UP cabinet meeting: Amendment to KGMU Act for SC/ST, OBC representation in exec council
The cabinet also approved the draft bill to be tabled at the upcoming monsoon session of the legislative assembly. According to the amendment in Section-24 I(A), 'One member from amongst the senior most professors of the University belonging to the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes and one member from amongst the senior most professors of the University belonging to other backward classes, to be nominated by the State Government, on rotation basis, in consultation with the Vice-Chancellor.'
The King George's Medical University Act-2002 provides for the protection and monitoring of the constitutional rights of the reserved categories in KGMU. KGMU was established as a centre of excellence in the field of medical education. The university has contributed significantly not only in state but also in the country in the field of medical education and tertiary care, said a press statement issued after the cabinet meeting.
Teachers' reaction
Earlier four faculty members -- two from the medical and two from the dental wing -- were part of the executive council from the SC and OBC categories. They were part of the executive council for about 14 years. 'Now, we have four faculty, including those from medicine, dental, paramedical and nursing (wings). The executive council can have eight members from SCs and OBCs,' said teachers, reacting to the cabinet decision.

Dalit forum condemns attack on YouTubers
Mangaluru: The Karnataka Dalit Horata Samiti condemned the attack on YouTubers and a reporter from a private Kannada news channel in Dharmasthala recently. Samiti district leader SP Anand told reporters on Saturday, that while the Dakshina Kannada police arrested one person in connection with the incident, around 50-60 individuals were involved in the attack. "All those responsible must be arrested and booked under stringent laws," he demanded. Anand pointed out that one of the injured, cameraman Abhishek, belongs to the Dalit community. "The FIR should also include provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, along with sections related to robbery," he said. The Samiti plans to petition the DK superintendent of police and home minister on the matter. According to Anand, the miscreants alleged that false propaganda was being spread on social media about Dharmasthala's sacred place. "We too respect Dharmasthala and are not against it. We only want the police to identify those who orchestrated the attacks," he said. He welcomed the Special Investigation Team's probe into the alleged mass burial case in Dharmasthala and urged it to bring out the truth. "It is an attack on the democratic process, which is aimed at uncovering the truth," he said. Samiti leader Anil Kumar alleged that the assault was a deliberate conspiracy to suppress facts. EC delists 5 parties in state
1 2 Ranchi: The Election Commission (EC) has removed five registered unrecognised political parties (RUPP) from its list in Jharkhand after they failed to meet the regulation provided under the Representation of People (RP) Act, 1951. The office of Jharkhand chief electoral officer (CEO) K Ravi Kumar on Saturday said Bharat Vikas Morcha of Deoghar, Bhartiya Janmukti Party and Manav Mukti Party of Palamu, Navjawan Sangharsh Morcha of Garwah and Rashtriya Mazdoor Kisan Prajatantrik Party of Ranchi were removed from the list. "If a registered party does not fight elections for six years then it would be removed from the EC list. Besides, political parties have to inform the EC about the changes in their name, address and office bearers without delay to the EC, under the RP Act," the CEO's office said in a statement. The EC, had in June sent a list of 345 RUPPs, including seven of Jharkhand, to CEOs across the country for compliance of rules. Jharkhand CEO issued show cause notices to the RUPPs and provided them opportunity to present their argument. Out of seven RUPPs of Jharkhand, Jansadharan Party and the Jharkhand Vikas Dal presented their sides before the CEO. Based on the recommendation of the CEOs, the EC has removed 334 RUPPs from the list. These political parties cannot take benefits of the Income Tax Act and the election symbols (reservation and allotment) order under the RP Act. NCP (SP) kickstarts Mandal Yatra in Nagpur
Ahead of the upcoming local body polls, the Nationalist Congress Party (SP) on Saturday launched 'Mandal Yatra' from Nagpur, recalling it was former Chief Minister and current party chief Sharad Pawar who implemented Mandal commission in the state extending reservation benefits to OBCs. 'The yatra will be taken across the state. It will address issues faced by OBCs, hold public rallies and focus on strengthening organisation of OBCs. Our aim is to create public opinion against the government over the issues such as condition of Maharashtra's farmers, the issue of suicide, economic troubles faced by banks,' said Pawar. The yatra will travel across all the districts of the state over the next two months. According to sources, one of the reasons cited by the party for its loss in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections was OBCs deserting the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. The yatra is also seen as the party's bid to regain lost base. When asked whether the party was specifically targeting OBC community, NCP (SP) state chief Shashikant Shinde said, 'Our party is not limited to a particular caste or community. We work for all and address concerns raised by every community. The yatra is an attempt to address issues of OBCs and the party will keep on raising issues concerning every citizen of Maharashtra,' said Shinde. NCP (SP) ally's Congress too is currently attempting to focus on the OBC leadership. In its recently announced state executive committee, the party gave preference to OBC leadership. Not only the opposition, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too attended a programme organised by OBC Mahasangh at Goa. 'I was targeted for speaking up for OBCs. Irrespective of how much I am targeted, I will keep speaking for the OBCs,' Fadnavis had said.
