Epstein partner Ghislaine Maxwell's grand jury records to remain sealed
NEW YORK (Reuters) -A U.S. judge denied on Monday the Justice Department's bid to unseal records from the grand jury that indicted the late financier Jeffrey Epstein's partner Ghislaine Maxwell on sex trafficking charges, writing that the records did not answer lingering questions from the public about their crimes or Epstein's death.
Manhattan-based U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer, who reviewed the transcripts of the witness testimony heard by the grand jury and other evidence the panel saw, wrote that the government's assertion that the materials would reveal meaningful new information about Epstein's and Maxwell's crimes was "demonstrably false."
"A member of the public familiar with the Maxwell trial record who reviewed the grand jury materials that the Government proposes to unseal would thus learn next to nothing new," Engelmayer wrote.
"Insofar as the motion to unseal implies that the grand jury materials are an untapped mine load of undisclosed information about Epstein or Maxwell or confederates, they are definitely not that," the judge wrote.
Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence after her 2021 conviction on sex-trafficking charges. Epstein died by suicide in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. He had pleaded not guilty.
Neither the Justice Department nor a lawyer for Maxwell immediately responded to requests for comment.
President Donald Trump last month instructed Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the release of the Epstein and Maxwell grand jury material, as he sought to quell discontent from his base of conservative supporters and congressional Democrats over his administration's handling of documents from the cases.
Trump, a Republican, had promised to make public Epstein-related files if reelected and accused Democrats of covering up the truth. But in July, the Justice Department said a previously touted Epstein client list did not exist, angering Trump's supporters.

The threat comes as Texas state Democrats have fled their home state to Democratic strongholds such as Illinois and other states to prevent Republicans from passing controversial redistricting maps that give the GOP five more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Critics have accused Abbott and Texas Republicans of conducting a power grab, seeking to redraw districts now as opposed to at the end of the decade, when it is traditionally done, in order to try to give President Donald Trump and the Republican Party an additional five seats in the House ahead of next year's midterms. Texas Democrats fled the state earlier this month in opposition, denying their Republican colleagues a quorum, meaning the minimum number of lawmakers necessary to pass legislation. The GOP's redistricting efforts in Texas have angered Democrats throughout the country, with Gov. Gavin Newsom responding that he will redraw California's maps to produce five more Democratic seats in the House to neutralize Abbott's move. Texas has 25 Republicans and 12 Democrats in the House of Representatives. California has nine GOP legislators and 43 Democrats.

Fact check: Sweden is not deporting immigrants for 'not adhering to Western values'
In a series of online posts, internet users have claimed that Sweden is "seeking to deport immigrants who have acquired Swedish citizenship" for having allegedly failed to "integrate into Western society." These posts have been doing the rounds on social media for months, with one shared in December amassing more than 4 million views. However, the claim is misleading and does not fully align with the Swedish government's position. What is Swedish government's stance on migration? The Swedish government — composed of a centre-right coalition, propped up by the far-right Swedish Democrats (ECR) — has made cracking down on migration one of its key goals. Although Sweden has been looking into changing its constitution to allow authorities to remove citizenship from dual nationals, this measure would target individuals who obtain their passports fraudulently or those who commit crimes which are considered a threat to national security. As it stands, a vote is set to take place on the proposal in Sweden's parliament next year. The Swedish government has also backed a plan to introduce a compulsory course on knowledge of Swedish society and culture in citizenship tests. According to Swedish officials, the test's aim would be to exclude immigrants who are not integrated into Western society from obtaining citizenship. Stockholm has also been developing financial repatriation incentives for individuals on a voluntary basis, as Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told Euronews earlier this year. "If people who have the legal right to stay in Sweden but basically do not integrate, basically do not appreciate the Swedish way of life, at least people would think about returning to their country of origin," Kristersson said in a May interview. As part of this plan, Sweden wants to increase the amount of money offered to migrants as a financial incentive to leave the country from €900 to €32,000 from 1 January. However this does not amount to forced deportations on grounds of not adhering to Western values, as social media users have suggested. The Nordic nation began revamping its asylum policy in 2015, moving to a much stricter stance on application processing. This policy shift came after Sweden hosted record numbers of asylum seekers in 2015 — more than 160,000 people — from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. The government's policies have sparked criticism from migration organisations, who argue that they increase the risk of migrants facing discrimination, of heightening social tensions, as well as making integration more difficult for migrants.

Mark Cuban is lauding Trump for how the POTUS has handled China and Nvidia
Mark Cuban said on Monday that it's a good move to have Nvidia and AMD pay the US government 15% of their China chip sales revenues. "This is a 'billionaire's tax' structured as a royalty or sales tax on semiconductors from the most valuable company in the world, sold to China," Cuban wrote on X, after the Financial Times first reported that President Donald Trump had imposed the requirement on the two chipmakers. Cuban — who spent the 2024 election campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris — said Trump deserves praise if the government does get a cut from Nvidia and AMD's China chip sales. "Everyone knows how I feel about POTUS, but he doesn't get everything wrong," Cuban said on Monday, referencing his past criticisms of Trump's tariff policies. "Will this make up for the explosion of the deficits we face? Not as it stands now. Not close. But give him credit for knowing how those CEOs approach problems and opportunities, and using his leverage to generate tax revenues," Cuban added. Cuban and the White House did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. "POTUS is more progressive when it comes to taxation than anyone in the progressive wing of the Dems has ever been. The Dems should be celebrating just how progressive it is. The irony," Cuban wrote on X. Cuban said on Monday that progressive Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Sen. Cuban added. Representatives for Ocasio-Cortez, Sanders, and Warren did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. Last month, Nvidia said it would start selling its H20 chips in China again. The H20 chip is a China-specific product that was designed to be less advanced than Nvidia's other offerings. AMD made a similar announcement as well. In April, Nvidia said the Trump administration wanted them to apply for special licenses to sell their chips to China. Nvidia said those restrictions would have resulted in a $5.5 billion charge. In July, David Sacks, the White House's AI and crypto czar, said the administration's volte-face targeted Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant. Letting Nvidia sell a "deprecated, less capable chip" to the Chinese will "deprive Huawei of basically having this giant market share in China," Sacks told Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow.
