Eye on the U: Previewing the Miami Hurricanes' spring game

Miami Herald10-04-2025

The Miami Hurricanes' slate of 15 spring practices will come to an end on Saturday when the team holds its spring game at Cobb Stadium on UM's campus. The game is slated to run from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
It will be the first and only full live look at the team after the media was allowed to view limited portions of practices (generally individual drills and very little 11 on 11) over the past month.
There are certainly many facets to pay attention to, including the new-look defense under defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman and the potential emergence of key players (including the young wide receivers and an overhauled secondary to name two groups).
On the latest episode of Eye on the U, Miami Herald Hurricanes beat writer Jordan McPherson and deputy sports editor Andre C. Fernandez preview what's to come on Saturday and how it could set the stage for what Miami chooses to do afterward before the team reconvenes in late July to prepare for the 2025 season that starts Aug. 31 against Notre Dame.
McPherson and Fernandez also take a quick look at the state of the basketball team under first-year head coach Jai Lucas, who has already signed three transfers as he builds his first team almost completely from scratch.

Nation's No. 1 Recruit Had No Words for 5-Star Athlete's Miami Post

Nation's No. 1 Recruit Had No Words for 5-Star Athlete's Miami Post originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the Miami Hurricanes continue to push for the top players remaining in the 2026 recruiting class, they've started to ramp things up with official visits. Advertisement That includes athlete Lamar Brown. He went to Coral Gables on May 30, marking the second time the program hosted the Erwinville, Louisiana, product. Of course, as is a long-standing tradition with almost any visit, Brown tried on the Hurricanes' uniform, which he showcased with a social media post on Thursday, captioned "Take me back!!!" That caught the attention of Miami commit Jackson Cantwell (the No. 1 player in the nation per On3 Industry Rankings), who acknowledged the post by replying with three shrugging emojis. Of course, it's no surprise to see Cantwell trying to help the Hurricanes land Brown, as On3 Industry Rankings have him as a five-star prospect, the No. 1 athlete, the No. 1 player in Louisiana and the No. 7 player in the nation. Advertisement Throughout his high school career, he has been extremely impressive and in 2024 earned MaxPreps Junior All-America first-team honors at offensive line after not allowing a single sack all season. However, as impressive as that is, in an article from On3's Chad Simmons, Brown revealed that he plans on playing defensive line for whichever program earns his commitment. Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario CristobalSam Navarro-Imagn Images Now, it will remain to be seen if Cantwell's subtle recruiting tactics pay off, as the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine gives the LSU Tigers the best chance to land Brown at 96.9%, while Miami is listed at less than 1%. It's not as though these two are the only programs in play either, as Brown previously had an official visit with the Texas Longhorns on June 6 and has another scheduled with the Texas A&M Aggies on June 20. Miami, Mario Cristobal Land Recruiting Win Over In-State Rival On Tuesday

Miami, Mario Cristobal Land Recruiting Win Over In-State Rival On Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Miami Hurricanes are pushing for a top recruiting finish in the class of 2026 and landed another key win in that aspect on Tuesday. Advertisement Head coach Mario Cristobal and Co. sit ninth nationally in the 2026 cycle with a group headlined by the nation's No. 1 player in five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell. Previously holding 11 commitments, Miami added it's 12th pledge and the Hurricanes' sixth four-star recruit by landing four-star offensive lineman Canon Pickett. Pickett (6-foot-5, 290 pounds) is an in-state recruit out of Tampa Bay (Florida) Tech, where he ranks as the No. 13 player at his position and the No. 37 player in the state, per Rivals. Tampa Bay Tech offensive lineman Canon Pickett Jon Santucci/USA Today Florida Network / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The race came down to Miami, Florida and Clemson for Pickett, who visited the Tigers on May 30 before taking an official trip to the Hurricanes over the weekend. Advertisement Head coach Billy Napier and the in-state rival Gators are expected to get Pickett on campus for an official visit this weekend, but it was Miami that received his commitment before that trip. "I'm home!!!!!!!" Pickett wrote on X. Hurricanes faithful will always take a win over their in-state rival, whether its on the recruiting trail or on the field. Most notably, however, is Cristobal and position coach Alex Mirabal landing another top offensive lineman. Pickett joins Cantwell and four-star Joel Ervin in the class of 2026, a group that is shaping up to be one of the best in the country. It remains to be seen if Pickett will take his previously scheduled visit to Florida this weekend. Additionally, he is slated to be back at Miami on June 20 to round out his summer schedule. Historic College Football Program Builds Momentum With Two Recruiting Wins on Tuesday

Historic College Football Program Builds Momentum With Two Recruiting Wins on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Head coach Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes continue to surge on the recruiting trail after two significant additions to the 2026 class. Advertisement Following a 10-3 season, the best finish for the historic program since 2017, Cristobal and Co. have built some notable momentum within the high school ranks. Miami entered Tuesday with 11 commitments and the ninth ranked class nationally before landing a pair of four-stars in one day. Offensive lineman Canon Pickett kicked things off, committing to the Hurricanes as the No. 13 player at his position and the No. 37 player in the state of Florida (Tampa Bay Tech), per Rivals. Miami beat out in-state rival Florida for Pickett (6-foot-5, 290 pounds), who previously scheduled a visit to Florida for this weekend ahead of an official visit to the Hurricanes on June 20. Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal gestures after defeating the California Golden Yamashita-Imagn Images Less than three hours after Pickett's announcement, Miami received more good news, landing four-star defensive lineman Tyson Bacon over Florida, Georgia and Ohio State. Advertisement Bacon (6-foot-4, 260 pounds) was previously committed to Tennessee before backing off his pledge on April 23 and re-opening his recruitment. He visited Miami over the weekend and apparently liked what he learned. The Hoover (Alabama) High School product ranks as the No. 3 defensive lineman, the No. 5 player in the state and the No. 60 overall recruit. With Pickett and Bacon in the fold, the Hurricanes rose one spot to No. 8 nationally, including the nation's top recruit in five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell and eight four-star recruits. The momentum gained over the last couple of months certainly paints a promising picture for where Miami will stand from a talent perspective moving forward.
