Auburn receives votes in first AP Poll of season
Auburn was listed among the programs that received votes, but their 10 nods were well behind the likes of BYU (156), Utah (144), and opening opponent Baylor (132) in the race to receive a ranking. The Tigers were one of 24 teams to receive at least one vote in the initial poll. Hugh Freeze's team was also one of only two SEC programs (Missouri, 33) to receive votes without earning a spot in the top 25.
10 other programs in the conference were awarded a spot in the top 25, with Texas (1) leading the way in front of Georgia (5), Alabama (8), LSU (9), South Carolina (13), Florida (15), Oklahoma (18), Texas A&M (19), Ole Miss (21), and Tennessee (24). The 10 ranked SEC programs led the way among all conferences, with the BIG 10 (6) coming in a distant second.
While Auburn surely is disappointed with their lack of a ranking in either the AP or Coaches Poll, the Tigers could find themselves in the top 25 with an opening night win on the road against Baylor followed by a pair of victories against Ball State and South Alabama at home.

Ohio State ranking in AP poll not as high as Coaches
Just a week after the US LBM preseason Coaches Poll was released, the Associated Press has followed suit. And while Ohio State was behind just one team in the Coaches Poll at No. 2, it appears below another team in the AP. The Texas Longhorns are the No. 1 team in both polls, but instead of OSU at No. 2, it slipped below Penn State to No. 3 in the AP Preseason poll. The Buckeyes did receive 11 first-place votes, but it wasn't quite enough to surpass the Nittany Lions. While Ohio State is the defending College Football Playoff national champion, there are a lot of question marks. OSU will be breaking in a new quarterback, will have to replace two 1,000-yard rushers in the backfield, and must find answers for multiple spots on the defense. Still, the thought is that there is enough talent to reload and absorb the 15 starters now off to the NFL, namely because OSU still has perhaps the two best players in college football with the return of safety Caleb Downs and superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith. But ... time will tell. Behind Ohio State and rounding out the top ten in the preseason AP Poll are Clemson (4), Georgia (5), Notre Dame (6), Oregon (7), Alabama (8), LSU (9), and Miami (FL) (10). Texas, Penn State, OSU, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon received at least one first-place vote. As always, preseason rankings mean very little, but it's still interesting to see where the media believes the pecking order is, with Ohio State still thought of very highly. OSU begins the defense of its national championship on Saturday, Aug. 30 vs. Texas in the 'Shoe. MSU basketball listed among top teams in Big Ten in latest preseason rankings
Today's edition of the ROTHSTEIN 45 is now LIVE following recent 10:1. Purdue2. Houston3. St. John's4. Florida5. Michigan6. UConn7. UCLA8. BYU9. Duke10. Texas TechCC: @FDSportsBook, @ Michigan State basketball remains just outside of the top 20 in the latest preseason rankings from one of the game's top analysts. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports has released an updated batch of preseason rankings for the 2025-26 college basketball season, and the Spartans remain listed just outside the top 20. Rothstein has the Spartans at No. 21 in his updated version of the rankings that were released on Tuesday. Among Big Ten teams, the Spartans rank No. 5 in Rothstein's list but there is a notable drop off after the top three. He has Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 5) and UCLA (No. 7) all in the top 10, and then next from the Big Ten is Oregon (No. 20) one spot before the Spartans. Michigan State is the reigning Big Ten champs and went the furthest of any team from the league in the NCAA Tournament by reaching the Elite Eight this past season. However, the Spartans have lost a number of key pieces off that highly-successful team, including leading scorers Jase Richardson and Jaden Akins -- so many like Rothstein anticipate a step back from the Spartans next season. As I've said during most of this offseason, I feel like anywhere from No. 15 to No. 25 is about right for the Spartans in next year's preseason poll. I would be quite surprised if they were any higher than No. 15 and shocked if they were unranked when the official preseason polls drop in a few months. Tigers' Wenceel Perez exits Saturday's game vs. Angels
Tigers' Wenceel Perez exits Saturday's game vs. Angels originally appeared on The Sporting News Detroit Tigers' starting outfielder Wenceel Perez was removed from Saturday's game vs. the Los Angeles Angels after the fourth inning, Evan Woodbery reported. Perez fouled a pitch off his right leg in the second frame before hitting a triple, but he looked 'like he was running a bit stiffly' when he singled in his next at-bat. Zach McKinstry entered the game at shortstop and Javier Baez moved to center field in the fifth. The Tigers would end up losing to the Angels, 7-4, at Comerica Park. The game was tied at 4-4 when Detroit removed Perez, who scored the Tigers' first run after Andy Ibanez's RBI single brought him home from third in the second inning. While Detroit has struggled over the past few weeks—seeing their 15-game lead in the AL Central shrink to six entering Saturday's game—Perez has excelled over his last ten games since July 29. During that span, he's hitting .424 (14-for-33) with six extra-base hits (two home runs) and three stolen bases. The Tigers need that type of production down the stretch with the Cleveland Guardians breathing down their necks. Perez has already spent time on the injured list this year due to lumbar spine inflammation and didn't make his season debut until May 27. Detroit will hope his injury this time around isn't nearly that serious. The 25-year-old signed with the Tigers as an international free agent in 2016 and made his Major League debut in 2024. Perez has drastically improved in several categories from his rookie year, hitting .267/.321/.492 with 9 homers and 25 RBI over 58 games in 2025.
