Former Australian cricketer and current Punjab Kings (PBKS) assistant coach Brad Haddin has come out in strong support of Shreyas Iyer , saying that he should be seriously considered as a future captain of the Indian cricket team. The BCCI named Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Test side after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired last month.
Iyer, who has impressed everyone with his batting and captaincy over the past few months, was snubbed from the Test team despite reports suggesting that he might be picked to play in the No. 4 position, which has been left vacant by Kohli. However, when the Indian team for the England series was announced, Iyer's name was missing.

PBKS coach urges BCCI to make Iyer the captain
PBKS assistant coach Brad Haddin, who has watched Iyer from close quarters, has praised his leadership during the recently concluded IPL 2025 season. Punjab Kings finished at the top of the points table to make the playoffs. They qualified for the final thanks to a brilliant knock from Iyer against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2. However, PBKS eventually lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the summit clash.
Speaking on The Grade Cricketer podcast, Haddin recalled a moment in Ahmedabad where Iyer made a bold decision that went against all the data and analysis. He mentioned the match against Mumbai Indians that PBKS won thanks to Iyer's composed innings. PBKS qualified for the IPL final after 11 years and Iyer played a big role in it.
'You do all your planning for the game and at the stadium in Ahmedabad, everything says bat first. The analytics and the match-ups, go through your team stuff, everything says bat first. And this is where our captain hasn't got enough credit and I hope, when they come down to pick an Indian captain, they really start to consider Iyer. He was outstanding throughout the whole tournament,' Haddin said.
'We say to him, 'Yep, we are batting first.' But he goes, 'No, we're bowling.' Punter goes, 'okay let the captain make the choice.' [Iyer] then said, 'No, I'll win the game and I'm going to bat second. Everything leads to batting first, but we bowl. Then the captain comes out in the second innings and plays one of the best knocks in IPL I have ever seen and got us into the final,' he added.
Iyer broke a lot of captaincy records at the Punjab Kings. He became the first captain to lead three different teams to the IPL final. Iyer is also the first captain to lead two different teams to back-to-back finals. He helped Kolkata Knight Riders win the IPL last year. Before that, Iyer took Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final.

WTC Final: Pat Cummins claims fifer against South Africa, surpasses Indian great on elite list

NEW DELHI: Australia skipper delivered a breathtaking bowling performance at Lord's, grabbing 6 for 28 to rip through South Africa's batting order and tilt the World Test Championship final heavily in his side's favour. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Cummins's masterclass saw him register his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests and reach a major personal milestone, surpassing Indian great Bishan Singh Bedi and matching with nine five-fors as a Test captain, the second-most in history behind Imran Khan (12). Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Most Test 5-fers as captain 12 - Imran Khan 9 - Richie Benaud 9 - Pat Cummins 8 - Bishan Singh Bedi 7 - Courtney Walsh 7 - Jason Holder The South African innings collapsed spectacularly on Day 2, skittled out for just 138 in reply to Australia's modest 212. Cummins, who had already taken two wickets in the morning session, returned after lunch to produce a blistering burst, four wickets for one run in just 17 balls, leaving South Africa reeling. Temba Bavuma and David Bedingham had briefly steadied the ship with a 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Bavuma, who started the day on 3 not out, showed some fight with a stylish six off Cummins and a lofted drive off Starc, but was dismissed soon after, caught at cover by a diving Marnus Labuschagne. Poll Should Pat Cummins be considered among the greatest Test captains of all time? Yes, absolutely! Not yet, needs more time No, there are better captains Cummins struck again quickly after lunch, removing Kyle Verreynne lbw and trapping Marco Jansen for a duck in the same over. He then ended Bedingham's 111-ball effort by inducing an edge to the keeper before the lower order completely disintegrated. 'Cricketers Aren't Cattle... ': Harish Thawani on the IPL and Business of Indian Cricket A farcical run-out of Keshav Maharaj only added to South Africa's woes, and Cummins fittingly wrapped up the innings with his 300th Test wicket, dismissing , caught at deep square leg by Beau Webster. With this performance, Cummins not only reaffirmed his status as one of the premier fast bowlers of his generation but also etched his name alongside the game's greats as a captain who leads by fiery example.

Gautam Gambhir pushes for Australia tour-like prep, demands secretive intra-squad match before England Tests

India will play just one practice game before the start of the five-match contest against England, much like they had prepared for the tour of Australia. And head coach Gautam Gambhir has demanded secrecy, just like they had in Perth last November. However, unlike the previous overseas tour, it won't be a mere match simulation but a full-fledged four-day intra-squad warm-up game against India A, in Beckenham, Kent, starting Friday. India did schedule a similar before the tour of Australia, but the match was shelved at the last minute as the management opted for match simulation to gear up for the series. Moreover, the officials at the WACA, where the Indian team were stationed before the start of the series in Perth, were given strict instructions by the BCCI that the practice game would be played behind closed doors, implying fans would not be able to watch it. In fact, India's entire training at the old Perth venue was under wraps in a bid to not give away any secrets to the opposition. Gambhir has pushed for the same this time. In a report in the PTI, the former India batter has called for a "closed-door" intra-squad game, "to prevent the opposition from getting any ideas on the tactical front, emulating a long-established practice among European football clubs." The 360-overs of match practice will not only give the team management a chance to allow the bowling unit to get enough overs under their belt, it will also hint towards the possible batting line-up, around which there has been considerable debate following the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Focus will also be on Jasprit Bumrah, who will play a red-ball game after six months. He will also get a chance to bowl multiple spells and test his fitness, having only played IPL since his comeback from a lower back stress injury.
