Maharaj five-for leads S.Africa to biggest ODI victory over Oz in series opener

Gulf Today2 days ago
Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj dismantled Australia with a career-best 5-33 as South Africa romped to a 98-run victory in the first one-day international on Tuesday.
Maharaj made full use of spin-friendly conditions to help dismiss Australia for 198 with more than nine overs to spare after South Africa had earlier posted 296-8 -- the highest ODI total at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns.
Australia captain Mitchell Marsh made 88 off 96 balls and Ben Dwarshuis scored 33, but Maharaj had done enough damage in his unchanged spell of 10 overs to give the Proteas a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Travis Head (27) gave Australia an explosive start of 60-0 in the first seven overs when the left-hander smashed fast bowler Nandre Burger for five boundaries in one over.
But in a dramatic turnaround, the home team lost six wickets - five to Maharaj - for the addition of only 29 runs as Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma turned to his slow bowlers inside the batting power play. Australia went from 60-0 to 89-6.
Debutant off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen (1-46) had Head stumped off his seventh ball in ODIs before Maharaj removed five batters for single digits.
Maharaj had Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey trapped leg before wicket while Cameron Green, Josh Inglis and Aaron Hardie were clean bowled off deliveries that spun enough to beat the bat.
Marsh and Dwarshuis resisted with a 71-run stand but Lungi Ngidi (2-28) and Burger (2-54) wrapped up the tail quickly after Maharaj and Subrayen's impeccable spells.
After losing the toss, three half centuries from the top four batters powered South Africa on a wicket where spinners ruled with part-time offspinner Head claiming 4-57, his second four-wicket haul in ODIs.
Aiden Markram (82), Bavuma (65) and Matthew Breetzke (57) all scored 50-plus before Australia came back strongly in the death overs with Head claiming three of his four wickets in the last 10 overs.
Ryan Rickelton (33) survived a number of close calls, including a dropped catch by wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, as he put on a 92-run opening wicket stand with Markram. Rickelton's luck ended when he holed out to Labuschagne at mid off that gave Head his first wicket.
Markram looked set for his first century in the last 20 ODIs, but the right-hander played a loose drive against Dwarshuis and was caught behind in the 24th over.
Bavuma, playing his first international since leading South Africa to victory in the World Test Championship final, struggled to get going but Breetzke found boundaries against Australia's third spinner Labuschagne.
Breetzke raised his run-a-ball half century but just when it looked like South Africa would finish off well he top-edged a slog sweep against Adam Zampa to Hardie at deep square leg.
Head then got the big wickets of power-hitter Tristan Stubbs and debutant Dewald Brevis in the space of three balls. Brevis smashed the spinner for a first-ball six in his ODI career before perishing off the next ball when he couldn't clear Carey at long off.
Bavuma tried to pick up the pace but got an inside edge when he tried to lift Dwarshuis as the fast bowler ended up with 2-53.
Wiaan Mulder played a little cameo of 31 off 26 balls.
Pace bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of the ODI series with an ankle injury in a major setback for South Africa.

Australia all-rounder Green eyes Shield to warm up bowling arm before Ashes

All-rounder Cameron Green says he will be ready to return to bowling during the domestic Sheffield Shield in a boost for Australia before hosting England in the Ashes. Green has been restricted to batting since returning from a long layoff following back surgery but has been gradually building up his bowling load in training. Australia play India in a white-ball series in October and November but Green may opt for a block of red-ball cricket for Western Australia to ramp up his bowling before the Ashes. "In the past, it's worked really well when I've focused on Shield cricket," Green told reporters in Mackay on Thursday. "That potentially might be the way to go, especially with working my way back to bowling, to potentially get a few more overs over a few more days." Australia will be wary of over-bowling Green, who missed the entire home Test series against India after opting for surgery on a fracture in his lumbar spine. But if fit and firing he would be a huge asset in Australia's bid to retain the urn against England. Green has 18 wickets in eight matches against England at an average of 24.44, compared to a career average of 35.31. More recently, it has been his contributions with the bat that have proved valuable for Australia. His 184 runs on difficult pitches during the West Indies Test tour helped Pat Cummins's team whitewash the hosts 3-0. Green said he was not reading too much into his batting form in the Caribbean. "I don't think we'll be playing on many wickets quite like that (this summer), so I don't think there's too many takeaways," he said. "It was such a tough wicket, especially for the batters -- to .... get out of the series unscathed was a good effort." The first Ashes Test is in Perth from Nov. 21.

South Africa spinner Subrayen cited for suspect bowling action

South Africa spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspect bowling action in the first ODI against Australia, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said. The ICC said match officials reported concerns about the legality of the off-spinner's action during his ODI debut in Cairns on Tuesday where he took 1-46 in the Proteas' 98-run win. Subrayen must undergo an independent assessment of his action at an ICC-accredited testing facility within 14 days. He can continue bowling until the results of his test are known. Bowlers are permitted 15 degrees of elbow extension while delivering the ball. Reuters contacted Cricket South Africa for comment. The 31-year-old Subrayen has a record of bowling illegally in domestic and T20 cricket. He was suspended from bowling in domestic cricket in late-2015 after failing an assessment but was cleared to resume after another test a few months later. He was also suspended in late-2012 over his action but cleared to bowl again in early-2013 after remedial work. Subrayen made his test cricket debut last month against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, picking up four first-innings wickets.

Maharaj reacts to reclaiming top spot in ODI Bowler Rankings

Keshav Maharaj made a dream return to ODIs, dismantling Australia with a five-wicket haul in his first 50-over outing since the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025. As a result, Maharaj reclaimed the top spot in the ICC Men's ODI Bowlers Rankings, displacing Sri Lanka's Maheesh Theekshana. 'It's a special feeling, I think, to be ranked as the No.1 bowler in the world. You think about the years and years of hard work, and see it come together to be able to earn the title,' Maharaj told ICC Digital via Cricket South Africa . The left-arm spinner had previously topped the ODI Bowling Rankings during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. 'To get it [the no.1 spot] back is even more special. I haven't played ODI cricket in a while, so it's nice to get back on the park, and obviously help the team to get back to winning ways.' Maharaj's promotion came on the back of a career-best five-wicket haul against Australia in the first ODI in Cairns, in what was also his international comeback after a groin strain kept him out of cricket over the last few weeks. 'Really thoroughly enjoyed it,' Maharaj spoke about his performance. 'First game back after a long time, and to be able to put in a performance like that just keeps me grounded, keeps me hungry, and keeps me wanting more.' Other than Maharaj, the other Proteas cricketer in the news of late is the young Dewald Brevis, who was at his blazing best in the T20I series against Australia. The youngster was the leading run-getter in the T20I leg of the series, smashing 180 runs from three outings, at a strike-rate of 204.54, including a match-winning 125* from 56 balls in the second game. Dewald Brevis shines again | SA v IRE | ICC U19 Men's CWC 2022 Maharaj had high words of praise for the young talent, heralding his six-hitting as a rare gift. 'I think he's [Brevis] a super special talent. He's transitioned from his last T20I game, two years back, and [it's great] to see how he's come leaps and bounds. 'I know the hard work he's put in behind the scenes, and to come to fruition is super special. He's a great kid, a funny kid, and has the ability to clear the boundary at will, not many others are able to do so.' Maharaj wished the youngster luck and hoped that he had many more games to play. 'He's got a long journey ahead of him in international cricket, and for long may his good form continue.' South Africa lead the ODI series 1-0, with the second ODI to be played at Mackay tomorrow.
