Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader placed on 15-day disabled list with shoulder strain

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left shoulder. The move, retroactive to Monday, comes after the left-hander reported shoulder discomfort before Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox. 'It's (a) punch in the gut,' manager Joe Espada said. 'But ... he's seeing doctors right now. We're getting more tests done and hopefully this is not going to be a long-term thing.' Espada added that they don't yet know the severity of the injury and should know more after additional testing. Espada said he would not name a closer to fill in while Hader is out, but would use his relievers based on matchups. 'I feel good about all those guys,' Espada said. Hader, who is in his second season in Houston, is 6-2 with a 2.05 ERA and is tied for third in the majors with 28 saves in 48 appearances this season. To take his spot on the roster, the AL West-leading Astros reinstated right-hander Shawn Dubin from the 15-day injured list. They also designated right-hander Hector Neris for assignment and recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land. ___

Auburn receives votes in first AP Poll of season

The Auburn Tigers may enter the 2025 season with higher expectations in-house, but the voters around the country, at least for the time being, don't see Hugh Freeze's squad as a top 25 contender. Auburn was unranked in the first AP Poll of the college football season, marking the fifth straight year the Tigers have failed to crack the top 25. Auburn was listed among the programs that received votes, but their 10 nods were well behind the likes of BYU (156), Utah (144), and opening opponent Baylor (132) in the race to receive a ranking. The Tigers were one of 24 teams to receive at least one vote in the initial poll. Hugh Freeze's team was also one of only two SEC programs (Missouri, 33) to receive votes without earning a spot in the top 25. 10 other programs in the conference were awarded a spot in the top 25, with Texas (1) leading the way in front of Georgia (5), Alabama (8), LSU (9), South Carolina (13), Florida (15), Oklahoma (18), Texas A&M (19), Ole Miss (21), and Tennessee (24). The 10 ranked SEC programs led the way among all conferences, with the BIG 10 (6) coming in a distant second. While Auburn surely is disappointed with their lack of a ranking in either the AP or Coaches Poll, the Tigers could find themselves in the top 25 with an opening night win on the road against Baylor followed by a pair of victories against Ball State and South Alabama at home. Denzel rips Jerry Jones, 'He ain't thinking about us, he's thinking about his pockets!

Despite being the most valuable and recognizable sports franchise in the world, the Dallas Cowboys aren't without their problems. At the heart of those issues is the organizations leadership under owner Jerry Jones. As a business owner, Jones is as successful as anyone in the sports world. His team prints money, but it's not what fans care about. That point was made abundantly clear when noted Cowboys fan Denzel Washington joined ESPN's First Take to be the latest person in line to hammer Jones on how he runs his team. Washington, on set with producer Spike Lee to promote his upcoming movie release Highest to Lowest, professed his love for the team. He speaks about being a Cowboys' fan since the 1960s. His frustration over the team's inability to win over the last three decades falls squarely on the shoulders of Jones. Washington's biggest line that "you (Jones) haven't been to the show, so you wouldn't know what it is to win" resonates extremely loudly for Cowboys fans. To most football observers, Jones is the foremost reason for the franchises failures since the turn of the century, something the Oscar winning actor appears to agree with. The contention that Jones chooses money over winning is something that gets closer to being reality every year. This is what 30 years without winning anything of note gets Jones and his Cowboys; being mocked and ridiculed by one of the world's most famous people. At some point the embarrassment has to set in. Which, in turn, will lead to changes in how the organization does business, right? Don't bet on it. If this offseason has taught us anything, its that Jones does not care about what people think, he's not changing, and he believes every time the Cowboys are brought up it brings attention and more importantly, dollars. While that might be Jones' agenda, it's a far cry from what the fans, including famous ones like Washington, are clamoring for. The money is nice for the Jones family, but its success on the field that matters to most to everyone else. For Dallas Cowboys fans big and small, winning a Super Bowl is what means something, not the money. Follow Cowboys Wire on Facebook to join in on the conversation with fellow fans!
