YSRCP leader Chevireddy detained in liquor scam case in Bengaluru

VIJAYAWADA: In a significant development in the liquor scam investigation, YSRCP leader and former Chandragiri MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy was detained at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport on Tuesday by immigration authorities while allegedly attempting to travel to Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The SIT team, which is probing the multi-crore liquor scam, had issued a Lookout Circular (LOC) against Bhaskar Reddy a week ago. Acting on the alert, immigration officials stopped him and alerted the AP police.
SIT officers from Vijayawada rushed to Bengaluru, and sources confirmed that Bhaskar is likely to be arrested and brought to Vijayawada by Wednesday night. He will be produced before a local court following his custody. Meanwhile, SIT has filed a memo in court naming Bhaskar Reddy as Accused 38 (A-38) and his son Chevireddy Mohith Reddy as A-39 in the case. Others listed include close aide Venkatesh Naidu (A-34), Balaji Kumar (A-35), Naveen Krishna (A-36), and Hareesh (A-37).
If arrested, Bhaskar would be the first political figure taken into custody.

State govt holds Dharmasthala temple in high regard: Minister

Mandya: The state govt holds the Dharmasthala temple in high regard, and the SIT is conducting an investigation strictly in accordance with a court order, said agriculture Mminister and Mandya district minister N Cheluvarayaswamy. Speaking to reporters on Friday at Mandya, he stressed that in a democracy, public opinion must be respected. "On the religious matter of Dharmasthala, we have more trust than the opposition. Our govt has no grievance against Dharmasthala temple," he said. Commenting on the BJP, he remarked, "The saffron party is in poor shape. Lacking serious issues, they have raked up the Rajanna matter. We know why they dropped him. Rajanna is fine; we are all fine. Let the BJP first resolve its own internal disputes—they cannot even change their Leader of the Opposition." On the vacant ministerial berth, he said the decision rests with the party high command, but expressed hope that it would go to Mandya, recommending PM Narendraswamy for the role. Admitting to reduced fertiliser supply in the state, he blamed the Centre, noting that the shortage is nationwide. "Despite cuts, we are ensuring there is no crisis in Karnataka," he said, advising farmers to use nano-urea to protect soil fertility and crop quality. On the cases involving former MP Prajwal Revanna and actor Darshan, he said the law will take its course. "The Supreme Court's cancellation of Darshan's bail keeps alive hope for an appropriate verdict," he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Schools told to re-upload staff documents after Shalarth scam

In the wake of the Shalarth ID scam in Maharashtra, all government and aided schools across the state have been directed to re-upload original documents of teaching and non-teaching staff appointed between November 2012 and July 2025 for verification. Schools have been told to complete the process by the end of August. Commissioner of Education Sachindra Pratap Singh has issued a letter to all education officers instructing them to oversee and complete the verification drive. Local officers are to ensure schools upload all required documents, which will be verified along with the staff members' Shalarth ID. The scam, which came to light in Nagpur division, exposed major irregularities in teacher recruitment. Investigations revealed the use of fake Shalarth IDs and bogus TET certificates to fraudulently approve and pay non-existent staff. In response, the state government has recently formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. Simultaneously the education department has expanded the verification drive to all divisions. As per the official letter, for staff appointed between November 2016 and July 2025, schools must upload the individual approval order, Shalarth ID order, appointment letter from the private management, and joining report. For the earlier period, from November 2012 to November 2016—when Shalarth IDs were not issued—schools must upload the appointment letter, joining report, and individual approval. However, the directive has sparked criticism from schools and staff. Many argue the process is an unnecessary burden on schools which have already done this process at the time of recruitment. Mahendra Ganpule of the Maharashtra School Principals' Association said, 'All these documents are already with the education offices and salary units. Instead of asking schools to repeat the process, the department should verify existing records and demand original documents for suspected entries.' The Shalarth ID is a unique identity for teachers in government and aided school staff in Maharashtra through which employment records are maintained and disbursement of salary and other benefits is ensured. Unravelling of the scam had shown that multiple fake IDs were created on the government's salary portal for teaching and non-teaching staff in government and aided schools to disburse salaries to fake teachers. While there have been few arrests by Nagpur police in this case, the state-formed SIT arrested the alleged mastermind of the scam, Nilesh Waghmare, earlier this week.

Kadapa MLA walks out of I-Day parade over protocol lapses

T Tired of too many ads? go ad free now irupati: Kadapa TDP legislator R Madhavi Reddy walked out of the Independence Day parade and celebrations over protocol lapses at the police parade grounds in Kadapa on Friday. When the MLA, along with her husband, TDP district president R Sreenivasulu Reddy, reached the venue, she found that no official seating arrangements were made for her near the podium. After being forced to stand for a long time, Madhavi Reddy expressed her displeasure with Kadapa district joint collector Aditi Singh and left the venue. The MLA said she will complain about the issue to the assembly speaker and the assembly privileges committee. Stating that she had no hard feelings against anyone, the govt whip, however, insisted that her seat deserved some respect. Madhavi Reddy hit the headlines twice in the past on similar grounds, when she was allegedly denied a chair in the Kadapa municipal corporation meeting, where she stood next to the YSRCP mayor's chair throughout the entire proceedings.
