Nun arrests: BJP caught between rock and a hard place as Kerala Church body slams party

Indian Express5 days ago
AS THE two Kerala nuns arrested on charges of forced conversion and human trafficking in Chhattisgarh remain behind bars, a powerful body of Catholic bishops in Kerala Wednesday indicated that any prospective 'friendship' with the BJP rests on the issue.
Addressing reporters, Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) president Cardinal Baselios Cleemis expressed unhappiness over the denial of bail to the two nuns, and said: 'If no justice is done, then what friendship can there be? How can we speak of perfect brotherhood?'
On Wednesday, the Catholic Church also took out a march to the Raj Bhavan, with bishops, priests and nuns joining in. Elsewhere across the state too, the followers of the Catholic Church held protests against the arrest of the nuns on charges of conversion.
The stand of the KCBC, which comprises heads of all 43 Catholic dioceses in the state, underlines the dilemma the BJP finds itself in – torn between the Sangh Parivar's anti-conversion narrative, and its own electoral ambitions in Kerala, which rest on the party winning over the substantial Christian vote bank.
In a message directed at the BJP, Cleemis said: 'We are closely watching the situation… Do what you say and be sincere in your actions. This is what we are looking for. Our concern is justice for the nuns.'
Addressing the Raj Bhavan march, the Cardinal took on the conversion charges against the Church, saying: 'We are not going to close the gospel in the country. Our tongues have strength to proclaim the gospel and that will continue.'
At another event, Palakkad Bishop Peter Kochupurakkal attacked the BJP's Christian 'appeasement'. 'There are certain political Dhritarashtras (the blind Mahabharata king) who move in and out of our churches and our liturgical functions. They go to church and donate golden crowns to statues. They are present at all functions. We have to recognise such people. We have to recognise their Dhritarashtra hugs,'' Kochupurakkal said, in an apparent dig at BJP MP Suresh Gopi, who donated a golden crown to a church in Thrissur, the constituency from which he won in 2024.
The Catholic Church seems to be hardening its stand against the BJP both because the nuns are from Kerala, and because the Church leadership wants to repudiate the allegation that it has adopted a soft line towards the BJP. Unlike in Kerala, the BJP is viewed largely with suspicion by the Christian community elsewhere, who accuse it of anti-minority bias.
Earlier, when Stan Swamy, a Jesuit priest from Tamil Nadu who was jailed over alleged Maoist links, died behind bars, the subdued reaction of the Catholic Church in Kerala had been remarked upon.
The interaction of Bishops and other Christian dignitaries with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a Christmas event had also drawn flak from a section of the faithful in Kerala as it came months after violence began in Manipur, with Christian tribals seen at the receiving end of violence.
Meanwhile, even within the Sangh Parivar in Kerala, not many are keen on the stance taken by BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar dismissing the allegations against the nuns in Chhattisgarh. Chandrasekhar's statement has drawn sharp reactions from some Sangh Parivar handles, who said the party ruling the country should not water down its stand for 'a few (Christian votes)' in Kerala.

Speaking on the first day of the monsoon session of Delhi Assembly during a debate on operations Sindoor and Mahadev, Gupta said Operation Sindoor was a befitting reply to Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack in which some women had lost their loved ones, asserting that PM Modi played a huge role in protecting the dignity of "our sisters". Hitting out at the opposition INDIA bloc, CM claimed, "These people do not love Bharat, but they love anti-national forces because they see their own reflection in them." She alleged, "The name is INDIA, but if you listen to them, it feels like they are spokespersons for Pakistan… They do not trust their own Army, their own Prime Minister, but they trust foreign countries." I want to ask the BJP-led central govt whether the cost of business with America is more than the sindoor of our sisters. " The former CM questioned why the operation was stopped at a crucial juncture. Before being marshalled out, AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha criticised the central govt for accepting the cease-fire decision made by US president Trump. "Operation Sindoor was an opportunity... to take back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir." Home minister Ashish Sood said the two operations represented the new normal in response to terror attacks. "After terrorist attacks, dossiers are not sent any longer; instead, the Army is given a clear order to eliminate the enemy." Those questioning the two operations should be tried on sedition charges, he said. Minister Kapil Mishra said AAP leaders shed tears whenever a terrorist was killed. "The talk of taking back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir started only after PM Modi took charge." BJP MLA Shikha Rai demanded that Operation Sindoor be made part of the school curriculum. BJP's Arvinder Singh Lovely said India had become such a country that didn't bow down to terrorism any more.

Amid deadlock, PM to address NDA parliamentary party meeting today

. NEW DELHI: Amid the ongoing logjam in Parliament, PM Narendra Modi will address the BJP-led NDA parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, a get-together of the alliance's MPs that is being held after a considerable gap, and the first during the current session of Parliament. The NDA meeting also holds significance as filing of nomination papers for the election to the vice-president of India's post begins from Aug 7. The BJP-led bloc will have to announce its candidate - whose election to the post will be a certainty due to the alliance's majority in the electoral college - by Aug 21, the last date of nomination-filing and the monsoon session of Parliament. The electoral college for the vice-president poll includes MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and its current strength is 782. If the opposition also names a candidate - a distinct possibility - then the poll is scheduled to be held on Sept 9. The meeting comes in the middle of a session which has been a washout so far, except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, due to a united opposition's continuous protest against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar by Election Commission. PM Modi is expected to speak on a host of issues as the opposition has been raising the heat over the poll body's alleged partisan conduct favouring govt, and the terror attack and Operation Sindoor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like With temperatures hitting 95°F, this is the mini air conditioner everyone's buying in the U.S News of the Discovery Undo Sources said Modi may ask alliance MPs to counter the opposition's narrative and also boost the 'Tiranga Yatra' being organised in view of Independence Day. The parliamentary party is also likely to felicitate the PM for the success of Operation Sindoor and neutralisation of the terrorists involved in the attack. Since the 2024 LS elections, when BJP lost its majority but comfortably crossed the halfway mark with allies, the meeting of the party's MPs every session was expanded to include its allies. Before the last national elections, the PM used to address weekly meetings of the BJP parliamentary party during Parliament sessions.
