KU gets India Higher Education Award
Machilipatnam: Krishna University (KU) has secured the prestigious India Higher Education Award. Based on performance among government universities across the country, KU secured third position.
At an event organised by Education World on Friday at Hotel Grand in New Delhi on Friday, the award was presented to Krishna University's Rector Prof MV Basaveswara Rao, by Jatin Paranjape, a member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
In his address, Prof Basaveswara Rao spoke about the successes and outcomes achieved by India in the fields of science and technology. He emphasised the need for the intellectual community, which had previously left the country for foreign shores, to return and work wholeheartedly for the nation's development.

KU wins patent for research on dye-sensitised solar cells
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University of Kerala has received an Indian patent for a process of crystalising perovskite quantum dots for dye-sensitised solar cells. The patent is an outcome of collaborative research between the Departments of Physics and Botany, facilitated by KU's Translational Research and Innovation Centre. The researchers have demonstrated the use of their patent for applications such as solar cell and blue light emitting diode. R Jayakrishnan, lead researcher in the team, said the significance of the patent is in having developed a process for achieving crystallisation of the perovskite materials that are being widely researched.

Kerala University wins patent for eco-friendly solar cell technology
The University of Kerala has bagged a patent for developing a unique, eco-friendly process to create materials used in next-generation solar cells. The breakthrough came through a joint effort by the university's Physics and Botany departments, under its Translational Research and Innovation Centre (TRIC-KU). The team of inventors includes Dr. R. Jayakrishnan and Dr. Aruna Raj (both from the Physics Department), and Prof. A. Gangaprasad and Priji S. (both from the Botany Department). They earned the Indian patent for their research on 'A process for the preparation of copper-incorporated Methylammonium Lead Bromide Quantum Dots using Momordica Cochinchinenises (LOUR.) SPRENG. Aril Extract'. The innovation involves using a natural extract from a fruit called Momordica cochinchinensis (Lour.), commonly known as baby jackfruit, to produce a type of material known as perovskite quantum dots. These tiny particles are used in dye-sensitised solar cells, a promising technology for future solar energy. (Perovskite is a class of compounds which have the same type of crystal structure as Calcium Titanate). What makes this development special is the green approach: the team managed to improve the material's performance using a plant extract, avoiding the need for high temperatures and saving energy during production. They also replaced 30% of the toxic lead in the material with copper, making it safer for the environment. Dr. Jayakrishnan said perovskite materials can reach solar energy efficiency levels of around 25%, much higher than traditional silicon solar panels, which usually manage only 15% to 18%. He added the invention is a step forward towards delivering a true carbon neutral process. The researchers also see potential for their patented process to be used in blue LED applications and other electronics. The university hopes to partner with semiconductor industries for commercial production and scale-up of the eco-friendly technology for optoelectronic applications. The project was supported by the university's non-Plan funding during 2022–2023 fiscal.

KU, Warangal, witnessing progress in all aspects, says VC Pratap Reddy
HANAMKONDA Kakatiya University (KU), Warangal, Vice-Chancellor K. Pratap Reddy stated that he has taken all possible measures to strengthen the university in all aspects since assuming the role of VC on October 19, 2024. He added that he was successful to a great extent in these efforts, with the block grant enhanced to ₹144 crore from ₹98 crore and ₹50 crore in development grants besides maintaining the examination schedule. Addressing a press conference along with Registrar Prof. V. Ramchandram here on Tuesday, Mr. Reddy said that university had secured CSR funding from Infosys, with 300 computers sanctioned out of which 120 were received in two phases so far. 'In terms of infrastructure and resource mobilisation, The Geology Department labs were inaugurated, and other departmental labs were strengthened. Additionally, pure drinking water facilities were established in university hostels in collaboration with Bala Vikasa,' Mr. Reddy said explaining his efforts. Regarding the employee benefits, he said terminal benefits, PRC arrears, and outstanding dues were cleared for teaching and non-teaching staff. 'I have also prioritised faculty and staff welfare, issuing CAS notifications and processing compassionate appointments for eligible candidates. The university has also been recognised for its excellence, with Kakatiya University being conferred with the 'Best Government University – Pharmacy' award by a media organisation,' the VC said. In terms of research and innovation, two patents were registered in the Departments of Zoology and Pharmacy. Faculty members from the Pharmacy and Economics Departments have contributed new academic publications and books, he said. Meanwhile, the university is set to host several notable events, including the 23rd Convocation scheduled for July 7 and the Telangana Science Congress. 'Nearly 1,000 delegates are expected to participate in the Science Congress, which is scheduled from August 19 to 21,' he said. Controller of Examinations, Prof Rajender Katla and several senior faculty members were present at the press meet.
