Big Trouble in Little China star Peter Kwong dead at 73
A Sacramento native, Kwong launched his screen career in the late '70s, landing roles in popular series like The A-Team, Wonder Woman, Little House on the Prairie, and Miami Vice. His breakout came with Big Trouble in Little China, where he starred alongside Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall.
Though the film flopped at the box office—earning just $11 million on a $20 million budget—it later gained cult status. Kwong also appeared in 1986's Never Too Young to Die, opposite John Stamos and Vanity, and had a role alongside Eddie Murphy in The Golden Child.
Kwong was deeply involved in the entertainment industry beyond his acting work, per Variety . He spent over a decade serving on the SAG National Board of Directors and was also part of the AFTRA National Board. His dedication extended to leadership roles within the Television Academy's Board of Governors and the Actors Branch Executive Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Tributes and condolences poured in across social media, with fans fondly remembering Kwong's iconic role in Big Trouble in Little China. One fan wrote, 'Oh no. Condolences to his family,' while another added, 'These Asian actors who played the 3 gods are so iconic. I am not sure of the reality but I suspect this motivated Mortal Kombat's Raiden.' Yet another chimed in, 'Wang vs Rain fight scene was bad ass! Rest in peace!'
Kwong, born April 9, 1952, launched his acting career in the mid-1970s and quickly became a familiar face on television with roles in Wonder Woman, Black Sheep Squadron, and throughout the '80s with appearances on Cagney & Lacey, Dynasty, The A-Team, Miami Vice, and many others. Trained in both comedy and drama through institutions like East West Players and The Groundlings, Kwong sustained a steady career well into the 2020s. His film work included titles such as The Presidio, Gleaming the Cube, Paper Dragons, Cooties, and I'll Do Anything.
On television, he took on a wide range of guest roles in shows including General Hospital, JAG, Sisters, Drake & Josh, The Wayans Bros., Lethal Weapon, and King of the Hill. 'He had a wonderful life and career,' Kwong's longtime friend Peter R.J. Deyell told Deadline . 'I watched him fight for the things he believed in, and I championed him for that. At the TV Academy, we were both very active and sometimes joked about being in the Pin Club as we always wore our pins. He was always a gentleman and willing to help.'
An outspoken advocate for representation, Kwong was among those who signed a 2016 letter denouncing racially insensitive jokes during that year's Oscars. Reflecting on the moment, he told Deadline: 'I was there at the Academy Awards, and I was shocked because [Academy President] Cheryl Boone-Isaacs went up and talked about diversity and then right after that comes the jokes from Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen. Some people have the attitude, "Why can't you have a sense of humor?' and 'in humor there are no boundaries." It's because it gives people permission to not only continue it but to escalate it as well.'
The Academy eventually issued an apology for the 'tone-deaf' portrayal of Asians during the broadcast. Kwong was honored in 2023 with the Snow Leopard Award for Outstanding Cinematic Achievement at the Asian World Film Festival, a recognition that capped off his decades-long contribution to film, television, and advocacy.

US Senate rejects bids to block arms sales to Israel over Gaza
WASHINGTON, July 30 (Reuters) - Two resolutions that would have blocked arms sales to Israel in response to civilian casualties in Gaza were blocked in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, although they garnered more support than similar measures earlier this year. The two resolutions were introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent aligned with Democrats. They failed by 73 to 24 and 70 to 27 in the 100-member chamber in voting late on Wednesday night. Similar measures, also introduced by Sanders, failed by 82-15 and 83-15 in April. A decades-long tradition of strong bipartisan support for Israel in the U.S. Congress means resolutions to stop weapons sales are unlikely to pass, but backers hope raising the issue will encourage Israel's government and the U.S. administration to do more to protect civilians. All of the votes for the resolutions came from Democrats, with all of President Donald Trump's fellow Republicans opposed. Sanders said in a statement he was pleased that a majority of the Democratic caucus had backed the effort. "The tide is turning. The American people do not want to spend billions to starve children in Gaza," Sanders said. "The Democrats are moving forward on this issue, and I look forward to Republican support in the near future." Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was one of the Democrats who opposed the Sanders-backed resolutions in April but voted for them this time. Shaheen said in a statement that Israel has a right to defend its citizens, but added: "it is clear that the Government of Israel has not conducted its military operations in Gaza with the necessary care required by international humanitarian law. It is also clear that the Government of Israel has failed to allow adequate humanitarian assistance into Gaza, resulting in unbelievable suffering." The resolutions would have blocked the sale of $675 million in bombs and shipments of 20,000 assault rifles. Senator Jim Risch of Idaho, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a speech opposing the resolutions that the militant group Hamas was to blame for the situation in Gaza. "It is in the interest of America and the world to see this terrorist group destroyed," he said. Israel has consistently said its actions in Gaza are justified as self-defence and accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields, a charge Hamas denies. The U.S. Senate vote came as France and Canada have indicated they plan to recognize a Palestinian state amid growing international outrage over the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Britain has also said it would recognize the state at September's U.N. General Assembly meeting if the fighting in Gaza had not stopped by then. Israel's military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, destroyed much of the enclave and led to widespread hunger. A global hunger monitor has warned that a worst-case scenario of famine is unfolding in the enclave. The war began after Gaza's dominant Palestinian militant group Hamas carried out a cross-border attack on southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. Israel's subsequent air and ground campaign has leveled entire neighbourhoods in Gaza and displaced most of the population of 2.3 million. Israel says its operations are aimed at dismantling Hamas' military capabilities and securing the release of hostages.

‘Panama Playlists' claims to expose Spotify libraries of JD Vance, Pam Bondi and other prominent figures
A new site called 'Panama Playlists' has claimed to expose the Spotify accounts of prominent figures including Vice President JD Vance and Attorney General Pam Bondi. The site, which the New York Post says quietly went live Wednesday, is run by an anonymous sleuth who claims they have been 'scraping' accounts of celebrities, politicians and journalists since the summer of 2024. The sleuth said their team has access to 'playlists, live listening feed, everything. I know what songs they played, when, and how many times.' 'Heard of the Panama Papers? That exposed offshore bank accounts. This is about onshore vibes,' the site read. So, what did the sleuth claim to find? Vance is into boy bands with Backstreet Boys' 'I Want It That Way' and One Direction's 'What Makes You Beautiful' on his playlists, according to the site. Bondi loves her 2000s hits, including Nelly's 'Hot In Herre,' Black Eyed Peas' 'I Gotta Feeling,' and Usher's 'Yeah!' the sleuth claims. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had a playlist labeled 'Baby Shower,' which included strong female singers such as Beyoncé's 'Run the World (Girls) and Aretha Franklin's 'Respect,' per the site. The Independent has reached out to the White House for comment. The sleuth told the New York Post, 'I gained confidence in each person by looking at lots of signals. 'An example is Pam Bondi. Her longtime partner is John Wakefield, and her profile has an old playlist called 'john' and an old shared playlist with a user named 'John Wakefield,' so that gives me a lot of confidence it is her account.' Leavitt's apparent 'Baby Shower' playlist was also mentioned in the interview with the sleuth, saying, 'She had a baby a month after the playlist was made.' The sleuth told the New York Post only publicly available information was collected. A Spotify spokesperson told The Independent if the sleuth is using a Spotify account to scrape information from public playlists, they are violating the company's Terms of Use. The guidelines the spokesperson referenced prohibit making available to the public any content made available through the music streaming service. There were also prominent figures outside of Washington mentioned in the 'Panama Playlists,' such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The tech executive's 'My Shazam Tracks' playlist includes David Guetta, OneRepublic's 'I Don't Wanna Wait' and Missy Elliott's 'Get Ur Freak On,' according to the site. The sleuths also listed some 1970s songs late-night host Seth Meyers is claimed to enjoy: Jackson Browne's 'The Fuse' and Rickie Lee Jones' 'Chuck E's in Love.' NBC weatherman Al Roker is an Elton John fan, the website claims. 'Panama Playlists,' said his No. 1 song of the past year is John's 'Philadelphia Freedom,' followed by 'Are You Ready for Love.' NBA legend pokes fun at his arrest for illegal gambling in bizarre video after being released from jail on $50k bond
Former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas has poked fun at his arrest for allegedly running an illegal gambling operation after sharing a video on social media. The case against him was announced by the US Attorney's Office for the Central District of California on Wednesday afternoon. However, during a court appearance, Arenas pleaded not guilty and was released pending trial after paying a $50,000 (£38,000) bond. The former Wizards star then swiftly took to social media to address fans and followers for the first time, as he triumphantly claimed: 'They can't hold me'. A video posted by Arenas showed him leaving the police department and joyfully walking down a set of stairs, while a woman behind the camera shouted: 'Free!' The caption to the post, on Arenas' Instagram, read: 'Im Back on the Block like its HOT. Named alongside Arenas - known in his playing days as 'Agent Zero' - are five co-conspirators who have been charged with operating and illegal gambling business. The other five people charged are as follows: Israeli suspected organized crime figure Yevgeni Gershman, 49, Evgenni Tourevski, 48, Allan Austria, 52, Yarin Cohen, 27, and Ievgen Krachun, 43. Along with Arenas, those five were detained without incident by LAPD, Homeland Security, and the IRS. If convicted, the defendants face a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each count. Arenas was arraigned on Wednesday afternoon after appearing in a Los Angeles court for the first time. Trial is scheduled for September 23. An unsealed indictment reveals that from September 2021 to July 2022, Arenas rented out a mansion that he owned in Encino - north of Hollywood - 'for the purpose of hosting high-stakes illegal poker games', according to officials. The US Attorney's Office says a man named Arthur Kats staged the mansion to host the games 'at Arenas' direction' and also 'found co-conspirators to host the games, and collected rent from the co-conspirators on Arenas' behalf.' Officials say that the operation even included a poker felt labeled 'ARENAS POKER CLUB' - featuring an image of Arenas in his basketball uniform and his No. 0. 'Gershman, Tourevski, Austria, and Cohen managed illegal "Pot Limit Omaha" poker games, among other illegal games, at the Encino mansion, collected a "rake" - a fee the house charged from each pot either as a percentage or a fixed amount per hand - and invited players to compete,' officials say. Krachun, meanwhile, worked as a "chip runner" - tracking the wins and losses of the players involved, distributing poker chips, and paying employees. Gershman has been accused of hiring young women to serve drinks, provide massages, and offer companionship to the players in exchange for tips. These women were also charged a 'tax' - a percentage of their earnings from working the games. Additionally, chefs, valets, and armed security guards were hired. Beyond the games, Gershman has also been charged with three additional counts: conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, marriage fraud, and making a false statement on an immigration document. Gershman faces these charges alongside 35-year-old Valentina Cojocari - who he is alleged to have conspired to enter into a sham marriage with for the purpose of obtaining permanent legal status in the US. Arenas is the former owner of a five-bedroom, five-bathroom mansion in Encino located at 4550 Gable Drive that he sold in December of 2022, after the gambling business is believed to have ended. Authorities say this is where the operation was run. He sold the mansion for $3.1million. The property features lavish views and outdoor spaces (including a pool and a hot tub), a massive kitchen, and a three-car garage among other amenities. Arenas previously tried selling the property for as much as $3.8m. This is not the first time that Arenas has run afoul of the law. Most notably, Arenas was suspended for a total of 50 games in the 2009-10 season for bringing a firearm into the Wizards locker room and drawing it on teammate Javaris Crittenton in an argument about gambling debts. Police investigated the incident and charged Arenas with carrying a pistol without a license. He was sentenced to two-years probation and 30 days in a halfway house. In June of 2013, the LAPD arrested Arenas for possession of illegal fireworks. Off the court, Arenas has made a number of controversial racial statements about European players entering the NBA and about international stars from Africa . In the aftermath of Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green punching then-Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in December of 2023, Arenas appeared to praise him .
