125-kg man with advanced bone damage undergoes hip replacement surgery in Delhi

New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) A 58-year-old man weighing 125 kilograms and battling severe right hip pain for over three years due to a condition known as Avascular Necrosis has successfully undergone a complex Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgery.
The surgery, which lasted around 50 minutes, involved treating a patient with high body weight. The procedure was performed at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Okhla Road, by a team led by Dr Kaushal Kant Mishra, director of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, according to a statement issued by the hospital.
Diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis — a condition where bone tissue dies due to reduced blood supply — the patient had previously undergone core decompression surgery at a different city hospital in 2022.
However, the relief was temporary. He continued to suffer from intense pain, limited mobility and growing dependence on painkillers, the statement said.
'When he came to us, the pain had significantly impacted his mobility and quality of life. Diagnostic tests revealed an advanced stage of the disease. A total hip arthroplasty was deemed necessary," said Dr Mishra.
The statement said the patient was allowed to bear full weight from the day after surgery and began walking soon after. His recovery showed promising signs, with his weight decreasing to 123.3 kg in the first week and further to 119.2 kg by the third week post-surgery, it added.
Overweight patients — particularly those weighing over 100 kg — often hesitate to consider joint replacement. Even surgeons approach such cases with caution due to increased risks of infection, dislocation and surgical complications, Dr Mishra added.
Facility director Dr Vikram Aggarwal said the case was especially challenging due to the patient's weight.

City docs replace heart valve via electrosurgery in woman
Jaipur: For the first time in India, doctors at Jaipur's Rajasthan Hospital (RHL) have successfully performed the country's first electrosurgical valve-in-valve mitral procedure, officials said Wednesday. The patient, a 74-year-old woman from Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar, had earlier undergone open-heart surgery for dual valve replacement and was facing heart failure again due to a malfunctioning mitral valve. The mitral valve is one of four valves in the heart and is located between the heart's upper left (left atrium) and lower left chamber (left ventricle). It directs blood from left atrium to left ventricle. According to officials, the doctors in Srinagar and Delhi ruled out conventional surgery due to her age and fragile health condition. Subsequently, the family approached the private hospital in Jaipur for treatment, where the surgery was performed. Dr Ravindra Singh Rao, chairman of RHL Heart Centre, and his team operated on her using an advanced electrosurgical technique. "Using a minimally invasive catheter-based approach, the team employed precision electrosurgical tools, including a fine electrified wire, to precisely open part of the malfunctioning mitral valve and implant a new one, all without opening the chest," Dr Rao said in a release. Fortis Healthcare Q1 net profit jumps 57 pc to Rs 260 cr
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Fortis Healthcare on Wednesday posted a 57 per cent increase in profit after tax at Rs 260 crore in the June quarter of FY26. The healthcare provider reported a profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 166 crore in the April-June quarter of last fiscal. Revenue increased to Rs 2,167 crore during the period under review as compared to Rs 1,859 crore in the year-ago quarter, Fortis Healthcare said in a statement. 'We have witnessed a healthy start to the financial year, as demonstrated in our Q1 earnings for both hospital and diagnostic businesses," Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, MD and CEO, Fortis Healthcare, stated. The recently executed O&M (operation & management) services agreement with Gleneagles India expands company's geographic footprint and provides an opportunity to leverage combined strengths to optimize operations and enhance efficiencies, he added.
