Mourinho's Fenerbahce draws with Benfica, Bodo/Glimt wins big in Champions League playoffs 1st legs
Fenerbahce drew 0-0 at home against Benfica in the first leg of their qualifying playoff, despite the Portuguese team having a player sent off in the 71st minute.
In the north of Norway, Bodo/Glimt's fairytale rise in European soccer continued with a 5-0 rout of Sturm Graz in their playoff first leg.
Celtic failed to take home advantage in a 0-0 draw with Kairat Almaty, which hosts the return game four time zones from Scotland in Kazakhstan next Tuesday.
Basel captain Xherdan Shaqiri scored early with a penalty but the Swiss champion was held 1-1 at home by Copenhagen.
Seven playoffs will be decided with return games on Tuesday and Wednesday next week with the winners completing the 36-team Champions League lineup. The second-leg games include unheralded Pafos of Cyprus holding a 2-1 lead at home against Red Star Belgrade.
The Champions League draw ceremony to find out each team's eight opponents in the single-standings league format will be made Aug. 28 in Monaco.
Fenerbahce has not played for 17 years in the main Champions League, that Mourinho won twice: with Inter Milan in 2010 and Porto in 2004.
Mourinho's team dominated the last 20 minutes of play in Istanbul after Benfica midfielder Florentino was sent off for being shown a second yellow card. A video review confirmed an offside call after Fenerbahce forward Youssef En-Nesyri thought he had scored in the 81st.

Liverpool closer to finding out Champions League opponents with reunion on cards
Liverpool is set to find out its Champions League journey next week, with a potential surprise reunion on the horizon following the completion of the first leg of the playoffs. Simon Mignolet, a former Red who made 204 appearances over six years, aided Club Brugge in securing an unexpected 3-1 victory against Rangers at Ibrox on Tuesday, putting the Belgians in a favorable position to advance. Ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, currently in his second stint at Celtic, faces a tougher challenge as the Glasgow team was held to a goalless draw at home by underdogs FC Kairat from Kazakhstan. Another Anfield-linked manager, former Reds striker Robbie Keane, witnessed his Ferencvaros team, which included Naby Keita as an unused substitute, suffer a 3-1 defeat at home to Qarabag of Azerbaijan. READ MORE: Arne Slot provides firm answer to transfer speculation amid Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi uncertainty READ MORE: Liverpool urged to quit Alexander Isak pursuit and sign 'better fit' for less money The Champions League proper is likely to see a new entrant in the form of Bodo/Glimt, a Norwegian team that has never progressed beyond the playoffs but did reach the Europa League semifinals last season. Bodo/Glimt thrashed Sturm Graz of Austria 5-0. With seven clubs moving from the playoffs to the league stage, the remaining three ties hang in the balance. Basel and Copenhagen ended in a 1-1 draw, while Fenerbahce and Benfica played out a goalless draw in Turkey. However, there was a shock result when Cypriot side Pafos, making its Champions League debut, triumphed 2-1 at Red Star Belgrade. The second legs are set to take place next Tuesday and Wednesday, with the draw for the league stage scheduled in Monaco next Thursday at 6pm. Just like last season, a total of 36 teams will comprise the initial league stage. Each team will face eight different opponents, with four matches at home and four away. Teams from the same country won't be pitted against each other, with the draw for the fixtures divided into teams playing two opponents from each of the four pots, which are determined by UEFA coefficient, the record of each club in European competition over the past five years. Liverpool already knows it is in pot one, where it'll be joined by English rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona, German outfits Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, and this season's finalists PSG and Inter. The remaining Premier League clubs - Arsenal, Tottenham, and Newcastle - are provisionally in pots 2, 3, and 4, respectively, while Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, and Athletic Bilbao have all qualified from Spain. Italy is further represented by Napoli, Atalanta, and Juventus, while Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt round off the German quartet. PSV and Ajax have qualified from Holland, Marseille and Monaco are in from France, and Sporting Lisbon from Portugal. Olympiakos of Greece, Slavia Prague of Czechia, Turkish side Galatasaray, and Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise make up the remainder. The final of this season's Champions League is set to unfold in Budapest on 30 May.

BBC to stream Linfield v Shelbourne second leg
The BBC will show the second leg of the Uefa Conference League play-off between Linfield and Shelbourne on Thursday, 29 August (19:45 BST). The return game at Windsor Park in Belfast will be available to watch on the BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport website and app. Thursday's first leg will also be shown on the iPlayer, website and app, with coverage beginning at 19:40 BST (19:45 kick-off). A place in the lucrative league phase of the competition is the prize on offer. The teams have already met in European competition this term, having been paired together in the first round of Champions League qualifying in July. Shelbourne ran out 2-1 aggregate victors on that occasion, winning the first leg 1-0 at Tolka Park, followed by a 1-1 draw at Windsor Park. Since dropping into the Uefa Conference League, Linfield have seen off Lithuania's Zalgiris and Vikingur of the Faroe Islands in the second and third qualifying rounds of that competition. Were they to overcome their Irish Premier Division opponents, David Healy's side would emulate the achievement of Larne, who became the first Irish Premiership side to progress to the group or league stages of a major European competition last season. After defeating Linfield, Shelbourne lost to Qarabag of Azerbaijan in the Champions League second qualifying round and then fell to Croatian outfit Rijeka in the Europa League third qualifying round.
