The Most Important Packers: No. 16 — Evan Williams
The Green Bay Packers went 11-6 last season, sweeping the NFC West and the AFC South along the way.
Overall, though, no one in the building was happy.
The Packers failed to build on their terrific finish to the 2023 campaign, settled for the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoffs, and lost a Wild Card game to eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia.
Afterwards, general manager Brian Gutekunst turned up the heat on everybody in the building.
'We need to continue to ramp up our sense of urgency,' Gutekunst said. 'I think it's time we started competing for championships.'
Those are fair expectations.
The Packers return 20 of 22 starters, and appear to have upgraded the roster via free agency and the draft. With several third and fourth year players trending upward, Green Bay should be poised to make a move.
'I think they're ready,' Gutekunst said.
Now, it's time for the Packers to prove their G.M. right.
Green Bay's first training camp practice is July 23. Between now and then I will count down the '30 Most Important Packers' heading into the 2025 campaign.
At No. 16 is safety Evan Williams.No. 16
Evan Williams, S
Last season
Williams was named to the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA) All-Rookie team after an impressive first season.
Williams made six starts and played in 13 games as a rookie. He had an interception, forced a fumble, had three passes defensed and 47 tackles.
Williams didn't play a single snap in the Packers' Week 1 loss to Philadelphia in Brazil, and he played just 34 snaps from scrimmage in Green Bay's first four games. But he moved into the starting lineup in Week 5 and made six starts overall.
What slowed Williams were hamstring and quadriceps injuries, as well as a late-season concussion. In all, Williams missed four games and couldn't finish two others.
'He's got to continue to learn his body,' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said of Williams. 'Because I know we had, there were some injuries last year just to make sure that he's available.'Career to date
Williams played four seasons at Fresno State before transferring to Oregon in 2023.
During his five college seasons, Williams recorded 307 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 5½ sacks, four quarterback hurries, four interceptions, 16 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
Overall, Williams earned some type of all-conference honors each of his final four college seasons.Outlook
Williams passed fellow rookie Javon Bullard and earned a starting safety job next to Xavier McKinney after a month last season. If Williams can stay healthy, he should keep that position — and could become one of the NFL's top young safeties.
Williams posted a 71.9 grade from Pro Football Focus in his first six games of 2024. In his final seven games, though — when injuries hit — Williams had an average grade of 58.3.
Williams has the intelligence and athleticism to develop into a high level safety. The key will be staying on the field. They Said It …
'He can be as good as he wants to be. I think he has a weapon in his brain with how smart he is and how aware he is. That accelerates your ability to play early in this league because you can grasp the concepts and what we're trying to get done.' — Packers defensive backs coach Ryan Downard on Williams'I feel like I'm a guy that learns through experience, learns through being in the fire more than just sitting back and watching. I feel like each rep, each step I'm taking this year, I'm just gaining confidence, gaining experience. Honestly I'm just looking to take that step being a confident football player out there and hopefully I'll have the defense just playbook in my back pocket so I can take that next step and think about other things; think about ok what is the offense trying to do here? What is this formation telling me? I feel like I could take steps in that department and taking it a step further and becoming a more proactive player rather than just being reactive.' — Williams on having a year of experience'I think just building on what he's already done and being consistent with it again. Another guy that loves the game. He's extremely intelligent. He comes in with the right mentality. And he just works.' — Packers coach Matt LaFleur on what Williams must do to improveTHE TOP 30

Paddy Pimblett appreciates Khamzat Chimaev showing 'levels of the game' in UFC 319 win
Paddy Pimblett disagrees with the fans who booed Khamzat Chimaev's UFC 319 performance. Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) landed 12 takedowns and had over 21 minutes of control time in a lopsided decision win over Dricus Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) to claim the middleweight title in Saturday's main event at United Center in Chicago. As Pimblett watched Chimaev hold down Du Plessis round after round, he couldn't help but praise the challenger's dominance. "For the casuals, this isn't going to be a fun fight to watch, but for people who actually do MMA and old school opinions, they'll appreciate this," Pimblett said on his YouTube channel. "I appreciate it because this is levels of the game, and Khamzat's grappling level is very high. His wrestling and MMA wrestling is brilliant. "I don't know if I've ever seen a fight like this, like champion, such a one-sided beatdown because Chimaev nearly won every second of this fight. Joe Rogan is right: Khamzat looks fresh. Everyone questioned his cardio going into this fight, and he looks sound. ...The crowd is booing. It's not Khamzat's fault that Dricus can't stop him doing this." As he wrapped up his breakdown, Pimblett didn't waste the opportunity to take a shot at fellow lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan. "Arman doing his best to get as much screen time as he can while his mate wins the belt," Pimblett said. "Closest that tool comes to touching it." Red Sox calling up outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, nicknamed 'The Password,' team's No. 3 prospect
The Boston Red Sox have called up their No. 3 prospect, outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, the team announced on Thursday. Garcia joins the Red Sox as they begin a four-game series with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Nicknamed "The Password" because of that difficult-to-spell first name, Garcia began the season in Double-A before being promoted to Triple-A Worcester. Overall, he batted .289/.363/.512 with 17 doubles, 20 home runs and 73 RBI in 433 total plate appearances. (With Worcester, he had a .303/.367/.564 slash average with 12 doubles, 17 homers and 56 RBI.) This story will be updated with more information.

After being released by Mets, right-hander Paul Blackburn signs with Yankees
NEW YORK (AP) — A week after his final appearance with the New York Mets, Paul Blackburn signed with the Yankees on Thursday to provide bullpen depth for the AL wild-card leaders. Blackburn was originally supposed to be with the Yankees for Wednesday's game against the Rays at Steinbrenner Field, but encountered extensive flight delays in Texas after flying in from Idaho and did not arrive in New York until early Thursday afternoon after rebooking flights. 'Yesterday I spent pretty much all day in the airport with delays and cancellations and everything,' Blackburn said before the Yankees opened a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Blackburn was 0-3 with a 6.85 ERA with the Mets this season. The right-hander last pitched the final five innings of an 11-6 loss to Atlanta on Aug. 13 when he allowed two runs. 'Some depth, some length,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'Our pen right now is not filled with a lot of guys that give us a lot of length, so obviously a track record of success in the big leagues." The 31-year-old Blackburn was originally designated for assignment by the Mets on Saturday to make room for prospect Nolan McLean. The Mets announced he was released on Tuesday after declining an outright assignment to the minors and clearing waivers on Monday. 'It was tough but I think it's a good place to start over,' Blackburn said. 'Just kind of contribute anyway I can here for the rest of this year and go from there.' Blackburn was originally acquired by the Mets from the A's on July 30, 2024, and made five starts before he was diagnosed with spinal fluid leak in his back and had season-ending surgery. He began this season on the injured list with right knee inflammation and an illness delayed his season debut until June 3. After a 7.71 ERA in six appearances, Blackburn returned to the IL with right shoulder impingement before getting activated last week. 'It's been weird,' Blackburn said. 'Honestly, I didn't know what to expect or what to do with it. I just tried to continue to stay ready, continue to throw, continue to be available unless someone called.' Blackburn is 22-31 with a 4.96 ERA in 93 games (86 starts) since debuting with the A's in 2017. He went 7-6 with a 4.28 ERA in 21 games for the A's in 2022 and made his lone All-Star team. To clear room on the roster for Blackburn, Allan Winans was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. ___ AP MLB:
