from Chicago. Just a few weeks later, Borralho is scheduled to face Nassourdine Imavov (16-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night main event Sept. 6 in Paris.
