#SHOWBIZ: Sofyank teams up with HK superstar Louis Koo in viral promo

KUALA LUMPUR: A surprise collaboration between Hong Kong screen legend Louis Koo and Malaysia's very own VFX prodigy Sofyank has taken local social media by storm, following the release of a promotional video for Koo's film Behind The Shadow. The impressive 50-second spot racked up over a million views in just 12 hours, and for Sofyank, the experience was surreal. "Louis is one of the first Hong Kong actors I've ever worked with. I grew up watching his movies — to now share the screen with him feels like a dream come true," shared Sofyank. Despite Koo's packed schedule, the video shoot was completed in 20 minutes. "He looked really serious at first, but he was incredibly down-to-earth. In fact, it was he who suggested some comedic moments — including the popcorn bit," added Sofyank. The video features Sofyank walking through a cinema hallway holding popcorn, before accidentally bumping into a crowd and dropping it. Koo "steps out" of a movie poster and hands him a fresh box — while dropping some Bahasa Malaysia lines in his Cantonese-accented voice: "Jom sapot!" (Let's support!). Netizens praised their pairing as refreshing and heartwarming. "We asked Louis if he'd be willing to try speaking in Malay, even though it's not a language he's familiar with — and he was totally up for it," said Sofyank. Behind The Shadow was shot entirely in Malaysia, with a cast and crew of nearly 100 local talents. Koo previously shared his admiration for Malaysia's film industry, noting its professionalism, quick pace and strong creative energy. "I was impressed by how committed and responsive the Malaysian crew were. It was great to see how they handled spontaneous scenes so well," he said. Sofyank said: "This film proves that it's not just Western studios, but also those in Asia, that now recognise Malaysia's potential. I hope to bring Malaysian creativity to the global stage. And I'm thrilled to see more international filmmakers acknowledging our local talent." Behind The Shadow stars Koo as a detective entangled in a mysterious crime filled with suspense and unexpected turns. The film is set in recognisable Malaysian locations — from bustling night markets and food courts to schools, pedestrian bridges and urban backstreets. Behind The Shadow officially opens in cinemas today.

Labubu toy sculpture sold for US$150,000 at China auction

SHANGHAI: A Beijing auction house has sold a four-foot-tall sculpture of a viral plush toy character for more than US$150,000, as global demand for the Chinese-designed Labubu dolls reaches fever pitch. The rabbit-like figures sporting mischievous grins began as a character created by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung, and are made by Beijing-based toy brand Pop Mart. They have been endorsed by celebrities such as Rihanna and Dua Lipa, and fans have queued overnight outside stores hoping to snag one, with analysts pointing to the phenomenon as evidence of China's growing soft power. On Tuesday, a teal sculpture depicting a Labubu character with a furry body and head fetched an eye-watering 1.08 million yuan (US$150,260) at an auction held in Beijing, according to the auction house's app. The sculpture is "the only piece of its kind in the world", according to Yongle International Auction. It was offered alongside other Labubu paraphernalia including a brown statue that sold for 820,000 yuan. Pop Mart has over 400 stores globally, including 30 US branches. The worldwide frenzy has seen people go to desperate lengths to acquire their own Labubu. Last month a London branch of Pop Mart suspended in-store sales of the toys, fearing violence from would-be buyers who failed to get their hands on the limited-edition Labubus. In Singapore, CCTV footage captured a family stealing Labubu dolls from a claw machine, according to Singaporean online media outlet AsiaOne. Burglars broke into a store in California last week and took several Labubu dolls along with electronics and other valuables, American news outlet ABC reported. In China, the toys have been promised as freebies for new bank customers – an incentive quickly shut down by local regulators, according to Chinese media reports. The toys have spawned a booming resale market as well as an online community of fans sharing tips on how to customise their dolls. Knockoffs – many of which are also made in China – have flooded online platforms, dubbed "Lafufus" by social media users.

#SHOWBIZ: HK actor Chapman To celebrates 20th wedding anniversary with actress Kristal Tin

HONG KONG: Taiwanese actor based in Hong Kong Chapman To and former TVB star Kristal Tin recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary with a small gathering of close friends. Among the guests was veteran actor Anthony Wong, who travelled specifically to Taiwan to join the couple for their milestone celebration. On 7 June, To, 53, shared a throwback photo on social media from his 2005 wedding to Tin, 47. The picture showed them surrounded by famous friends like Andy Lau, Wong Jing, and Shawn Yue. The couple originally tied the knot in June 2005 after dating for six years. "Today, 20 years later, some people remain while others have moved on. I wish everyone happiness. To me, happiness means letting go of the past, not worrying about the future, and simply embracing the present moment," To captioned his Facebook post. The Hong Kong-born artiste also uploaded a photo with Anthony Wong to his Instagram Story, noting that the 63-year-old is the only groomsman he's still in touch with after two decades. He rounded off the celebration by posting a short video of Tin speaking about how he had transformed her life. Meanwhile, Tin took to Instagram to reflect on how her understanding of the word "tolerance" has changed over the years. The Brother's Keeper (2012) star admitted she once viewed the term negatively, saying: "Why do I have to tolerate things after marriage? Didn't we love each other so much that we couldn't help but be together in the first place?" However, Tin shared that her perspective has now shifted. She no longer sees tolerance as putting up with flaws, but rather as peacefully accepting them. "Happy 20th anniversary. Please continue to give me your guidance in the future," she wrote, alongside a photo of herself with To and their pet bulldog.
