‘Stop abusing animals': Cat nabbed smuggling drugs into Costa Rica prison, video goes viral

Indian Express20-05-2025
Prison guards at the Pococí Penitentiary in Costa Rica recently nabbed an unusual smuggler: a black-and-white cat with drugs taped to its body. The bizarre incident has drawn widespread attention.
According to a Facebook post by Costa Rica's Ministry of Justice, guards noticed the cat behaving oddly as it moved near the prison's barbed wire fence. When they captured the animal, they discovered two tightly wrapped packages with marijuana, heroin, and rolling papers.
The drugs were confiscated, and the feline, nicknamed 'Narcomichi' by social media users, was handed over to the National Animal Health Service for a check-up to ensure it wasn't harmed, the BBC reported.
'On the night of Tuesday, agents from the Prison Police at Pococí Prison managed to rescue a kitten that had two drug packages taped to its body. An officer stationed in one of the watchtowers spotted the animal in a grassy area and immediately raised the alarm,' the Costa Rica's Ministry of Justice wrote on Facebook.
'Thanks to the swift actions of the responding officers, the cat was captured and the packages were removed, preventing them from reaching their intended destination. Upon inspection of the packages, one was found to contain 235.65 grams of suspected marijuana, while the other held 67.76 grams of suspected crack paste, along with two sheets of rolling paper,' it added.
The prison police have seized the drugs for a legal process, and coordinated with SENASA (National Animal Health Service) to ensure the cat received proper care.
The ministry commended the quick action of the guards, noting that their vigilance 'prevented these substances from reaching the prison population.' Officials have now launched an investigation to trace the criminal network behind the operation, suggesting that the smuggling attempt was likely part of a larger, coordinated effort.

Several social media users reacted to the incident, demanding that the cat be protected. 'What happened to the cat! Free the cat!' a user wrote. 'This is so sad. Stop abusing animals,' another user commented.
'Please make sure he is taken cared of that's abuse,' a third user reacted. 'We got cats smuggling before gta 6. Never forget,' a fourth user commented.
Authorities believe the cat was deliberately trained or manipulated to serve as a courier, possibly released near the prison by someone involved in the trafficking ring.
According to a report in The Tico Times, Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles unveiled plans days ago to build a new maximum-security prison modelled after El Salvador's controversial CECOT facility, part of his broader tough-on-crime strategy.

Kerala: Three officials suspended over lapses in road maintenance

Malappuram (Kerala), Aug 20, (PTI) Three PWD officials, including an executive engineer, have been suspended for serious lapses in road maintenance in Malappuram, PWD Minister P A Muhammad Riyas said on Wednesday. Riyas announced the suspension of the officials through a Facebook post. The suspended officials are the Executive Engineer of the Manjeri division, the Assistant Executive Engineer of the Perinthalmanna subdivision, and the Assistant Engineer of the Perinthalmanna section. According to Riyas, following complaints from the public, the Chief Engineer of the Roads Wing was directed to conduct an inquiry. The suspension was initiated on the basis of the Chief Engineer's report. Riyas said that despite receiving multiple complaints from the public, the officials failed to take any action to carry out maintenance work. The minister has also directed the PWD Vigilance Wing to initiate a probe against the suspended officials. Riyas explained that the government had introduced the Running Contract Scheme to ensure timely road maintenance across Kerala. 'However, during inspections this year, gross negligence in carrying out the works was noticed in certain areas. In Malappuram, even after funds were allocated, the technical sanction and tendering process were not initiated on time. The lapse was identified in the Perinthalmanna subdivision under the Manjeri division of the PWD Roads Wing," Riyas said. The minister reiterated that road maintenance works would continue without compromise, with public participation playing a crucial role in the process. He added that under the Running Contract Scheme, blue boards had been installed on roads with the phone numbers of the concerned officials displayed for the public to lodge complaints. If no action is taken after a complaint is raised, the matter can be escalated, he said. PTI TBA TGB KH view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Haryana teacher's death: Mobile internet suspended in Bhiwani, Charkhi for 48 hours

Chandigarh: Amid widespread public outrage over the death of a 19-year-old teacher, the Haryana government on Tuesday ordered the suspension of mobile internet, and bulk SMS and dongle services, while allowing voice calls, in Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri districts for 48 hours. Manisha's body was found in a field in Bhiwani on August 13. She had been missing since August 11, after leaving school, purportedly to inquire about admission at a nursing college. The death caused massive outrage, with people blocking key roads in the district and the opposition parties, including the Congress, demanding a CBI probe. Although the order does not make a reference to the teacher's death, sources said it has been issued in the wake of developments pertaining to the case. Issued by Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Sumita Misra, the order said that internet suspension will be in force from 11 am on August 19 till 11 am on August 21. 'It has been brought to my notice by ADGP/CID, Haryana and Deputy Commissioner, Bhiwani & Charkhi Dadri vide their requests dated August 19 that there is an apprehension of causing tension, annoyance, agitation, damage to public & private property and disturbance of public peace & tranquillity in the district Bhiwani & Charkhi Dadri... This order is issued to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order,' it said. The order further stated that the internet could be misused to spread inflammatory material and false rumours through social media or messaging services to disrupt peace and damage public assets. 'In order to stop the spread of misinformation and rumours through various social media platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter on mobile phones and SMS for facilitation and mobilisation of mobs of agitators and demonstrators who can cause serious loss of life and damage to public and private properties by indulging in arson or vandalism and other types of violent activities,' it said. Meanwhile, the emergence of a 'suicide note' in the death case on Monday turned the investigation on its head. Bhiwani Superintendent of Police Sumit Kumar had said the note was found near Manisha's body in a bag, which also had her Aadhaar card and other documents. He also said that there was proof of Manisha buying insecticide. 'In the viscera sample, the presence of insecticide has been confirmed in the body. So, there is self-purchase, there is a suicide note, there is poison in the body,' he said. The playschool teacher's family members, however, have insisted that she was murdered. The opposition parties have also flayed the BJP-led state government, claiming that the alleged murder was proof of a breakdown of law and order under the saffron party.

Local media, however, reported that a blanket was found at the scene carrying a message addressed to rival gangs and apparently signed by a group calling itself 'La Barredora', reported BBC.
