Consolidate reforms, focus on key ops, FM Nirmala Sitharaman tells CBDT
NEW DELHI: The
income tax department
and the revenue department must consolidate reforms and focus on key operational priorities in the areas identified in June this year, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Thursday.
"I would want the CBDT and the department of revenue to continue focussed work on the areas identified in June 2025," Sitharaman said at 166th Income Tax Day celebrations. FM recalled the five areas that included accelerating the disposal of disputed tax demands pending before the faceless appellate authorities and ensure timely resolution of litigation backlog. It also includes identifying and withdrawing departmental appeals falling below the revised monetary threshold announced during the 2024-25 Budget within the next three months.
"I would want these cleared within the next three months," said Sitharaman, adding that this was identified among the key focus areas during the principal chief commissioners meeting in June 2025.
Among the other key areas, it was also agreed to ensure timely processing of tax refunds and proactive and timely resolution of taxpayer grievance, analyse the grievances and devise strategies not only to resolve the existing pendency but also to address the challenges that are causing the grievances.

The fifth area was to undertake region wise performance reviews to help identify factors affecting performance and streamline operations through indicators such as grievance disposal and orders giving effect (OGE).
"The delay in giving OGE (orders giving effect) issuance is not explainable," Sitharaman said and urged the department to accelerate the process of issuing OGEs.
FM also said the CBDT must focus on developing its technological capabilities to ensure more effective management of systems and IT related issues.

Himachal cabinet approves special relief package for disaster-hit families
Shimla: The council of ministers led-by chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday approved a special relief package for the monsoon disaster-affected families of Himachal Pradesh. Under the special package, the compensation amount of Rs 1.30 lakh for a completely damaged house was increased to Rs 7 lakh, and Rs 12,500 for a partially damaged house was enhanced to Rs 1 lakh. The compensation of Rs 10,000 earmarked for a damaged shop or a dhaba earlier was increased to Rs 1 lakh, while the assistance for a damaged cowshed has been increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000. An aid of Rs 50,000 will be provided to a tenant for damage or loss of belongings, whereas the owner will receive Rs 70,000 for such loss. The state govt will grant Rs 55,000 for the loss of large milch animal instead of Rs 37,500 fixed earlier, while the compensation for the loss of goat, pig, sheep, and lamb was increased from Rs 4,000 to Rs 9,000 per animal. The relief package also includes Rs 25,000 as compensation for the fully damaged poly-houses and Rs 50,000 for desilting of houses. Approval was also accorded to grant a 50% concession in motor vehicle tax for owners scrapping vehicles that fall under Pre-BIS, BS-I, and BS-II emission norms through a registered vehicle scrapping facility. The creation and filling of eight posts of various categories in the pain and palliative care cell under the department of radiotherapy at IGMC, Shimla, was also approved.
