
Asia-US sea freight rates set to extend declines amid tariff chaos
Average spot rates for containers from Asia to the U.S. west and east coasts have slumped by 58% and 46%, respectively, since June 1 and are expected to fall further, according to shipping analytics firm Xeneta.
Adding to uncertainty are unresolved trade talks between the U.S. and China. Officials from the world's top two economies last week agreed to seek an extension of their 90-day tariff truce. The China-U.S. trade lane remains one of the most profitable for container ship operators.
Sea freight saw a brief uptick in late May and early June as shippers took advantage of a 90-day pause in U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, but rates quickly fell as capacity outweighed demand, Xeneta data showed.
"There is significant overcapacity globally and this will continue to shape the market," said Erik Devetak, Xeneta's chief technology and data officer.
"China-to-U.S. trade is dampened and the EU economy is not exactly hot, so blanked sailings and cancellations will become a recurring theme as carriers desperately try to keep freight rates up," Devetek said.
Blanked sailing refers to cancelled port calls or voyages.
Logistics major DHL noted that spot rates, which rose in the early summer surge of traffic from Asia to North America, have since reversed.
"Carriers rushed to add capacity on the transpacific to chase early gains, but oversupply is becoming apparent as the momentum fades," said Niki Frank, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding Asia Pacific.
Jarl Milford, maritime analyst at Veson Nautical, expects rates to decline steadily in the second half when more vessels are expected to enter the market.
"Ongoing uncertainty, including tariff policy and slowing global demand, adds continued pressure," Milford said.
Ocean Network Express, a joint venture between Japan's Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (9107.T), opens new tab, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (9104.T), opens new tab and Nippon Yusen (9101.T), opens new tab, said last week that "recent trade uncertainties further complicate visibility for the latter half of the fiscal year".
A key factor helping absorb some of the excess capacity, however, is the rerouting of vessels from traditional sailings.
Carriers are diverting from the Red Sea following attacks by Yemeni Houthis, and some are bypassing U.S. ports to avoid tariffs. These longer voyages are soaking up more ships and helping provide a floor for rates, analysts said.
"These diversions continue to soak up in excess of 10% of containership supply, leading capacity utilization to a healthy level in the 86-87% range," analysts at Jefferies Research wrote, referring to the Red Sea.
And while China's exports to the U.S. have fallen, shipments elsewhere have climbed.
Jefferies analysts said spot bookings to the U.S. in recent weeks suggest July volumes are likely to be down, pushing transpacific freight rates to their lowest this year, but rates to markets such as Europe and Latin America remain elevated.

InterContinental Hotels has rooms to grow as profits rise
The owner of the Holiday Inn chain of hotels has reported a jump in profits as its portfolio surpassed one million rooms for the first time. InterContinental Hotels Group has announced a record number of openings in the first half of its financial year, with more than 31,000 room openings worldwide across its various brands, which also include Crowne Plaza, Six Senses and Candlewood Suites. The FTSE 100 company reported revenues rose by 8 per cent to $2.52 billion for the six months ended June 30, with profit before tax rising 34.1 per cent to $633 million from $472 million. Its shares were up by 586p, or 6.8 per cent, to £92.66 on the back of the announcement. The hotel group said its global revenue per available room — or revpar, a key industry metric — was up 1.8 per cent over the half-year. The group reported that revpar rose by 1.4 per cent in the Americas, with a increase of 4.1 per cent across Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa. In China, revpar fell 3.2 per cent, which it attributed to a slowdown in the Chinese economy. Yet, Elie Maalouf, chief executive, said the issues in the Chinese market may have 'bottomed out' and were on course for improvement. The hotel group said it faced some 'shorter-term challenges' from geopolitical and economic upheaval, but that 'stable employment markets and robust levels of business activity' would support longer-term growth. Maalouf said: 'Earlier in the year, there was a lot of noise, uncertainty and tension around trade, and the effect that had on financial markets, and the effect that had on confidence. We think that led to a pause in people's decisions about various things including travel. We said in May we thought those things were clearing and that we were past the peak of that uncertainty. 'Trade tensions have turned into trade deals and you've seen financial markets recover back to a record level in the US and many parts of Europe. We think the climate is constructive going forward.' IHG was formed from a demerger of what is now the Mitchells & Butlers pub business in 2003. The group operates a portfolio of 20 brands and is present in more than 100 markets. Analysts at Peel Hunt said the group was 'strong where it counts' and had delivered 'excellent margin progression'. They said: 'Management says that IHG is on track to meet full-year consensus profit and earnings expectations which is, we believe, consistent with pressure on revenue being offset by a strong margin performance. 'Macroeconomic issues in the US continue to be a concern for us and will, in our view, weigh on the share price. However, we believe IHG is demonstrating that payback on years of strategic development can offset macroeconomic headwinds.'

US expects $50 billion a month in tariff revenues, US Commerce chief Lutnick says
WASHINGTON, Aug 7 (Reuters) - U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Thursday he expects the country to collect $50 billion a month in tariff revenues or more - up from $30 billion last month - as higher levies on imports from dozens of countries kick in. "And then you're going to get the semiconductors, you're going to get pharmaceuticals, you're going to get all sorts of additional tariff money coming in," Lutnick said in an interview with Fox Business Network. U.S. President Donald Trump's higher tariffs on imports from dozens of countries took effect on Thursday, raising the average U.S. import duty to its highest in a century, with countries facing tariffs of 10% to 50%. Trump on Wednesday also announced plans to levy a tariff of about 100% on imported semiconductor chips unless manufacturers commit to produce in America, as well as a small tariff on pharmaceutical imports that would rise to 250% over time. Details of those sectoral tariffs are expected in coming weeks after the Commerce Department completes investigations into the impact of those imports on U.S. national security. Lutnick told Fox Business Network that companies could win exemptions from the expected semiconductor tariff if they filed plans to build plants in the United States, and those plans were overseen by an auditor. "His objective is to get semiconductor manufacturing done here," he said, predicting that the initiative would result in some $1 trillion in investment to bolster domestic manufacturing. Other exemptions have already been agreed, including with the European Union, which said its agreement to accept a 15% tariff on most EU exports includes chips, and with Japan, which has said the United States agreed not to give it a worse rate than other countries. The push to boost domestic chip manufacturing is not new. Congress created a $52.7 billion semiconductor manufacturing and research subsidy program in 2022 under former President Joe Biden, and all five leading-edge semiconductor firms agreed last year to locate chip factories in the U.S. Last year the department said the U.S. produced about 12% of semiconductor chips globally, down from 40% in 1990. Lutnick, asked about separate talks underway with China on extending a tariff truce that is due to end on August 12, said he felt an agreement was possible. "I think we're going to leave that to the trade team and to the president to make those decisions, but it feels likely that they're going to come to an agreement and extend that for another 90 days, but I'll leave it to that team."
