With Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian upstarts Pyramids FC boasting an array of talent, the spotlight will be on six stand-out players whose performances could tilt the balance in favour of their teams.
The teams go head-to-head at the sold-out Loftus Versfeld in Saturday's CAF Champions League final first-leg clash (3pm kick-off), and eyes will be trained on the stand-out players who could very well determine the fate of their teams.
Sundowns will bank on the brilliance of Teboho Mokoena, Lucas Ribeiro and Ronwen Williams.
The visiting Pyramids expect their kingpins Mohamed Chibi, Fiston Mayele and Mostafa Fethi will make decisive contributions on the day.
Each of these players brings a unique skill-set that enhances the already formidable arsenal of the teams... 1 Teboho Mokoena (Sundowns)
Mokoena, a constant force in Sundowns' team, has made a name for himself as a playmaking midfielder renowned for his adeptness at manipulating the tempo of games.
While he may not possess the physicality that some of his peers boast, Mokoena offsets this with various skills that enable him to create opportunities and control matches with finesse.
Consistency is a hallmark of Mokoena's career. His steady performances have forged his reputation as the backbone of the team.
2 Lucas Ribeiro Costa (Sundowns)
In the vibrant tapestry of SA football, few threads shimmer quite as brightly as that of Brazilian Lucas Ribeiro Costa, the Sundowns forward renowned for his exceptional skills.
Praised for his dribbling, shooting, passing, and blistering pace, Ribeiro has carved a niche in the Premiership, earning accolades as one of the league's most gifted athletes.
Ribeiro has showcased a unique flair that captivates fans and analysts alike. His technical prowess enables him to weave through defenders with ease.
3 Ronwen Williams (Sundowns)
Few players possess the poise and talent that goalkeeper Ronwen Williams brings to the pitch.
His exceptional shot-stopping ability and sharp reflexes consistently distinguished him as one of the country's finest talents.
Whether it's the tension of a cup final or the intensity of league match play, Williams' prowess offers the team a formidable presence between the posts.
The Bafana star is noted for his astonishing agility. During penalty shootouts, he's become a reliable saviour for his team.
4 Mostafa Fethi (Pyramids FC)
In the competitive landscape of African football, few players stand out like Mostafa Fathi, Pyramids' right wing.
With an enviable skill-set and an innate ability to control the ball with finesse, Fathi has become a key player for his club and a pivotal figure in the broader narrative of Egyptian football.
Fathi's playing style is defined by his exceptional ball control, which allows him to navigate through opposition defences.
He can adapt to multiple positions with aplomb.
5 Mohamed Chibi (Pyramids FC)
As a defender, his robust athleticism and remarkable agility make him a daunting figure for attackers, often disrupting their rhythm and thwarting goal-scoring opportunities.
His most outstanding asset is his tactical awareness.
Chibi demonstrates an innate ability to read the game, consistently anticipating the opposition's moves.
This foresight allows him to position himself adeptly, cutting off passing lanes and intercepting balls, a skill that has saved his team on numerous occasions.
6 Fiston Mayele (Pyramids FC)
The Democratic Republic of Congo-born striker Fiston Mayele knows the path to the opposition's goals.
As a Kaizer Chiefs transfer target, he'll attract loads of attention at Loftus.
With an unerring sense of position and an instinct for scoring, Mayele has quickly established himself as an asset to his team.
Yet, like any athlete, he possesses a volatile mix of strengths and weaknesses that shape his dynamic performance on the field.

Brazil held in Ancelotti debut, Paraguay move closer to qualifying

MONTEVIDEO - Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach of Brazil ended in a goalless draw in Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying on Thursday. Argentina, already assured of a place in next year's tournament, beat Chile 1-0 in Santiago with a goal from Julian Alvarez, a result which guarantees Lionel Scaloni's team top spot and leaves bottom placed 'La Roja' with virtually no hope of qualifying. Ancelotti, the 65-year-old Italian, who left Real Madrid at the end of the European season, has been charged with taking Brazil through the latter stages of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The former AC Milan and Chelsea manager replaced Dorival Junior, who was sacked at the end of March after the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of reigning champions and bitter rivals Argentina. Thursday's result leaves the Selecao in fourth place in the qualifying table on 22 points while Ecuador, the surprise package in the campaign, remain in second on 24 points. Argentina lead the standings on 34 points and are the only team to have officially secured their place in the tournament which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Paraguay, who enjoyed a 2-0 win over Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay, sit in third place, level on points with Ecuador. Ecuador knew a win would put them on the brink of qualification and there was a packed crowd at the Estadio Monumental in Guayaquil. But the home side were dealt a blow just before kick-off when goalkeeper Hernan Galindez suffered a muscle strain in the warm-up and replacement Gonzalo Valle was hurriedly sent out to make his debut. If Valle had any nerves they eased when he did well to parry a shot from inside the box from Vinicius Jr. who had been set up by Gerson following a turnover. Chances were limited in a contest where neither side was able to get control of midfield. The pattern continued after the break with Ecuador, missing their injured striker and talisman Enner Valencia, struggling to pose a threat. Real Madrid star Vinicius was quiet for much of the game and with Rodrygo absent, Brazil also lacked potency in attack. The best opening came in the 75th minute when Vinicius broke down the left and cut back to Casemiro, but the Manchester United midfielder, recalled to the national side by Ancelotti, saw a tame side-footed effort easily dealt with by Valle. PATIENCE While there was no instant impact from Ancelotti, Vinicius, who played under the coach in Madrid, said he needed time to make his impact felt. "I'm very happy to have Ancelotti here with us, because I've always said he's the best coach I've ever worked with. Having the opportunity to work with him in the Brazilian national team is the best," the winger told SporTV. "He hasn't had time to show his work, his game plan, because he's only had two or three days of training," he added. Atletico Madrid striker Alvarez put Argentina ahead at the Estadio Nacional in the 16th minute with a deft finish after he had been put through by a perfectly weighted pass from Thiago Almada. Lionel Messi came off the bench in the 57th minute but Chile sensed a chance to get something from the game and created more as the game progressed. Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez made a series of crucial saves and Lucas Cepeda went closest with a fierce shot which struck the bar. Cepeda then had the best chance of the game when he was found at the back post but he blasted his volley wide. Messi set up Giuliano Simeone with a chance to make it 2-0 but the son of former Argentina captain and Atletico Madrid coach Diego, fired his shot into the side netting. A header from midfielder Matías Galarza just 13 minutes into the game and a late penalty from Julio Enciso earned Paraguay a crucial victory over a depleted Uruguay. The victory left Paraguay on the verge of securing their return to the World Cup for the first time since qualifying for the 2010 finals in South Africa. Victory in Sao Paulo on Tuesday against Brazil would secure their place in the tournament. The top six teams in the 10-team qualifying group head directly into the World Cup draw while the seventh placed team must enter the inter-confederation playoffs.

Mokwena, who began his coaching career with Mamelodi Sundowns, previously spent three years at Pirates as Milutin Sredojević's assistant coach. After the Serb left the club suddenly in 2019, Mokwena was appointed interim head coach. After a brief spell in charge of Chippa United, Mokwena returned to Sundowns in 2020 as co-coach alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and was promoted to head coach in 2022. During his time with Sundowns, the club won three league titles. However, after winning the title again in the 2023/24 season, Mokwena was unceremoniously sacked. He then moved abroad to Morocco to take charge of Wydad. Mokwena's ability to win league titles has been seen as a positive that could land him the Pirates job. During Riveiro's era, Ezikamagebhula fell short in the league — something the club's hierarchy and demanding fans have been desperate to win. Pirates will have to act quickly if they want to appoint Mokwena, as newly crowned African champions Pyramids FC are reportedly also interested in his services. Mokwena was also linked with Egyptian giants Zamalek, but he's since revealed he's turned the down. 'Maybe the easiest to bat away would be Zamalek,' Mokwena added. 'Well, I didn't hear from them (Zamalek) after I had said I heard that coach Pitso [Mosimane] is also in the running for the position." 'It's an absolute honour to captain Bafana Bafana, and I can't wait for the match against Tanzania at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday evening,' he said, exuding enthusiasm and commitment. Basadien, a 27-year-old full-back, expressed his excitement and pride about leading the national team into their June fixtures. He recalls the impact of watching Bafana Bafana stars like Benni McCarthy and playing alongside Nasief Morris. 'Growing up, I admired professionals like Benni McCarthy, and my time with Nasief Morris taught me invaluable lessons about leadership and camaraderie,' Basadien reflected. He acknowledged Morris' mentorship: 'I was privileged to play with him, and his leadership qualities left a mark on me. It has always been about learning from those who paved the way for us. I aim to take those lessons and help guide the younger players in our squad.' As Basadien steps into this leadership role, he spearheads a predominantly youthful squad in the absence of several senior players. His commitment to nurturing emerging talents speaks volumes about his maturity and vision. 'I am ready and prepared to help those younger players in the team,' he affirmed. With the first match against Tanzania looming, all eyes will be on Basadien and his ability to inspire a new generation of footballers, showcasing the strength of leadership through experience and shared learning. Broos appointed Orlando Pirates defender Nkosinathi Sibisi as the captain for the match against Mozambique on Tuesday. This decision, born from a thorough evaluation of the squad, highlights Sibisi's rich experience and established rapport with fellow players, particularly the nine Buccaneers who form part of the national team setup. Sibisi was his choice after careful consideration and a clear need for leadership. 'It was a bit of searching, but I think with Sibisi we have a good captain,' he emphasised. 'He is an experienced player who has been with Bafana Bafana since I have been here, from the first game.' Sibisi, who has become an integral part of the team during Broos's tenure, brings not only skills on the pitch but also the respect and admiration of his teammates. 'He is a guy who has the respect of everybody,' Broos observed, reinforcing the idea that leadership qualities extend far beyond tactical know-how.
