Yankees Ripped For Keeping Aaron Boone Over 3-Time Manager Of The Year

The New York Yankees have had very public struggles recently, and seemingly everyone is weighing in on Aaron Boone's job status as a result.
Boone has seen plenty of ups and downs in his eight years at the helm of the Yankees, and ultimately, the fact that the team hasn't won it all opens him up to criticism whenever things are going south. He's also a staunch defender of his players in any situation, which draws the ire of some purists.
But while most of the conversation has centered on whether the Yankees should keep Boone beyond this season, one well-known baseball analyst is taking them to task for retaining him as long as they already have.

Francona came out of a one-year retirement to manage the Cincinnati Reds after a long, fruitful career with the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and Cleveland Guardians.
"These are the New York Yankees. ... I know they didn't want to hire (Bruce) Bochy because then they have to listen to front office and all that nonsense. Francona gets a job again. You are telling me Boone is a better manager than Terry Francona? Are you freaking crazy?" Russo ranted.
"How did Francona end up with the Reds? Did the Yankees put a call in to Francona? 'Hey Terry, we had a bad World Series. Our manager killed us in Game 1.' He killed them in Game 1, guys. And Francona ends up in Cincinnati? Listen, everybody loves Boone. He's not a bad manager, but he has been there a long time (without a) World Series win. In my opinion, there are seven managers in the sport better than Boone. And yet, here he is."
Francona is the three-time American League Manager of the Year, and he oversaw two World Series wins with the Red Sox, including the 2004 run that included a 3-0 comeback in the American League Championship Series against the Yankees.
The general reaction when Francona returned was one of surprise, but the Yankees had also just been to the World Series for the first time under Boone when the 66-year-old was hired. New York was much more focused on trying to retain the services of Juan Soto than it was on luring a Boone replacement out of retirement.
Francona's Reds are 62-58, 1 1/2 games worse than the Yankees. Both teams are fighting for a wild-card spot, so they have little time to dwell on what could have been in the winter.

Yankees Likely to Cut Ties With 7-Time All-Star In Favor of Ben Rice: Insider

Goldschmidt's career was at a crossroads when he signed a one-year contract with the Yankees, coming off a steep decline in his final season with the St. Louis Cardinals. But although he hasn't rebounded to his 2022 Most Valuable Player form, it's clear the 37-year-old still has plenty to offer. Goldschmidt can still pick it on defense, and though his .753 OPS is merely good, not great, he's one of the best platoon bats in the sport with a 1.193 mark against left-handed pitchers. Some team that struggles to hit southpaws will surely want to add him to their lineup. (Photo by New) More Y But will the Yankees have any interest in a reunion? Don't count on it, says Jim Bowden of The Athletic. On Friday, Bowden strongly insinuated that Goldschmidt would leave the Yankees in free agency this winter, due mainly to the emergence of 26-year-old Ben Rice as a starting-caliber first baseman. "Goldschmidt's bat is less potent, but he still plays plus defense at first base and is a strong clubhouse presence," wrote Bowden. "He's hitting .276 with 26 doubles and 10 homers this season and has lowered his strikeout rate 7 percentage points compared to 2024. He'll likely be leaving the Yankees after one year because Ben Rice appears ready to take over first base full-time in 2026." Rice, who has been starting half of the Yankees' games at catcher over Austin Wells of late, has a .783 OPS, 17 home runs, and an impressive 54.8% hard-hit rate this season. With five more years of team control, he's certainly a strong candidate to usurp Goldschmidt's job in a full-time capacity. If that's the case, then Goldschmidt can simultaneously thank the Yankees for rejuvenating his career and try to make them look foolish for letting him go. After all, someone will want a seven-time All-Star in their clubhouse. More MLB: Mets Predicted to Lose 5-Time All-Star Pete Alonso in Free Agency Surprise

Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts' 'Hyperforcused' Comment Will Fire Up Padres Fans

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres will square off this weekend, and though it's the former who got a World Series trophy last year, the latter suddenly seems to have the upper hand. After making up 10 games in the standings in just over a month, the Padres hold a one-game lead in the National League West entering Friday's series opener. As the Dodgers get set to defend their home turf, their manager had an intriguing message about their chief rival. (Photo by)Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, in anticipation of the matchup, that he believes the Padres are "hyperfocused" on the Dodgers, strongly suggesting that they circle these games on their calendar and show more intensity than they do in most matchups. "I think that the rivalry part is certainly real," Roberts said this week, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. "Which brings emotions. "I do think it's one of those things where they're very hyperfocused on us. But I guess it's a compliment. Still, we've got to match their intensity because they want to beat us more than anything." In the last series the two teams played, Roberts was ejected from a game, then in the next contest, Padres manager Mike Shildt came charging out of the dugout after the Dodgers hit Fernando Tatis Jr. with a pitch, barking at Roberts. The bad blood is sure to add some spice to these crucial contests. "I never want to make it about me, I really don't," Roberts said of the dustup, per Ardaya. "I just took offense to his response towards me. I thought it was directed at me. But I just want to go out and play good baseball. That's kind of where my head's at." The big story may not be about Roberts, but the Dodgers as a whole simply have to play better. The National League West has been theirs to lose for the last decade, and they'd have no one to blame but themselves if the Padres usurped them. Roki Sasaki Offers 2-Word Response on Returning to Dodgers

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers have endured a slip in the standings as their pitching woes persist. The team has lost several notable hurlers to the injured list throughout this season, including Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Tanner Scott and Michael Kopech. Most recently, the team's trade deadline reinforcement Brock Stewart went down after just four games with the Dodgers. The team is remaining optimistic that its pitching staff will be healthy enough come playoff time, with several arms expected back soon. However, one of their biggest pending reinforcements suffered a setback on Thursday. "Beginning a rehab assignment for Triple-A Oklahoma City, Sasaki needed 41 pitches to record six outs and failed to retire the two batters that he faced in the third inning," Jared Greenspan reported for "The Dodgers had originally hoped Sasaki could complete three innings." (Photo by) More After joining the Dodgers as a minted star from Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league, Sasaki struggled with his fastball velocity and command before being shut down with a shoulder problem. In his latest rehab start, he failed to strike anyone out and saw that velocity fall once again. The Dodgers won't bring back Sasaki until he can log a longer start in the minors. But after this latest outing, he offered two words on whether he'd like to hurry back to the big-league club. "Of course," Sasaki replied, per a translation from Dodgers Beat. "As a baseball player, if I'm not pitching in games and contributing, it feels like I'm not doing my job," Sasaki added, according to the translation. "But I can't just rush back — I need to focus on what I have to do right now. I have both the desire to return quickly and the understanding that I need to prepare properly before I do." Though Sasaki is eager to contribute to the Dodgers, it seems pretty clear that he isn't ready to do so after his latest turn on the mound. And at this point, it's far from certain that he'll be able to make it back to the majors at any point this season. More MLB: Mets' $34 Million Addition Breaks Silence on Harsh Move: 'Not Happy'
