LUMS hosts fourth annual Practicum Showcase Conference
LAHORE: The Syed Ahsan Ali and Syed Maratib Ali School of Education (SOE) at LUMS hosted its fourth annual Practicum Showcase Conference, featuring capstone projects by MPhil Education Leadership and Management students on April 28, 2025.
The showcased work reflected year-long collaborative efforts with partner organisations, addressing real-world challenges in the education sector. The conference brought together over 400 participants, including faculty members, MPhil students, senior LUMS administration, representatives from partner organisations, and education sector experts.
The one-day conference featured workshops and a gallery of student presentations across diverse fields such as pedagogy, inclusive education, leadership, educational technology, art education, community development, and early childhood education. There were multiple panel discussions that explored pressing challenges in the education sector and potential practical solutions.
Addressing an eager audience, keynote speaker Ms. Baela Raza Jamil, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi, shared, 'The colonial, factory-model school system wasn't built for the world we live in today. We need bold, local solutions that speak to our realities. Education must engage the mind, heart, and gut—through strong socio-emotional learning.
It's only through meaningful partnerships between citizens, governments, and institutions like LUMS that we can truly re-imagine education for the future.'
At the closing ceremony, Dr. Tayyaba Tamim, Dean of SOE, reflected on the significance of academic-practitioner collaboration and the broader goals of the conference, stating, 'We celebrate the culmination of the MPhil journey for our graduating students.
None of this would have been possible without the invaluable support of our partner organisations. This conference is a space to engage with issues that matter deeply to us. I urge you to keep one vital element at the center—teacher wellbeing. Let us humanise our systems, our policies, and our practices. Finally, we must continue to strengthen the bridges between schools and universities.'

FBR document submission process highlighted
LAHORE: In a recent awareness lecture on withholding tax at the Lahore Tax Bar, Member Inland Revenue Muhammad Mohsin Virk shed light on the process of filing and pursuing cases before the Appellate Tribunal. Virk emphasized the importance of following proper procedures when submitting documents to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). According to Virk, when documents go missing and cases are decided against taxpayers, they often argue for case restoration, claiming that the documents were submitted to the FBR. However, they fail to provide proof of submission in the form of a receipt. He clarified that the only way to ensure proof of document submission is by getting the documents recorded in the FBR's record. He stated, 'If documents are submitted without proper recording, it becomes the taxpayer's responsibility to prove submission.' Modest business activity on cotton market
LAHORE: The local cotton market on Saturday remained steady and the trading volume remained low. Cotton Analyst Naseem Usman told Business Recorder that the current cotton prices in Sindh and Punjab is in between Rs 16,500 and Rs 17,500 per maund, depending on quality and payment. He also told that 200 bales of Sanghar of new season of 2025-26 were sold at Rs 17,200 per maund and 200 bales of Hyderabad were sold at Rs 17,500 per maund. Kabul upgrades diplomatic mission in reciprocal move
ISLAMABAD: Welcoming the decision of the Government of Pakistan to upgrade the level of its diplomatic mission in Kabul to that of an ambassador, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has positively reciprocated by elevating the diplomatic status of its mission in Islamabad. 'In reciprocity, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will elevate the status of its mission in Islamabad from chargé d'affaires to ambassador,' said the statement issued by the Afghanistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday. This elevation in diplomatic representation between Afghanistan and Pakistan paves the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation in multiple domains, the statement highlighted. Pakistan elevates diplomatic ties with Afghanistan to ambassador level Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed in Beijing to elevate their diplomatic relations earlier this month to normalise strained ties fraught with militancy. Pakistan has been pressing Afghanistan to stop use of its soil for terrorism. Meanwhile, an Afghan foreign ministry official, Zalmay Jalali announced through his post on X that the current chargé d'affaires in Islamabad, Sardar Ahmad Shakeeb, will assume responsibilities as the country's ambassador to Pakistan.
