Russia launches biggest wave of strikes on Ukraine for weeks

KYIV — Russia has launched 574 drones and 40 missiles on Ukraine in one of the heaviest bombardments in weeks, Ukrainian officials say. One person was killed in a drone and missile strike on the western city of Lviv, and 15 people were reported wounded in an attack on the south-western Transcarpathia region. The attacks came as US President Donald Trump spearheads diplomatic moves to halt the war, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the strikes highlighted why efforts to bring it to an end were "so critical". President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Ukraine is ready to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in neutral Europe"— in Switzerland or Austria— and he is not against Istanbul either. Zelensky has stated his willingness to meet Putin in "any format", although he has poured cold water on the idea of meeting him in Budapest, which he said "is not easy today". The prospect of direct talks emerged after Trump met Putin in Alaska, and then hosted Zelensky and European leaders at the White House on US president initially suggested trilateral talks involving him, Putin and Zelensky, but has since suggested he might not take part: "Now I think it would be better if they met without me... If necessary, I'll go."Ukraine's air force counted 614 drones and other missiles fired by Russia overnight into Thursday and said it had stopped 577 of them. It is the biggest air attack since Russian strikes tend to focus on eastern regions close to the front lines, the latest attacks hit western areas as well. The foreign minister said hypersonic, ballistic and cruise missiles were among the weapons Ukrainian air force said many of the attacks came from western Russia, as well as from the Black Sea and one missile from Russian-occupied Lviv, where one person was killed, three more were injured in attacks that damaged more than 20 civilian buildings including residential homes and a 15 people were injured when cruise missiles hit a US electronics firm in the far south-western town of Mukachevo in Transcarpathia, not far from Ukraine's borders with Hungary and Slovakia."One of the missiles struck a major American electronics manufacturer in our westernmost region, leading to serious damage and casualties," Sybiha wrote on social media on Thursday. The plant produces coffee machines and other household goods, say to reporters on Thursday, Zelensky said there was still no signal from Moscow that they "truly intend to engage in substantive negotiations" to end the also made clear his lack of enthusiasm for Budapest as a host for potential talks on Thursday, citing Prime Minister Viktor Orban's strong ties with Moscow: "I'm not saying that Orban's policy was against Ukraine, but it was against supporting Ukraine."The idea of the Hungarian capital as a potential venue for peace talks has emerged in recent days and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Budapest was ready to provide "appropriately fair and safe conditions".The Ukrainian leader also said that Russian forces were massing on the southern front line in the Zaporizhzhia region— one of four regions of Ukraine that Russia now claims as its own."We can see that they continue transferring part of their troops from the Kursk direction to Zaporizhzhia."— BBC

Hungary Ready to Host Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks, Foreign Minister Says

Hungary has offered to host peace talks between Russia and Ukraine twice, and the offer still stands, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in a podcast broadcast on Facebook on Thursday. Szijjarto reacted to reports that the White House was eyeing the Hungarian capital Budapest as a venue for a possible trilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump, Russia's Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The US Secret Service was preparing for the summit in the central European nation, with Budapest emerging as a first choice for the White House, Politico reported on Tuesday. "If we are needed, we are ready to provide appropriately fair and safe conditions for such peace negotiations. We are pleased if we can contribute to the success of peace efforts," Szijjarto said in a daily podcast hosting government members. However, the foreign minister denied media reports published on Tuesday, including by Reuters and Bloomberg, that US President Donald Trump called Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to talk about Ukraine's European Union accession after Monday's summit with Ukraine's president and European leaders. "I want to make it clear that there was no such call. There was not. Period," Szijjarto said. A White House official had said that Trump and Orban spoke on Monday regarding Ukraine's talks with the European Union about joining the bloc and also discussed the possibility of Budapest serving as host for talks between Putin and Zelenskiy.

NATO defense chiefs hold 'candid discussion' on security guarantees for Ukraine

BRUSSELS — NATO defense chiefs held a "candid discussion" on Wednesday about what security guarantees they could offer Kyiv to help forge a peace agreement that ends Russia's three-year war on Ukraine, a senior alliance official said. Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the chair of NATO's Military Committee, said that 32 defenSe chiefs from across the alliance held a video conference amid a US-led diplomatic push to end the fighting. He said they had had a "great, candid discussion." "I thanked everyone for their always proactive participation in these meetings: we are united, and that unity was truly tangible today, as always," he said in a post on social media platform X but gave no further details. Assurances that it won't be invaded again in the future are one of the keys for getting Ukraine to sign up for a peace deal with Russia. It wants Western help for its military, including weapons and training, to shore up its defences, and Western officials are scrambling to figure out what commitments they could offer. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov chided efforts to work on security arrangements in Ukraine without Moscow's involvement. "We cannot agree with the fact that it is now proposed to resolve collective security issues without the Russian Federation. This will not work," Lavrov said on Wednesday, in comments carried by state news agency RIA Novosti. Russia will "ensure (its) legitimate interests firmly and harshly," Lavrov added at a news conference in Moscow. US General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO's supreme allied commander Europe who advised during the Trump-Putin summit last week in Alaska, took part in the virtual talks, Dragone said. US General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was also due to participate, a US defence official said. Caine also met with European military chiefs on Tuesday evening in Washington to assess the best military options for political leaders, according to the defence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. US President Donald Trump met last Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and on Monday hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and prominent European leaders at the White House, but neither meeting delivered concrete progress. Trump is trying to steer Putin and Zelensky toward a settlement more than three years after Russia invaded its neighbour, but major obstacles remain. They include Ukraine's demands for Western-backed military assurances to ensure Russia won't mount another invasion in the future. "We need strong security guarantees to ensure a truly secure and lasting peace," Zelensky said in a Telegram post on Wednesday after Russian missile and drone strikes hit six regions of Ukraine overnight. Kyiv's European allies are looking to set up a force that could act as a backstop to any peace agreement and a coalition of 30 countries, including European nations, Japan and Australia, has signed up to support the initiative. Military chiefs are figuring out how that security force might work. The role that the US might play is unclear. On Tuesday, Trump ruled out sending US troops to help defend Ukraine against Russia. Attacks on civilian areas in Sumy and Odesa overnight into Wednesday injured 15 people, including a family with three small children, Ukrainian authorities said. Russian strikes also targeted ports and fuel and energy infrastructure, officials said. Zelensky said the strikes "only confirm the need for pressure on Moscow, the need to introduce new sanctions and tariffs until diplomacy works to its full potential." — Euronews
