Spanish towns ban on religious gatherings in sports centres becomes flashpoint
The ban — approved last week by the conservative local government of Jumilla, a town of 27,000 — has since become a flashpoint. Its critics, including Spain's leftwing national government, have condemned the measure as discriminatory while some on the right are celebrating it as a means to uphold the nation's Christian culture.
Spain's Migration Minister Elma Saiz said on Friday the ban was 'shameful," and urged local leaders to 'take a step back" and apologise to local residents.
Saiz told Spain's Antena 3 broadcaster that the measure is 'attacking and harming people, citizens who have been living for decades in our towns, in our cities, in our country, contributing and perfectly integrated without any problems of coexistence".
The ban is the latest controversy involving Spain's hot-button issues of immigration and multi-culturalism, following clashes last month in the southern Murcia region between far-right groups and local residents and migrants. They erupted after an elderly resident in the town of Torre-Pacheco was beaten up by assailants believed to be of Moroccan origin, which prompted far-right groups to call for retribution on the area's large migrant population.
The town's mayor Seve González told Spain's El País newspaper that the measure did not single out any one group and that her government's wanted to 'promote cultural campaigns that defend our identity".
The measure was initially proposed by the far-right Vox party and then amended and approved by the centre-right Popular Party, to which the mayor belongs. It stipulates that municipal sports facilities — where the town's Muslim community has held religious celebrations — cannot be used for cultural, social or religious activities unrelated to the city council.
Mohamed El Ghaidouni, secretary of the Union of Islamic Communities of Spain that represents more than 900 Muslim communities in the country, called the ban 'institutionalised Islamophobia".
He criticised the local government's justification for the motion and its allegation that two main Muslim festivals traditionally celebrated in the sports centres — Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Islamic holy month of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, or 'Feast of the Sacrifice" — were 'foreign to the town's identity".
The ban, he added, 'clashes with the institutions of the Spanish state" that protect religious freedom.
Vox's branch in the Murcia region celebrated it, saying Wednesday on X that 'Spain is and always will be a land of Christian roots!" 'We must protect public spaces from practices foreign to our culture and our way of life," the party's leader Santiago Abascal wrote Friday, adding that 'Spain is not Al Andalus," referencing the historic name for Islamic Spain.
For centuries, Spain was ruled by Muslims, whose influence is present both in the Spanish language and in many of the country's most celebrated landmarks, including Granada's famed Moorish Alhambra Palace. Islamic rule ended in 1492 when the last Arab kingdom in Spain fell to the Catholics.
Right-wing governments elsewhere in Europe have passed measures similar to the ban in Jumilla, striking at the heart of ongoing debates about nationalism and religious pluralism.
Last year in Monfalcone, a large industrial port city in northeastern Italy with a significant Bangladeshi immigrant population, its far-right mayor, Anna Maria Cisint, banned prayers outside of places of worship. The move led to protests involving some 8,000 people. The city's Muslim community is appealing the ban in a regional court. (AP) SCY SCY

Philippines voices concern over 'dangerous' Chinese actions after Scarborough Shoal collision
Synopsis The Philippines has condemned China's dangerous maneuvers and unlawful interference during a resupply mission to Filipino fishermen near Scarborough Shoal, resulting in a collision between vessels. The incident, which involved a Chinese navy ship ramming a Philippine Coast Guard vessel, has heightened tensions in the South China Sea. The U.S. AP In this photo, taken from video and provided by the Philippine Coast Guard, a damaged Chinese Coast Guard ship, right, is seen beside a Chinese Navy vessel, left, after they accidentally collided while chasing a Philippine fisheries boat near Scarborough Shoal in the disputed South China Sea on Monday Aug. 11, 2025. (Philippine Coast Guard via AP) The Philippines expressed serious concern on Tuesday over what it called "dangerous manoeuvres and unlawful interference" by Chinese vessels during a coast guard supply mission for Filipino fishermen in the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. Manila's Coast Guard deployed three vessels on Monday to deliver supplies, such as fuel and ice, to dozens of fishermen operating around the disputed atoll when they encountered "hazardous" and "blocking actions" from Chinese vessels in the area. "Their actions not only posed a grave danger to Philippine personnel and vessels, but also resulted in the unfortunate collision between the two Chinese vessels," the Philippine foreign ministry said in a statement. Philippine Coast Guard footage showed a Chinese Coast Guard ship trailing the PCG vessel before a Chinese navy ship suddenly cut across its path, colliding with it and damaging the Coast Guard's forecastle. It was the first known collision between Chinese vessels in the area. "Our assessment is that the real objective of the PLA Navy ship is to ram our Philippine Coast Guard (vessel). That is also (the) assessment of our Philippine Coast Guard," Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner told reporters on Tuesday. China's actions also drew condemnation from the United States, a treaty ally of the Philippines. "We condemn this latest reckless action by China directed against a Philippine vessel... and commend the Philippine Coast Guard for their professionalism and their offer to render assistance," U.S. Ambassador to Manila, MaryKay Carlson, said on X. China's defence ministry and its embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to requests for comment. On Monday, China's coast guard said it took necessary measures to expel Philippine vessels from waters around the Scarborough Shoal. The confrontation marks the latest in a series of incidents amid a period of heightened tensions between Manila and Beijing over territorial disputes in the South China Sea. A 2016 ruling of an international arbitral tribunal voided Beijing's sweeping claims in the region, saying they had no basis under international law, a decision China rejects. PCG spokesperson Jay Tarriela said the PCG offered medical and search-and-rescue assistance via radio, but received no response from the Chinese side. He added there was no confirmation on whether any Chinese crew members were injured during the clash. "Yesterday's incident demonstrates the importance of adhering to international maritime rules," the Philippine foreign ministry said. It reaffirmed its commitment to diplomacy and dialogue in resolving differences. Rear Admiral Roy Trinidad, Philippine navy spokesperson for the South China Sea, warned at a press briefing on Tuesday that similar incidents could happen again as long as China continued to conduct what he called "illegal, coercive, aggressive and deceptive" activities in the strategic waterway.

‘No world free from Trump's cruelty': Zohran Mamdani launches tour in NYC linking Andrew Cuomo with US President; says they are ‘far too similar'
Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani (AP) NYC democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani kicked off a tour in the city's five boroughs on Monday, emphasizing a key message that connects former governor Andrew Cuomo with US President Donald Trump . 'There is no world that will be free from Trump's cruelty,' Mamdani stated, cautioning that Trump's policies could strip millions of healthcare, Medicaid, food, and housing support, reported the Washington Times. 'We see far too many [similarities] between Donald Trump and Andrew Cuomo,' he said. 'Far too many stories that make clear that both administrations have been characterized by corruption, by a sense of impunity, by an inability of an executive to understand that 'No means no.'' Mamdani joined US Rep. Jerry Nadler and other city leaders in Midtown Manhattan to showcase his broad support ahead of the November election, despite the lack of endorsement from key Democratic Party figures. 'The truth is Cuomo and Trump are very similar,' said Nadler in the event on Monday, reported CNN. 'Both use their power to serve themselves and their wealthy donors, not the people.' With less than three months remaining before the November general elections, both Mamdani and Cuomo, who is now running as an independent following his surprise defeat in the June primary, are rallying around critical points of attack. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo 'Somewhere last night in New York City, a single mother and her children slept at a homeless shelter because you, assemblyman @ZohranKMamdani are occupying her rent controlled apartment,' said Cuomo through a post on X. Cuomo pointed out that Mamdani's background as the son of Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair to claim his housing policies are hypocritical. 'Today, I am calling on you to move out immediately and give your affordable housing back to an unhoused family who need it. Leaders must show moral clarity. Time to move out,' he said. Mamdani pushed back, saying he is 'not threatened by a former governor who cannot distinguish between rent control and rent stabilization.' Nearly half of New York City's apartments, about 960,000 units, are rent-stabilized, offering tenants protection against steep rent increases and the right to renew their leases, reports the Washington Times. Mamdani described Cuomo's attack as evidence of his 'petty vindictiveness' and shows that he lives in his mind 'rent-free.'
