The National Commission for Women (NCW) has pulled up West Bengal's Birbhum district police for submitting a "grossly inadequate" action taken report (ATR) in connection with the case involving Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal, who was allegedly heard hurling "filthy, unspeakable abuses" at a police officer in a viral audio clip.In a strongly worded second letter sent on Tuesday to Birbhum SP, the commission expressed "serious dissatisfaction" with the police response and directed the district authorities to submit a revised ATR within five working days."While an ATR has been received, it is grossly inadequate in substance and fails to comply with the requisitions made by the Commission," NCW member Archana Majumdar wrote. The letter noted that the response lacked certified copies of the FIR, the accused's medical examination report, and other supporting documents, all of which had been specifically sought.Raising concerns about alleged procedural lapses, the NCW questioned whether the interrogation of the accused was videographed, as is mandatory in cases involving serious allegations. The Commission also flagged the alleged failure to upload the FIR online, which it said violates norms aimed at ensuring transparency and public access. The commission noted that while the mobile phone of the complainant - the officer-in-charge of Bolpur police station - was seized, no digital devices belonging to Mondal had been taken into custody.Calling this a "critical oversight," the NCW stressed that digital evidence could be crucial to the investigation."The seriousness of the charges warrants urgent custodial investigation. However, records reveal that the accused continues to remain at large, without any firm steps taken toward his apprehension," Majumdar said in her letter.Referring to the "differential treatment" being meted out, the NCW remarked, "Had such an offence been committed by any ordinary citizen, the law would have acted with urgency. The law cannot be different for the influential."The commission warned that inaction in the matter would send a "dangerous and demoralising message to society, especially to police officers and their families, that even a man in uniform cannot protect his own family from street-level criminals backed by political power."Invoking Section 10(4) of the NCW Act, the Commission directed Birbhum police to add relevant cognisable sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to the FIR, including Sections 74, 75, 79, 132, 224, 351(3), and 352, citing the grave nature of the allegations. It also instructed the police to seize Mondal's digital devices without delay, review the need for custodial interrogation, and confirm whether his questioning was videographed. If not, reasons for non-compliance must be submitted.

Bengal porn racket case: Prime accused says she was framed, seeks fair probe
Kolkata: Shweta Khan alias Fultusi, the prime accused behind the West Bengal porn racket case, said on Thursday that she had been framed in the matter and her side of the story should also be heard. The West Bengal Police arrested her on Wednesday night. Khan will be presented at a trial court in the Howrah district later in the day. Earlier in the day, she was taken to the Domjur Rural Hospital in the same district, where she made these claims while speaking to the waiting media persons. 'I am being framed in the case. Let my side of the story be heard, also, and let the investigators check the facts. I have been arrested based on a complaint by the family members of a particular woman. That woman concerned is married and even has a kid,' Khan told media persons. After being on the run for quite some time, Khan was arrested on Wednesday night from a hideout at Alipore in South Kolkata. Earlier in the day on Wednesday, the policemen first arrested her son Aryan Khan and then her daughter Zoya Khan, a co-accused in the porn racket case. Based on the questioning of Aryan and Zoya, the state police arrested Shweta Khan, sources had said. The main charges against Shweta, Aryan, and Zoya are holding a woman from the North 24 Parganas district captive for six months and brutally assaulting her with an iron rod after she refused to participate in pornographic video shoots allegedly orchestrated by the three accused. Since Zoya is a minor, her case will be processed under the Juvenile Justice Act and referred to the Juvenile Justice Board. Aryan has already denied his involvement in the porn racket and said that he had a relationship with the victim woman who wanted to marry him. On Wednesday, police action in the matter was intensified after the National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognizance of the incident and wrote to the West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar, demanding immediate arrests under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The NCW also instructed the state police to ensure that the victim receives free medical treatment and psychological counselling. Additionally, the Commission has directed the DGP to submit a detailed action-taken report within three days. Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister, Sukanta Majumdar, has alleged that Shweta Khan has close links with several senior leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress.

2 held in Punjab for Haridwar firing on Haryana hotelier on June 2
Haridwar: Two contract killers suspected to be behind the June 2 firing on a 25-year-old Haryana-based hotelier near the Sukhi rivulet in Haridwar were arrested in Punjab and brought to Haridwar on Thursday, police said. 'Two of the five accused involved in firing on Arun near Sukhi rivulet in Haridwar on June 2 have been arrested on Wednesday night. During interrogation, both confessed to being active members of the Nandu alias Kapil Sagwan gang, and admitted the attack was part of a long-standing gang rivalry with the Manjeet Mahal gang,' senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Haridwar district Pramendra Dobhal said The police have identified the accused as Manav Hans (21) from Hargobind Nagar in Punjab's Kapurthala and Gaurav Kumar (28) from Nawanshahr in Punjab. 'The arrested accused also have multiple serious criminal cases registered against them in Punjab,' Dobhal said. The police are tracing three more accused — Himanshu Sood, Bobby, and Shammi Khan — who are currently on the run. Dobhal said that Arun, a resident of Haryana's Rohtak, was shot near the Sukhi bridge in the Kankhal area by unidentified bike-borne assailants on June 2, following which he was taken to a nearby hospital. Based on his father's complaint, a case was registered under Section 109(2) (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Kotwali Nagar police station. 'The Haridwar police formed a joint investigation team. Utilising advanced surveillance, informant networks, and analysis of over 1,000 CCTV footages, police conducted an extensive manhunt across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab,' Dobhal said. According to the ongoing investigation, the June 2 firing was allegedly orchestrated by gang leader Nandu, who reportedly continues to direct operations remotely from abroad. 'The attackers used a pistol, motorcycle, all of which were traced by vigilant police work,' Dobhal said. Uttarakhand director general of police Deepam Seth has instructed Dobhal to ensure the strictest legal action against the arrested criminals and to expedite the arrest of the remaining accused. In a major breakthrough, Haridwar Police have successfully foiled a planned Gangwar-related contract killing and arrested two key accused from Punjab. The operation is linked to a violent rivalry between the notorious Nandu and Manjeet Mahal gangs, which recently escalated with a targeted shooting at a hotelier in Haridwar.
