Russian airline explores direct flights to Malaysia for tourism
'We have an airline that is interested in operating flights for tourists. We are in regular dialogue with Malaysia on the matter,' Poteshkin told TASS news agency.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said after talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that both countries were considering the possibility of direct flights, citing increasing tourist exchanges.
The 16th Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum is being held from May 13 to 18 in Kazan.
The 2025 edition will carry the theme 'Digitalisation: A New Reality and Additional Opportunities for Expanding Cooperation.'

Located in the high-tech Tanjung Malim compound in Perak, the plant is now 90.4 per cent complete and equipment installation is at 83.5 per cent, with overall progress at 86.9 per cent. Once completed, the new plant would produce multiple models from the Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform, Proton said in a statement today. Production will kick off with the Proton 7, the first-ever EV from a Malaysian automotive brand, followed by the Proton 5, Malaysia's most anticipated entry-level EV, which is currently being showcased to the public on a nationwide tour. From an initial planned capacity of 20,000 units, the plant could ramp up production to 45,000 units per annum, based on sales demand in Malaysia and overseas markets. To support the ramp-up before launch, the plant's immediate hiring focus is on critical operational and technical roles. To-date, it has hired 30 non-executives, aiming to fully train these key personnel before the full-scale production begins mid-September. The plant would eventually lead to the creation of over 200 new jobs, specialising in EV industrialisation and technical services. Meanwhile, as part of its partnership with Proton, the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (Geely) has provided technical guidance on production systems, helped with equipment selection, and deployed experts to assist with installation and trial runs. Geely has also facilitated overseas training for Proton staff and ensured that the plant aligns with global EV manufacturing standards. Proton's head of Manufacturing Engineering, Wan Yousry Mohamed said the plant is a symbol of Proton's transformation and the group's unwavering commitment to a sustainable, high-tech future. "We are also laying the foundation for Malaysia's leadership in the regional EV landscape by strategically expanding our EV offerings into new overseas markets. Proton's first EV plant in Tanjung Malim nearly ready, production to begin September
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Proton Holdings Bhd said its new electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim is almost complete, with full-scale production scheduled to start in September. In a press release today, Proton said the facility, built within its high-tech compound, has reached 90.4 per cent completion just six months after its groundbreaking in February. Equipment installation is at 83.5 per cent, bringing overall progress to 86.9 per cent. The first model off the line will be the Proton 7, touted as the country's first EV from a Malaysian automotive brand, followed by the 5, an entry-level EV currently on a nationwide roadshow. The plant was designed for scalability, with initial production capacity of 20,000 units annually that can be expanded to 45,000 units depending on demand in Malaysia and overseas markets. It features flexible assembly lines, modular tester systems and optimised logistics for both domestic and export sales. Wan Yousry Mohamed, Proton's head of manufacturing engineering, said the company had completed a machine trial run of its first car body and was in the final stages of equipment calibration ahead of the production launch. 'This trial run is to continuously check on our equipment readiness. We are now in the final stages of preparing the zones for installation and integration. All calibration and validation activities will be carried out progressively to ensure we are fully prepared,' he said. To date, Proton has recruited over 30 non-executive workers with Malaysian Skills Certificate and diploma qualifications, with plans to add more than 200 jobs in EV industrialisation and technical services for the local community. The company is also partnering with Polytechnic Sultan Azlan Shah to align technical training with industry requirements. The plant incorporates dedicated areas for EV-specific needs such as battery assembly, high-voltage safety and electrical testing. Proton said its Chinese partner Geely has provided expertise in production systems, equipment selection and staff training to ensure the facility meets global standards. 'This plant symbolises Proton's transformation and our commitment to a sustainable, high-tech future,' Wan Yousry said, adding that the company aims to position Malaysia as a leader in the regional EV sector.

In conjunction with this golden jubilee and to reflect MCEF's commitment to supporting academically excellent students, MCEF is launching the Mendaki Scholarship — a new flagship initiative designed to provide financial support for academically outstanding and well-rounded young Malaysians who aspire to pursue or are pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses, covering computer science, medicine and health sciences, Artificial IntelligenceI/Machine Learning/Robotics at universities in Malaysia commencing with the 2025 academic year.
