5 Eagles players returning from injury heading into training camp

With training camp set to begin, we're previewing the Eagles returning from injuries that occurred last season.
Philadelphia rookies and veterans will report for training camp on July 22, and a loaded roster will look to repeat as Super Bowl champions, while taking every opponent's best shot. Howie Roseman has retooled both sides of the football, and a defense that saw seven starters depart could be just as dominant, depending on several roster competitions.
With training camp set to begin, we're previewing the Eagles returning from injuries that occurred last season.
FB/LB Ben VanSumeren
VanSumeren had carved out a role as the Eagles' fullback, reserve linebacker, and special-teams standout. Still, his season ended prematurely last year after the second-year sensation suffered a knee injury during a Friday practice. VanSumeren did not play a single snap on defense last season; he has carved out a role as a fullback on the offensive side of the ball. He's also a major special-teams contributor, having played 12 offensive snaps last season and 153 on special teams.
LB Nakobe Dean
Dean suffered a torn left patellar tendon in the Eagles' wild-card win over the Packers, but has been rehabbing without a knee brace. While some wonder if he'll be available in 2025, the former Georgia All-American could be ahead of schedule.
According to NBC 10, Dean has invested his time in Ballet movements, which have helped his flexibility. Depending on the extent of the injury, reports suggest it could take nine months to start running and 12 months for sports," Dr. Dinesh Dhanaraj, the chief of orthopedic surgery at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, told the Philly Voice in January. A former third-round pick, Dean was elite in his first full season as a starter, finishing second on the team in tackles (128) while also producing three sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
DT Byron Young
Young was claimed off waivers from the Raiders at the end of the preseason last season and spent the first six games of the season as a reserve before landing on Injured Reserve with a hamstring injury.
LB Jihaad Campbell (2025 first-round pick)
The Eagles saw a player they liked and gave up pick 164 (5th round) to move up one spot in a trade with the Chiefs to land Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell with pick No. 31.
The New Jersey native slipped in the draft after suffering an injury, but lands with the defending Super Bowl champions, and legendary defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio.
RB AJ Dillon
The Eagles added a physical running back to the roster, agreeing to a one-year deal with the former Packers stud. Dillon and Aaron Jones teamed up in Green Bay for a dynamic one-two punch, and that could happen in Philadelphia with the Eagles looking to take some of the load off of Saquon Barkley following a season in which he led the league with 2,0005 yards.
Last summer, Dillon was set to enter a contract year in 2024, but he was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury and missed the entire season. Dillon was selected 62nd overall (second round) in the 2020 NFL Draft. The six-foot, 247-pound back, known as "Quadzilla" by Packers fans, has been cleared for action.

Eagles DC Vic Fangio is effusive in praise of Jihaad Campbell

Eagles' defensive coordinator says Jihaad Campbell continues to improve and makes good strides Zack Baun was initially signed by Philadelphia last off-season to add pass rush prowess and versatility to the Eagles' defense. Baun went on to become a Defensive Player of the Year finalist. The Eagles selected Jihaad Campbell in the draft, and on Saturday, the former Alabama star confirmed that he has been working out at both inside linebacker positions. After initially missing the bulk of the off-season workouts, Campbell has hit the ground running, drawing rave reviews from experts and analysts. Following a recent practice, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio held his second press conference of training camp and provided eight answers on several pertinent topics involving the Eagles' defense and the competition at several key positions. Fangio discusses what he wants to see from the cornerback position and highlights the development of rookie first-round pick Jihaad Campbell. He's taking 'small steps.' "I do see him making small strides every day. Again, it may not be noticeable to the average eye, but he's making good strides and if he can keep making those strides, I think he'll be what we had hoped he would be." Campbell learning Baun's spot could provide Philadelphia with a scenario where Nakobe Dean or Jeremiah Trotter Jr. plays the other linebacker spot alongside Campbell, allowing Baun to rush the passer more in 2025. The Erial, New Jersey native was named to the first-team All-SEC in 2024 after leading the team with 117 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks. Baun led the top-ranked total defense with 151 tackles and five forced fumbles in 2024. He also added one interception. He was one of two players since at least 2000 with 150-plus tackles and five-plus forced fumbles in a season (the Colts' Zaire Franklin also did so in 2024).

Reigning champion Clemson is again the ACC preseason football favorite, ahead of Miami and SMU

Associated Press Clemson is the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic Coast Conference ahead of Miami and SMU, while North Carolina is picked to finish eighth in its first season under NFL coaching great Bill Belichick. The league released its preseason poll Wednesday among media members who attended last week's preseason football media days in Charlotte, North Carolina. The reigning champion Tigers earned 167 of 183 possible first-place votes as the runaway choice to win the league for the 10th time under Dabo Swinney, a run that includes eight of the last 10 going back to the 2015 season. 'We've been around a lot of good teams, and this team has the ingredients to be a really good team, but we've got to go do the work," Swinney said last week at the ACC Kickoff event. 'We can't talk about it or predict our way into it. Y'all can't predict our way into it. We've got to go do it and do the work.' The Hurricanes were picked second and earned seven first-place votes, coming as they look to Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck to fill the job vacated by No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Cam Ward. The Mustangs were third after reaching last year's ACC title game in their first season in the conference amid the league's westward expansion, and is coming off consecutive 11-win seasons under Rhett Lashlee. As for the Tar Heels, Belichick is a first-time college coach who led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles. The Tar Heels have overhauled their roster in a bid to reshape and elevate their program, though it's unclear exactly how well it will work — landing them in the middle of the 17-team league. Georgia Tech was picked fourth, followed by Louisville, Duke and Florida State — last year's preseason favorite that won only two games in a stunning flop. Pittsburgh was ninth, followed by N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Boston College and Virginia. California was 15th, followed by the two other league schools breaking in new head coaches: Wake Forest with Jake Dickert, and Stanford with former NFL head coach Frank Reich working under an interim tag. The league is scheduled to release it preseason all-ACC honors Thursday. ___ AP college football: and recommended Item 1 of 3
