Former Oklahoma Sooners QB impressing in spring football

Yahoo18-04-2025

Former Oklahoma Sooners starting quarterback Jackson Arnold didn't have the career anyone expected he'd carve out in Norman. Now, he's trying to rebound at Auburn, and he's impressed his new head coach in the process.
After head coach Brent Venables hired Ben Arbuckle as the Sooners' new offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach this winter, Arnold entered the transfer portal, hoping to get his career back on track with the Tigers.

So far this spring, it seems that Arnold could be well on his way to doing so. His new head coach, Hugh Freeze, has been impressed with the junior quarterback's performance in spring ball. Freeze appeared on "The Paul Finebaum Show" and praised Arnold's play.
"He obviously has all the tools to be one of the top quarterbacks in the nation," Freeze said. "He's got the arm talent, he's got the legs, he's got the football IQ. I think he just needs confidence, and I think that confidence grew this spring, along with his rapport with our receivers."
Confidence, along with turnovers, was one of the biggest things that seemed to hold Arnold back in Norman. At times, it seemed the pressure of being the starting quarterback at a place like Oklahoma got to him. His performances in winnable games against Tennessee and Missouri left Sooner Nation wanting more out of the position.
Arnold, a former five-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, signed with OU out of Denton Guyer High School in Texas after winning the Elite 11 Finals and being named the Gatorade National Player of the Year for 2022. He sat behind Dillon Gabriel in 2023, before being handed the reins of the Sooners in 2024. He was expected to become the next great OU quarterback.

Instead, Arnold struggled mightily over just 10 career starts in crimson and cream, winning only five games. He was benched, re-inserted into the lineup, saw his offensive coordinator Seth Littrell get fired, and led Oklahoma to a dismal 6-7 record in Year 1 in the SEC. His team-leading passing yardage total was the lowest for an Oklahoma QB since 1998.
But perhaps a change of scenery will be just what Arnold needs. The split between he and the Sooners was in no way contentious, but maybe both sides will benefit. Arnold gets a new start at Auburn, where he still has the opportunity to prove himself in the country's toughest conference. Meanwhile, Oklahoma upgraded in a big way under center with John Mateer, who Sooner fans hope truly is the next great OU quarterback.

Steelers TE Pat Freiermuth's reaction to Aaron Rodgers signing revealed

Steelers TE Pat Freiermuth's reaction to Aaron Rodgers signing revealed Steelers TE Pat Freiermuth's initial reaction to the Aaron Rodgers signing has been revealed — and he's ready to chase a Super Bowl. ESPN's Brooke Pryor reported that Freiermuth was on a plane when the Rodgers signing news broke — and this is what the Steelers tight end told her: "I'm excited that Aaron [Rodgers] is a part of the locker room and we can focus on doing all the right steps to compete for a Super Bowl." It's comforting that the team still hasn't lost focus on what truly matters — bringing the seventh Lombardi to the Steel City — as the Rodgers waiting game did little to instill confidence in Pittsburgh's 2025 season. While the Rodgers-to-Freiermuth connection is one Steelers fans can excitedly look forward to, let's not forget Pittsburgh's WR1 DK Metcalf, who spent time catching passes from the four-time MVP during the infamous UCLA throwing session this offseason. Paraguayan Olympian Luana Alonso fires back at country's officials year after allegedly creating ‘inappropriate atmosphere' amid Olympic Village exit

Paraguayan Olympic swimmer Luana Alonso shot back at her country's claims she was kicked out of the Olympic Village last year for creating an inappropriate environment, slamming it as a lie and 'false rumors.' Alonso, 21, competed for her native Paraguay in the women's 100m Butterfly at the 2024 Summer Games, but failed to reach the semifinals. During her time in France, Alonso was accused of creating an 'inappropriate atmosphere,' forcing the Paraguayan Olympic Committee to remove her from the other athletes. She documented her trip to the theme park on social media, posing for a picture wearing Mickey Mouse ears and holding a champagne flute. 'Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay,' Larissa Schaerer, the head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, said in a statement published by The Sun at the time. 6 Alonso points at the Olympic Rings hanging on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, during the 2024 Olympics. 'The Paraguayan Olympic team claimed I created an 'inappropriate environment simply because I decided I didn't want to swim anymore,' she said. 'They tried to take my accreditation away, but that's not something they had the right to do. I chose not to hand it over and apparently that was 'inappropriate' to them.' Her dress style, which featured 'skinny clothing' and socializing with athletes, was also noted as a distraction during her stay at the Olympic Village in Seine-Saint-Denis. She made headlines before the start of the Paris Games when she debuted a new tattoo on her hips of the five Olympic rings. The Southern Methodist University alum claimed Paraguayan swimming officials had pleaded for her to return to the pool for the Pan American Junior Games being held in the country's capital, Asunción, in August. 'If I had been treated with basic respect, maybe I wouldn't have stepped away,' she added. Alonso says she always had 'given everything' for her country but when she stood up for herself it was viewed as a problem. The two-time Olympian threatened to sue news outlets who ran stories about the accusations brought against her by the Paraguayan Olympic Committee. Who came up with that nonsense? Well that it's not true,' she wrote. Alonso also teased that she would be releasing a video to better explain her thinking. 'Seriously this (sic) lies are wild and affecting my life and that's why I decided I'm keeping my life lowkey,' she said. Alonso retired from competitive swimming shortly after the Olympics concluded, but made a sudden about-face weeks later when she returned to training. Cowboys TE looking to bounce back from historically horrible to new $70 million contract

When Jake Ferguson was taken in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft, the expectations were clear. The Dallas Cowboys were looking to replace Dalton Schultz, who was entering a franchise tag season. The Cowboys clearly weren't interested in investing too heavily in Schultz, and after he turned down their offer the landscape had been agreed upon. Ferguson joined the club and initially appeared ready to reward the Cowboys for their vision at the position. By his second season he had emerged as a Pro Bowler and favorite target of quarterback Dak Prescott. However things fell apart in Years 3, and Ferguson was unable to handle the role of Cowboys' No. 2 weapon as there was no viable threat on the outside opposite CeeDee Lamb. The increased defensive scrutiny led Ferguson to turn in the worst statistical season in NFL history. Now, he'll look to not only bounce back in 2025, but prove last year was the fluke, not his 2023 campaign. Position: Tight End Age: 26 Height: 6-foot-5 Weight: 244 pounds Hometown: Madison, WI High School: Phillips Memorial (WI) College: Wisconsin (Highlight Video) Draft: 2022 Fourth round Contract: Four-year deal (2022), $4.4 million 2025 Base Salary: $3.4 million Career Earnings: $3.3 million (per Over The Cap) Ferguson should have a lot less attention paid to him now that George Pickens is on the roster. Part of the reason he slumped so badly was because defenses could apply bracket coverage and he's not athletically capable of beating double teams. He is capable however of beating single coverage. As far as roster competition, the Cowboys followed up his rookie campaign by drafting Luke Schoonmaker out of Michigan in the 2023 second round. He hasn't developed into a starter after two years, but did show some signs of life, so there will be an opportunity given to him to emerge as TE1. Ferguson will also have a ton of UDFA competition (Brevyn Spann-Ford, Princeton Fant, John Stephens, Rivaldo Fairweather, Tyler Neville) behind him; none of them look ready for a huge role but this is before training camp. If Ferguson emerges with the role, he has a chance to earn a new contract, whether still in Dallas or elsewhere. The market was most recently set by Trey McBride. The two had relatively similar stats through their first two years, but went in totally different directions in Year 3. Ferguson went from 90 catches for 930 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons to just 59 catches for 494 yards and no scores in Year 3. McBride went from 110 catches for 1090 yards in two seasons and then exploded in Year 3 for 111 receptions for 1,146 yards in 2024. The Cardinals rewarded him with a four-year, $76 million extension. Ferguson can only hope to achieve such a lofty contract, but before even thinking about avoiding the franchise tag fate that befell Schultz, he'll have to fight off the competition.
