PCB responds to India Champions' boycott in WCL, bans the use of name 'Pakistan' in private leagues: Report
The Mohsin Naqvi-led Pakistan Cricket Board has insisted only they have the right to the term 'Pakistan', meaning teams outside their ambit cannot claim to represent the nation. AFP
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken strict action in the aftermath of the controversy that has engulfed the ongoing World Championship of Legends, reportedly banning the use of the name 'Pakistan' for teams in private leagues going forward.
The decision comes after the Yuvraj Singh-led India Champions team boycotted both of their matches against Pakistan Champions in the second edition of WCL in England, including their semi-final meeting that was scheduled to take place on Thursday.

According to Telecom Asia Sport, the PCB has objected to the name 'Pakistan Champions' as their match against 'India Champions' portrays the contest as an official game of cricket between India and Pakistan. The report adds that the decision was taken at a board meeting on Thursday, with senior PCB officials feeling India's boycott damaged Pakistan's image.
'The decision was taken after a detailed discussion in the Board of Directors meeting on Thursday.
'The high-level authorities felt Indian players refusing to play Pakistan in the WCL's second edition twice is hurtful to the name of the country,' sources were quoted as saying in the report.
PCB threatens legal action against private leagues
The Mohsin Naqvi-led board added that only they have exclusive right to the name 'Pakistan', and teams that do not fall within their ambit could not claim to represent the country.
'All private organisations will face legal action in case they use Pakistan's name. PCB has the sole right to allow its use for cricket events if it finds the authenticity of the League and the organisation as reputable,' added the source.
The ban however, does not cover the ongoing edition of the WCL, in which the Shoaib Malik-led Pakistan Champions are set to face AB de Villiers' South Africa Champions in the final.
While the Pakistanis had progressed to the final thanks to the Indian team's boycott, the Proteas defeating the Brett Lee-led Australia Champions by one run in the other semi-final to advance to the summit clash.

Speed demon Nihal turns to Prasanna, Gukesh's former coach, to become Classical ace
CHENNAI: Nihal Sarin is addicted to chess. One view at his profile on and it's fairly obvious. As of Saturday evening, he has played over 55,000 games on that platform alone. It also brings about his tendency to feature in speed chess (bullet or blitz). He's one of the best in the world in the quickest time controls but it can come in the way of his Classical preparation. It's kind of why Sarin, who became a GM a month after turning 14 in August 2018, approached Vishnu Prasanna at the back end of last year. Prasanna, one of several super coaches from this part of the country, considered Sarin's request before saying 'yes'. "We met at Global Chess League (GCL) last year," Prasanna, who worked with D Gukesh for a long time, said. "I have been working with him since March and we have had decent results. Right now, we are looking to see what we can do at the World Cup, Grand Swiss and generally get his ratings (in Classical) higher. That is my main goal." While Gukesh, 19, Arjun Erigaisi, 21, and R Praggnanandhaa, 19, have added more bows to their Classical quiver, it's perhaps fair to say that their compatriot has slightly fallen behind in the game's oldest format. The 21-year-old, whose Classical rating is 2692, is 'stagnating for a while', according to Prasanna. Considering ratings alone, it's easy to make that case. Most other Indian players have breached that 2700-mark, a milestone considered elite territory. 'I think he's very good at other formats," Prasanna said. "Like eSports and online chess. He doesn't really need my expertise there. He's already at the top. We came up with some ideas for the eSports World Cup and it worked well, especially in the qualification stage."

Neeraj Chopra, Arshad Nadeem's Highly-Awaited Face-Off Won't Happen In August. Reason Is...
Indian's World Champion and Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has withdrawn from Silesia Diamond League, scheduled for August 16, with Pakistan's reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem also being absence from the list for the meet to be held in Poland. The meet was expected to be the first clash between the Indian and Pakistani rivals since their Paris Olympics 2024 face-off, where Arshad outclassed Neeraj with a record-breaking throw that earned him a gold medal, while Neeraj had to stay content with silver, as per The high-profile clash, teased by event organisers back in July, was in doubt as Nadeem underwent a surgery in his right calf during last month. The Pakistani star was ruled out of the competition by his coach and does not appear in the list unveiled this week. On the other hand, the reason behind Neeraj's absence is unclear. The Indian superstar has enjoyed a spectacular start to the 2025 season. Chopra took the top honours in the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, a competition named after him at Sri Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium in Bengaluru last month. The reigning javelin throw champion stood triumphant with 86.18m. Neeraj kickstarted with a win at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April and followed it up with a very special second-place finish at Doha Diamond League, where he crossed the 90-metre mark for the first time ever, with a throw of 90.23 m. He also went on to secure a second spot in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland later that month and resumed his winning ways with back-to-back titles at Paris Diamond League and Ostrava Golden Spike this month, with best efforts of 88.16 m and 85.29 m. Most recently came his NC Classic triumph in front of his home crowd. Neeraj and Nadeem are both aiming to take part in World Athletics Championships scheduled for Tokyo from September 13-21. During the previous edition, Neeraj had finished ahead of Nadeem to win the gold, becoming the first-ever Indian to land a gold at the marquee event. Before the prestigious Tokyo meet, the Lausanne Diamond League on August 20 will be the last major athletics event where Neeraj could get some game time.
