KMC takes neuroplastic surgeries to patients

The Hindu05-07-2025
The Department of Neurosurgery at the Government Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) Hospital has been restoring the appearance and functionality of patients who need skull and facial reconstruction following neurosurgeries for complex head traumas, tumours or other conditions. Such neuroplastic surgeries are being covered under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS).
In neuroplastic surgery, a relatively new sub-speciality, surgeons deal with the reconstruction of the scalp and skull following neurological surgeries that result in 'challenging deformities' in patients. Patients who suffer complex head injury with facial trauma, children with spinal dysraphism (congenital birth defect affecting the spine), craniosynostosis, and complex scalp and orbital facial tumours can benefit from neuroplastic surgeries, M. Kodeeswaran, head of department, Neurosurgery, KMC, said.
In a letter published in the Neurological Review, Dr. Kodeeswaran et al have discussed the need for neuroplastic surgery as a new neurosurgical sub-specialty in the Asian continent. The doctors noted that complex head trauma includes fracture of the frontal, temporal, nasal, maxillary and mandibular bones leading to gross deformities in patients. They are usually young adults who, following a road traffic accident, undergo traumatic fractures of the face. They need urgent surgical intervention and cosmetic reconstruction for better patient outcomes, they said.
'Neurosurgeons do the primary treatment. Take for instance, patients with severe head injury undergo a surgery to address the issue but most often, they end up with a deformity. It is crucial to treat such patients in the primary setting itself so that their cosmetic appearance is good. Otherwise, they may face issues such as when going for work,' he said.
At KMC, doctors have slowly yet steadily built a system to address the needs of such patients. 'We do 3D cranioplasty. In case of a skull defect after surgery, we design the skull and have 3D printed implants for patients. We have done such procedures for 40 to 50 patients so far, and it is covered under CMCHIS. We obtained special approval under the scheme so that patients get the benefits free of cost,' Dr. Kodeeswaran added.
Neuroplastic surgery involves cosmetic corrections left behind in spinal dysraphism and craniosynostosis in children. 'We need to plan in advance and take up primary cosmetic correction too,' he said.

Over the next six months, 1,256 high-level health camps will be organised on all working Saturdays, where specialists from at least 15 different specialties will provide tests and free consultations. In Madurai, a total of 1,005 people turned up at the camp held at Govt Model Girls Higher Secondary School at Othakadai. Commercial taxes minister P Moorthy presided over the inauguration. In Trichy, the camp was launched by municipal administration minister K N Nehru at Thillai Nagar. Officials said that 45 such camps will be conducted in the city. Deputy director of health services (DDHS), Madurai, Dr P Kumaragurubaran, said there were facilities for ECG, echo tests, x-rays, and scans in the camp. After registration, blood sample of the patients was collected, before they were sent to the general physician. They were further advised to go to specialists, the DDHS said. "They leave the premises with their medical report as well as the medicines prescribed," he said. Nehru said patients requiring follow-ups and intensive treatments will be treated using the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance (CMCHIS) scheme. Disability certificates can also be obtained from the camp. Those requiring cataract surgeries were referred to KAPV govt medical college hospital. Officials said Ayushman Bharath Health Account (ABHA) cards were provided for beneficiaries based on their Aadhaar card. The Madurai camp also had a cancer screening facility for cervical cancer and breast cancer, both of which can be identified immediately. In paediatrics, a six-year-old was identified with heart disease and referred to a govt hospital. In obstetrics and gynaecology, doctors observed anaemia and high blood pressure in most patients. They were made aware of cervical cancer screening to be undertaken every three years for married women, and how to identify breast cancer at home. District collector K J Praveen Kumar and Govt Rajaji Hospital dean Dr L Arul Sundaresh Kumar visited the camp. Areas concentrated with urban poor in Trichy city will be focused in the next set of health camps expected to go on for a year. Reacting to a question on a case filed by AIADMK leader C Ve Shanmugam challenging the usage of CM Stalin's name in govt schemes, Nehru said, "Even they (ADMK) launched several schemes after their leader Amma (J Jayalalithaa)." 5 common mistakes that attract mosquitoes to you

They may be tiny, but mosquitoes are considered the deadliest animals on Earth, responsible for spreading diseases like malaria, dengue, Zika, and yellow fever. According to the World Mosquito Program, these buzzing bloodsuckers contribute to over one million deaths every year, making it worth understanding what draws them in. Not considering your blood type Some blood types are more attractive to mosquitoes than others — and unfortunately, this isn't something you can control. In a 2022 study , researchers found that different mosquito species show distinct preferences: Type O: Highly attractive to the Asian tiger mosquito ( Aedes albopictus ) Type AB: A favorite of the marsh mosquito ( Anopheles gambiae ) Even more interesting : around 80% of people naturally secrete a substance through their skin that reveals their blood type. If you're a "secretor," you're more likely to get bitten — regardless of your actual blood group. Producing more carbon dioxide Mosquitoes have a strong sense for carbon dioxide, and they can detect it from over 100 feet away. That's bad news if you breathe heavily, talk a lot outdoors, and sleep with your mouth open. Because CO₂ is exhaled through your nose and mouth, mosquitoes are often drawn to your head and face first. That constant buzzing near your ear? Not your imagination. Letting sweat and skin bacteria build up Mosquitoes don't just smell sweat; they analyze it. Your skin produces several chemical cues that they love- lactic acid and ammonia in sweat, bacteria that mix with sweat to form unique body odors, and carboxylic acids, or fatty acids, which one study found in higher concentrations in people most prone to bites. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Cash Roadster Undo Overlooking Factors Like Pregnancy and Alcohol Certain conditions can amplify your mosquito appeal. One such is pregnancy. A 2000 study in Africa found that pregnant women attracted twice as many mosquitoes as non-pregnant women. This was linked to increased carbon dioxide output and higher body temperature during late pregnancy. Another is beer. Even a single bottle can make a difference. In one study, participants who drank a liter of beer attracted significantly more mosquitoes than those who drank water. The reason isn't fully understood, but it may be due to alcohol's effect on body chemistry and temperature. Wearing the wrong clothes and eating the wrong foods Clothing and diet also matter. Mosquitoes are visual hunters, and they're drawn more to dark colors like green and black than to lighter shades such as white or gray. As for food, while evidence is still emerging, one study from the University of Wisconsin found that eating bananas increased mosquito contact. Folk wisdom also points to salty, sweet, spicy, or potassium-rich foods as potential culprits, but the banana link is one of the few backed by research.
