
National Program for Identifying Gifted Students begins in North Al Batinah
Sohar - The first phase of the fourth edition of the National Program for Identifying Gifted Students, "Tharwa 4," has commenced today in North Al Batinah Governorate.
Hamad Saif Al Maamari, Director of the Department of Special Education and Continuous Education at the Directorate General of Education in North Al Batinah, stated that 31 schools in the governorate have been selected for the initial phase of the program, targeting approximately 1,974 male and female students. The implementation period will extend until 8 May 2025.
He explained that the program aims to identify students with high cognitive abilities linked to creativity and innovation by assessing their intelligence and creative potential. This will help determine the needs of gifted students and develop specialized enrichment programs to nurture them both within and outside school settings. The initiative aligns with global trends emphasizing the importance of supporting gifted students, harnessing their capabilities, and building a comprehensive, updated digital database to track their progress, classify their achievements, and document their contributions.
Al Maamari further clarified that the identification and selection process follows clear, systematic criteria based on standardized tests and assessments. These tools measure students' abilities across academic, skill-based, and creative dimensions, ensuring accurate and realistic results. This approach contributes to providing integrated development and care for gifted students.

Muscat schools launch inaugural 'Arts Challenge' to discover young talent
Muscat – The first edition of the Arts Challenge initiative for school students in Muscat Governorate began today at Mazoon College in the Wilayat of Seeb. Organised by the Directorate General of Education in Muscat, the three-day event aims to discover and support artistic talent among schoolchildren across the capital. Safiya bint Saif al Ghafri, School Activities Supervisor at the Directorate, stated that 240 male and female students from various schools are taking part. 'Participants have been divided between two venues: Mazoon College is hosting students from grades 4 to 8, while Scientific Design College will welcome students from grades 9 to 12, with the initiative concluding on Thursday,' she said. Ghafri added that the challenge is not only a platform for competition but also a means to build a central database of talented students. 'Our goal is to identify and support gifted individuals by offering them training sessions, competition opportunities, and participation in exhibitions.' The Arts Challenge covers a wide spectrum of visual arts, including drawing (in pencil, charcoal, ink, and colour), sculpture using various materials, design, digital illustration, photography, and Arabic calligraphy. 'This initiative enables the nurturing of skills at all levels, with the aim of preparing students to represent their schools, the governorate, and the Sultanate of Oman in both local and international art competitions,' Ghafri explained. Plans are also underway to hold an annual exhibition showcasing the work of the most outstanding participants. The Arts Challenge marks a significant step forward in enhancing the creative development of youth in Oman and reinforcing the country's commitment to arts education.

Community event in Muscat to promote reading culture
Muscat: The Directorate General of Education in Muscat Governorate, represented by the Educational Supervision Department's Learning Resources Centre, in cooperation with the Omani Women's Association in Al Amerat and the Omani Sociologist Association (OSA), organised a community event under the theme 'A Reading Society for an Aware Future.' The initiative was held at the Association headquarters in Al Amerat. The event was held in the presence of Dr Yousuf al Nadabi, Director of the Educational Supervision Department, and Younis Al Hooti, Senior Learning Resources Supervisor, and it brought together students from schools across the wilayat, along with teachers, parents and representatives from the local community. Organised by learning resources specialists from various schools in the governorate under the supervision of Nasra bint Mohammed Al Oufi, Learning Resources Supervisor, the initiative aimed to foster a culture of reading within both school environments and the wider community. It also sought to enhance students' skills in knowledge acquisition and innovation, while highlighting the role of learning resources centres in supporting education in line with Oman Vision 2040. The event featured a range of educational and interactive corners designed to engage participants of all age groups, including the Young Reader's Corner, Omani Author's Corner, Omani Encyclopedia, Free Reading and Drawing, Educational Games, Creative Workshops, Special Needs, Artificial Intelligence and Technology Corner, and E-Knowledge Corner. Each corner offered enriching activities that combined learning with creativity and entertainment, contributing to the development of students' reading habits, critical thinking, and independent learning skills. Nasra al Oufi noted that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to create a dynamic and modern reading environment by positioning learning resource centres as key components of the educational process. 'We aim to connect students with knowledge through engaging and contemporary methods,' she said. The event was well received by attendees, who commended the diversity of content and the overall quality of the event.
