WWE Crew Stuck At Airport Ahead Of WWE Night Of Champions Due To Airspace Shutdowns

Yahoo23-06-2025
Airspace shutdowns have already had a small effect on WWE Night Of Champions weekend in Saudi Arabia.
The United States recently carried out what is being called a 'successful' attack against three of Iran's nuclear facilities. In response, Missiles were fired at a US Airbase in Qatar, which borders Saudi Arabia. Iran's actions have resulted in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates closing their respective airspaces. This could also have a potential effect on WWE's events this week. In fact, it has already resulted in several WWE production employees being stranded at the airport.

SmackDown and Night of Champions are both set to take place this weekend in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. According to F4WOnline.com's Bryan Alvarez, 'Many WWE production employees who flew in early for this Saturday's Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia are now stuck at the Qatar airport.'
In addition, @WrestleVotes claims a source who is scheduled to be part of Night Of Champions said they hope WWE considers rescheduling the event.
Will WWE Night of Champions still take place?
WWE is advertising a SmackDown taping in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Friday, June 27. Night Of Champions is still scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 28. The company has not publicly commented on the situation. Despite that, a source told Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp that they are actively monitoring the situation. WWE talent is expected to leave on a chartered flight for Riyadh in the middle of this week.

In addition, a source also claims the promotion postponing or canceling the event would be a costly financial decision, as there is too much money at stake in regard to the 2026 Royal Rumble. It was stressed that this source was sharing an opinion, not fact. As of Sunday, the team in Saudi Arabia was preparing as if the event will still happen.
As far as whether the event will actually take place, many fans expressed hope that WWE considers postponing it. However, WWE talent scheduled to go to Saudi Arabia 'had not been updated on any changes' as of this afternoon, according to Fightful.
WrestleZone will continue to provide any new information regarding WWE's events in Saudi Arabia this weekend as it becomes available.

WWE Comes Early to ESPN With ‘Wrestlepalooza' Special Event on September 20

ESPN is going to the mat for a special WWE event much sooner than expected. The Disney sports-media giant will host 'Wrestlepalooza,,' a new live event on the professional-wrestling giant's calendar, on September 20. The two entities had been expected to kick off a new five-year deal that had ESPN getting the rights to all of WWE's live spectaculars in 2026. ESPN will also show WWE's 'Crown Jewel' on October 11, and 'Survivor Series' on November 29. More from Variety ESPN Streaming Launch Gives 'Sports Center' a Makeover. The event will John Cena, Cody Rhodes, World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, WWE Women's Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch, CM Punk and Drew McIntyre in major matches. 'On September 20, WWE and ESPN are coming together for a can't-miss event to kick off our new partnership,' said WWE Chief Content Officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, in a prepared statement. 'The biggest Superstars in WWE. The biggest brand in sports media. Are you ready?' NBCUniversal's Peacock previously had rights to show WWE's series of live specials, which have also included 'Wrestlemania.' The addition of the WWE events helps ESPN keep its connection with TKO, the sports-management company that also operates the UFC mixed-martial-arts league, in addition to the wrestling entertainment company. ESPN's hold on UFC matches will lapse at the end of the year, and TKO has committed to putting all its UFC events on Paramount Skydance's Paramount+ as part of a new $7.7 billion deal valued at around $1.1 billion per year. The WWE pact also gives ESPN another way to promote its new streaming service, which launches Thursday. The new ESPN service will, for the first time, make all of ESPN's offerings available to broadband subscribers, rather than a sub-section of content. As part of the launch, ESPN has unveiled a number of new content agreements as well as interactive features. Best of Variety 'Harry Potter' TV Show Cast Guide: Who's Who in Hogwarts? John Cena's final match confirmed for Saturday Night's Main Event in December

We now know when the time is up. John Cena will have his final WWE match at Saturday Night's Main Event on Dec. 13, NBC Sports announced on Wednesday, Aug. 20. It was not announced where Cena's final match will take place, but it is expected to take place in or around Boston, which is in the same state as his hometown of West Newbury, Massachusetts. His opponent is also yet to be determined. The news of Cena's final match came the same day as a major reshuffling happened in WWE events. The wrestling company announced its premium live events will begin airing on ESPN platforms in September, starting with Wrestlepalooza on Sept. 20. The partnership begins three months earlier than the initial start of 2026. WWE's premier live events have aired on Peacock and its final one will be Clash in Paris on Aug. 31. However, WWE and Peacock announced a multi-year deal where Saturday Night's Main Event will move from NBC to Peacock. With the move to the streaming service, it would allow the show to possibly limit the number of commercials during the broadcast, as well as not being limited to a hard end time, an issue that resulted in Goldberg's farewell speech being cut off. John Cena farewell tour: How many appearances does he have left? Cena is currently nearing the end of his WWE career as 2025 will be his final year in the ring. Before the year began, the future WWE Hall of Famer said he would make 36 appearances during the farewell tour. As of Aug. 20, he has made 25, so 11 remain in the final three-plus months of the record 17-time champion's career. Of those 11 appearances, nine are confirmed. His retirement match and his appearance at the newly unveiled Wrestlepalooza on Sept. 20 were announced the same day. Here are the dates left in John Cena's WWE career:
