OC Pom Rescue celebrates 5 years of going to the dogs
Karley List, has yet to 'foster fail,' a difficult feat considering the type of dog she fosters are the tiny, adorable Pomeranian breed.
Temporarily taking in a pet and accidentally falling in love with it is a common occurrence, but List's goal as a founding board member and director of marketing at OC Pom Rescue is to help each Pomeranian find its forever home.
'They just need your love,' said List.
Based in Huntington Beach, OC Pom Rescue focuses specifically on rescuing Pomeranians. List's mother, Jasmine List, founded the nonprofit in 2020, with the goal of making the adoption process enjoyable and accessible while educating pet owners on responsible dog ownership and the Pomeranian breed.
'In our first year, we adopted out 212 dogs,' said List. 'That doesn't even account for the hospice dogs we took in. There was such a great demand for resources and help taking care of dogs.'
List has her own pet Pomeranians, River and Lennon, who were fostered in other homes, and she has always been a fan of the breed. Named for the region of Northern Europe where they are thought to have originated, the toy dog breed has distinct characteristics and needs that List said the team at OC Pom Rescue specializes in.
'We know Poms so well and we are Pom owners,' List said. 'We know the specific type of ailments and problems that are found with Pomeranians. We know their personalities and we know how to train them.'
Pomeranians descend from the German Spitz and range in size from 3 to 7 pounds with fluffy fur and plumed tails. Historically, the breed was popular with royals, particularly Queen Victoria. Pomeranians are also more susceptible to ailments like tracheal collapse and seizures.
Armed with this knowledge, List said they are sure to monitor those sensitive areas as soon as they get a new rescue.
'You need to be sure to check out their lungs, their hearts and their tracheas because those are the most common areas where Pomeranians have issues,' said List.
Despite such challenges, Pomeranians are also known for their playful and affectionate personalities and are regarded for their intelligence. They are a popular choice for pet owners, but sometimes circumstances change and owners are no longer able to properly care for their pets. OC Pom Rescue takes in dogs that are suffering from neglect, abandonment and even abuse.
In the years since the organization began, it has handled two hoarding situations, including one in which 56 dogs were surrendered that the rescue team dubbed the road-trip pack.
'We spent over $50,000 on those dogs because every single one of them needed vaccines, microchips. They all needed dental work,' said List.
At one point she had 12 dogs in her home herself, but helping the pups find their forever home made it worth it.
'The most rewarding thing is now I have all these friends and family members that have these little dogs that I saw in the most vulnerable and challenging part of their life and now they are in the best part of their life.'
This Sunday, Feb. 2, OC Pom Rescue celebrates its five-year anniversary with a carnival-themed adoption and fundraising event at Golden Road Brewing in Anaheim. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. guests can enjoy face painting, pet portraits, raffle baskets and a food fair from Just Food for Dogs, a fresh dog food brand. There will also be plenty of adoptable Pomeranians.
'All of our beautiful Pomeranians will be there, and it is a chance for everyone to come meet our poms,' said List.
The event is designed to raise funds to help OC Pom Rescue continue its important work and as an outreach effort to the community.
'A big challenge for us on a day-to-day basis is having a regular foster group,' said List.
While the rescue has roughly 20 homes in its current network, sometimes foster families go on vacation or need a two-week break between fosters.
'Our need for fosters never falls,' said List.
Eventually, List said, OC Pom Rescue would like to operate a brick-and-mortar facility that would allow the organization to take in more dogs and better care for the ones they get. For now, she said the team will continue to advocate for the responsible ownership of poms.
'We are so passionate about what we do,' said List. 'We go above and beyond for our dogs.'

Nature enthusiast captures stunning image of short-eared owl in East Lancashire
A nature enthusiast and bird watcher has captured a short-eared owl in flight at the side of the roadside in East Lancashire. Images supplied to the Lancashire Telegraph Camera Club by ShutterV1sion show the elegant bird flying alongside their vehicle. Whilst not endangered, this sighting is becoming increasingly rare, with between 610 and 2,140 pairs left in the UK. This has meant they have been placed on the Amber-list of bird conservation concern. ShutterV1sion, who also captured images of Golden Plovers, said: 'Well, didn't expect to see a pair of Golden Plovers at the side of the road while driving to go for a walk. 'Pulled up the car and sat watching them for a few minutes as they just pottered around at the side of the road and then carried on down the road to find a short-eared owl flying by the side of the car. I'll certainly be going down that road again.' With luminous golden eyes and black eyeshadow, the bird is considered one of the most stunning owls in the UK. Short-eared owls have mottled brown bodies with pale underwings and yellow eyes. To spot one, they tend to be in moorland, dunes and heathland and mostly breed in northern England and Scotland. Whilst they mostly feed on small mammals, especially field voles, they are also known to eat small birds, particularly in winter. Sadly, the birds are routinely shot on driven grouse moors, and the RSPB has a dedicated investigations team to work to stop their persecution. Whilst they are mostly found in Orkney, the Uists and in the Pennines they are regular visitors to the lowlands of Lancashire.

Flying on Southwest or United? These new baggage and check-in rule changes come into effect soon
With Memorial Day behind us, America's summer travel season is now in full swing. While flyers should be aware of how to find great fares and the best apps to use when taking a vacation overseas, they should also be mindful of a few new rule changes going into effect at popular airlines, which could impact their trips. Those changes are happening at two of America's most well-known airlines—Southwest and United—and include alterations to the airlines' free baggage and check-in policies, respectively. Here's what to know about the changes and when they go into effect. Southwest's signature 'Bags Fly Free' policy changes on May 28 On Wednesday, May 28, Southwest's signature 'Bags Fly Free' policy is changing. The policy has been a defining feature of the airline for decades, which lets Southwest fliers check up to two bags for free on any flight. However, come May 28, that policy will end for many Southwest passengers. As Fast Company previously reported, many passengers who book flights on Southwest from May 28 will now need to pay for checked baggage, although some will still be able to check bags for free. Here's how the new checked baggage policies work, according to Southwest: If you are a Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Member or traveling on Business Select fares, you'll still be able to check up to two bags for free on your flight. If you are an A-List Member or a Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmember, you'll get one checked bag for free on each flight. But if you don't fall into the categories above, you'll now be charged to check your first and second bags on each flight. It's important to note that these new baggage-check rules and fees only apply to flights booked on or after May 28, 2025. If you booked your flight before that date, you'll still be able to take advantage of Southwest's old 'Bags Fly Free' policy even if the flight takes place after May 28. United's check-in policy changes on June 3 On June 3, anyone flying on United will need to check in for their flight at least 45 minutes before departure, the airline confirmed with Fast Company. Previously, some passengers could check in as little as 30 minutes before their flight. Those who do not check in at least 45 minutes before their flight is scheduled to depart will be denied boarding starting June 3. Historically, United has allowed those flying without checked bags to check in by as little as 30 minutes before a domestic flight. Those on domestic flights with checked bags had a 45-minute check-in cutoff. In order to simplify things for gate staff and provide uniformity for passengers, United will now require anyone on a domestic flight with or without checked bags to check in at least 45 minutes before departure. 'The change brings greater consistency for our customers by aligning with our current checked baggage deadline and the check-in policies followed by most other airlines,' a United spokesperson told Fast Company via email. It should be noted that the new 45-minute check-in rule only applies to domestic flights. For international flights, United requires passengers to check in at least 60 minutes before the scheduled departure. United's check-in time limits can be found here.

Small Plane Crashes Into Los Angeles-Area Neighborhood, Killing 2 People and a Dog
SIMI VALLEY, Calif.—A small plane crashed into a neighborhood in Simi Valley on Saturday afternoon, killing two people and a dog aboard the aircraft and damaging two homes, authorities said. Fire crews responded, and police cordoned off the streets, warning people to stay clear of the area. Smoke could be seen billowing from the roof of one home in the Wood Ranch section of the community, which lies nearly 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Wreckage could be seen between the two homes. The Ventura County Fire Department confirmed that residents were inside at the time but said they evacuated with no reported injuries. Both homes sustained structural damage and were impacted by the fire, authorities said. About 40 firefighters were on scene. With the flames out, they began working on salvage. Officials initially reported one death. Later Saturday, the Simi Valley Police Department said the pilot, a passenger and a dog in the airplane died. As of Sunday, authorities had not released any information about the occupants of the single-engine Van's RV-10, which is a popular home-built plane sold in kit form. Hovakemian told the Los Angeles Times that he was doing yard work when he noticed the plane above, circling lower and lower in the hillside neighborhood. He ran inside to get his wife, Armineh, and their Pomeranian dog, Koko, and they fled the property. A loud bang followed and the fuselage landed where he had been standing in the yard just moments before, he said. 'I'm numb. It hasn't sunk in yet,' Hovakemian said Saturday as dozens of firefighters and police officers surrounded his home. 'We're fortunate we were able to get out.' In security video recorded by a neighbor that was viewed by the Times, the plane can be heard circling the neighborhood for nearly three minutes and flying close to homes at points. In another video, the plane can be seen shooting straight up into the clouds then dropping down again. An investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board also was on the scene Saturday. NTSB spokesperson Peter Knudson said once the wreckage of the plane is documented, it will be moved to a secure facility for further evaluation. Investigators also will be combing through the plane's maintenance records, weather forecasts, recordings of any air traffic control communications, witness statements, the pilot's background and any surveillance video that might have captured the aircraft. In January another Van's RV-10 crashed into a warehouse in Fullerton, which is southeast of Los Angeles, while trying to make an emergency landing, killing the pilot and his teen daughter and injuring 19 people in the building. A preliminary report issued by the NTSB said that plane appeared to have had a door ajar during flight. It will likely be weeks before the NTSB releases preliminary findings on the Simi Valley crash. A final report comes months later.
