Oil pauses rally as markets weigh Trump's ultimatum to Russia

Ammon4 days ago
Ammon News - Oil prices took a breather in Asian trade on Wednesday after the previous session's spike of more than 3%, as investors awaited developments from U.S. President Donald Trump's tighter deadline for Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
Most active Brent crude futures rose 8 cents, or 0.12%, to $71.81 a barrel by 0419 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 8 cents, or 0.12%, to $69.29 a barrel.
The Brent crude September contract expiring on Wednesday was up 18 cents at $72.69 per barrel.
Both contracts had settled on Tuesday at their highest since June 20.
On Tuesday, Trump said he would start imposing measures on Russia, such as secondary tariffs of 100% on trading partners, if it did not make progress on ending the war within 10 to 12 days, moving up from an earlier 50-day deadline.
On Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund raised global growth forecasts slightly for 2025 and 2026, but warned the world economy faced major risks, such as a rebound in tariff rates, geopolitical tension and larger fiscal deficits. Reuters

Google backtracks on plans to deactivate shortened goo.gl links

Ammon News - Google is largely reversing course on its plans to discontinue support for all shortened URLs on August 25th. URLS that already show a message saying that they will be deactivated in August will still stop working — the company started showing the deactivation message nine months ago on URLs that 'showed no activity in late 2024' — but otherwise, 'all other links will be preserved and will continue to function as normal,' Google announced on Friday. Google, which stopped letting users make URLs in 2019, initially announced the August 25th deactivation deadline in July 2024. At that time, the company said that existing URLs saw 'less and less traffic as the years went on' and that more than 99 percent of the URLs 'had no activity in the last month.' But in its Friday post, Google said that 'we understand these links are embedded in countless documents, videos, posts and more, and we appreciate the input received.' TechCrunch

Only $3 million reached Gaza despite Trump's $60 million claim: Sources

The Washington Post reported that the total humanitarian aid delivered by the United States to the Gaza Strip in recent weeks amounts to just USD 3 million, far less than the USD 60 million figure repeatedly cited by President Donald Trump. In a report published Saturday evening, the paper said US assistance to Gaza falls significantly short of what Trump claimed during several public appearances over the past week. Citing regional sources and official statements from the US State Department, the report confirmed that only USD 3 million has been transferred so far to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a food aid operation overseen by the US and "Israel". Trump's repeated assertion, 'We sent USD60 million in food aid to Gaza', is inaccurate, according to the report. The State Department has twice clarified that just USD 30 million was allocated, and only 10 percent of that amount, USD 3 million, had been disbursed as of Friday. Throughout last week, Trump criticized the media for not acknowledging what he described as his administration's generosity, saying, 'We gave USD 60 million, and nobody thanked us.' The foundation, backed by Washington and Tel Aviv, is facing growing international criticism amid a mounting death toll from hunger and crowding near aid distribution points. Many countries are now calling for GHF to be shut down and replaced with UN-led distribution efforts. On Saturday, Gaza's Ministry of Health said that since May 27, at least 1,422 Palestinians have been killed and more than 10,000 injured while waiting for food aid.
