Disquiet continues at Kerala University as V-C dissolves meeting over Registrar's presence
The online meeting was convened to discuss the utilisation of ₹100 crore allocation under the Centre's PM-USHA scheme.
While the meeting was originally intended to be attended by members of the Board of Governors constituted for project implementation, the presence of others including Dr. Kumar and Syndicate members J.S. Shijukhan and R. Rajesh angered the Vice-Chancellor. While they refused to exit the virtual meeting on being asked, Dr. Kunnummal called off the proceedings.
Sources said a heated argument broke out between the Vice-Chancellor and the Syndicate members, causing further disruption.
Following the incident, the Vice-Chancellor issued a directive stating that the Syndicate hall be opened only during official committee meetings. He barred 'unauthorised entry' into the room by Syndicate members. He also instructed the staff to lock and secure the hall.
Earlier, Left-backed Syndicate members reportedly engaged in an argument with a section of employees after the former summoned a few staff to the Syndicate room, questioning their compliance with the Vice-Chancellor's directive to restrict digital file access for the Registrar.
This prompted the members of the Congress-backed university staff union to enter the Syndicate room in protest. They also alleged that the Syndicate members used inappropriate language towards the staff.

Odisha announces 21 NACs to boost infrastructure and services under urbanisation
The Mohan Majhi Government on Friday (August 15, 2025) announced the creation of 21 new Notified Area Councils (NACs) to boost infrastructure and services in line with Odisha's urbanisation needs. 'Better infrastructure and urbanisation are key components of development. Only 17% of our population lives in urban areas. Considering the State's rapid growth and people's aspirations, our government has decided to establish 21 more NACs,' Chief Minister Mohan Majhi declared during the Independence Day celebrations here. The creation of NACs was a major campaign plank ahead of the 2024 elections. The previous Naveen Patnaik Government had promised to set up NACs and municipalities to woo semi-urban voters, but the names were never announced. The Majhi Government also unveiled a welfare measure under which every family covered by the Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana will receive an additional 5 kg of rice per month for the next three months, benefiting 27 lakh families. After unfurling the Tricolour, Mr. Majhi dwelt at length on women's empowerment and safety — an issue on which the Opposition parties had been sharply critical. 'I have said on various platforms that the government follows a policy of zero tolerance towards crimes against women. Anyone committing violence against women — no matter how powerful or influential — belongs behind bars, not in civilised society,' he asserted. The CM, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the police had been given full authority to take necessary action. 'I have issued clear instructions that any neglect of women's safety will invite strict legal action. While law and order is generally under control, it must become more effective and robust,' he said. The State Government has recently faced criticism following a spate of incidents — including four girls committing self-immolation and several cases of gang rape and sexual assault — with both the Congress and Biju Janata Dal attacking its handling of women's safety.

BJP wraps Dharmasthala case in faith narrative, Congress battles perception war
Bengaluru: What began as an investigation into allegations of mass burials at Dharmasthala — one of the country's most prominent Hindu pilgrimage centres — has evolved into a politically charged contest over faith, identity, and control of the narrative. The special investigation team (SIT), tasked with examining claims that hundreds of bodies were secretly buried, has so far produced limited physical evidence. Yet in the political arena, the case is being reframed as an attack on Hinduism, with BJP signalling it could be a major campaign plank in the run-up to the 2028 assembly polls — a prospect which troubles governing Congress. ‘Old rhetoric': Opposition hits back at Modi's I-Day speech

'The ruling party has filled the constitutional institutions with people of its ideology instead of merit. Whenever they wanted, they appointed anyone, and whenever they wanted, they took their resignation,' he said in his address. Kharge invoked the history of India's freedom movement and said the story of the freedom struggle is 'the story of our party'. Attacking the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the BJP over the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, Kharge quoted BR Ambedkar, saying 'Franchise is one of the most fundamental things in a democracy. No person who is entitled to be brought into the electoral rolls… should be excluded merely as a result of prejudice…' 'But now the ruling party is ready to go to the extent of immorality to remain in power. In response to my question in Parliament, the government admitted - less than 10,000 internships. The stipend so low that 90% of youth refused it,' Gandhi said. 'Modi ji has no new ideas left. From this government, the youth will get not jobs, but only rhetoric.' Meanwhile, other Opposition leaders reacted sharply to PM Modi's reference to RSS in his Independence Day speech. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav said, 'They should remember their very first session, they should remember that it is the seculars and socialists that will lead the way forward. The BJP itself had resolved to follow the path of secularism. The RSS' ideology does not align with secularism.' Similarly, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called the RSS reference as the 'most troubling element' of the PM's speech. 'A blatant breach of the spirit of a constitutional, secular republic. It is nothing but a desperate attempt to appease the organisation in the run-up to his 75th birthday next month. Decisively weakened after the events of June 4th, 2024, he is now at their complete mercy and reliant on Mohan Bhagwat's good offices for the extension of his tenure post-September.'
