Kal Penn recalls he had to stop showing up on Indian film set to get his due payment: 'I'm not coming until I get paid'

Actor Kal Penn has shared that once, while working on an Indian film, his payment was so delayed that he had to stop showing up on set to get it. Speaking with the Indian Express, Kal spoke in detail about the incident when he flew from the US to India and started working on the film "in good faith," even though the money wasn't there. He added that he was warned by fellow Bollywood actors that he might not get paid. Kal Penn talked about an unpleasant incident while working in an Indian film.
Kal Penn shares he stopped going to film's set to get his due payment
Kal shared that even though the filming was about to end, he didn't get his payment. "So with, like, three days left to go, I told everybody on set, 'I'm not coming tomorrow until I get paid.' And the crew was like, 'Yeah, finally. Good for you.' And the producers were like, 'Okay.' So that second-to-last day, there's a phone call: 'Sir, your car is ready.' And I said, 'No, actually, I'm not coming today. You can let the driver go. I haven't been paid.' Then, like ten minutes later, one of the financiers calls: 'Mr. Kalpen, koi problem hai (Is there a problem)?' I'm like, 'I just haven't been paid, so I can't come to work.' We had some strong words after that. He just goes, 'Okay, just wait in your room. In two hours' time, my boy will come.' I'm like, 'Okay',' he said.
How his move made producers pay him within a few days
He shared how he received the payment, all in cash, in "a brown paper bag" from a man. "He hands it to me and just goes, 'Count it.' I was like, 'Alright. Do you want to come in?' He goes, 'No.' So I closed the door, counted it, it was like half of what the guy owed me, in cash. The phone rings. I was like, 'Uh, actually, this is just half of what you owe me.' He goes, 'Yeah, the other half you'll receive tomorrow.' I'm like, 'Okay.' So I put the money in the safe, fully expecting it to, like, not be there when I came home from work, fully expecting somebody to steal my kidney when I got there,' he also said.
Kal added that he was four hours late to work, but the film's team was ready with the money the next day. He added that he returned to the US with the cash, declared it, and filled out forms.
About Kal's films
The actor has starred in several films over the years, such as Express: Aisle to Glory, American Desi, Van Wilder, Cosmopolitan, Dude, Where's the Party, Ball & Chain, Sueno, The Namesake, Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain, and The Ashram, among many others.

Dhadak 2 Box Office Collection Day 3: Triptii Dimri-Siddhant Chaturvedi's movie sees a dull opening weekend, earns...

Dhadak 2 Box Office Collection Day 3: Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri's starrer Dhadak 2 witnessed a dull opening weekend at the Indian box office. Son of Sardaar 2, released on the same day, August 1, emerged as a winner in terms of box office collection on the opening weekend compared to Dhadak 2. Dhadak 2 is a follow-up to the 2018 Dhadak. It is a remake of filmmaker Mari Selvaraj's 2018 Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Dhadak 2 fell short of expectations at the Indian box office. Opening at a meagre ₹ 3.5 crore, the movie saw an uptick in its overall performance over the weekend, but it wasn't enough to make it shine at the box office. On Sunday, Dhadak 2 saw an 11.20% increase in its earnings, minting ₹ 4.17 crore. On Saturday, the Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi movie earned ₹ 3.75 crore. This brings Dhadak 2's opening weekend collection to ₹ 11.42 crore. Meanwhile, Son of Sardaar 2, which received poorer reviews, earned ₹ 25.14 crore over the weekend. Dhadak 2 had an overall 33.15% Hindi occupancy on Sunday Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi NCR and Lucknow emerged as top contributors in terms of occupancy. IMDb describes Dhadak 2, directed by Shazia Iqbal, as 'A searing romantic drama about identity, power, and the cost of love in the world we live in.' The movie stars Saad Bilgrami, Manjiri Pupala, Richa, Vipin Sharma, Deeksha Joshi, Mayank Khanna, Aditya Thakare, Shantanu Pandey, Bala, Priyank Tiwari, Ashwant Lodhi and Amit Jaat in key roles. Hindustan Times said Dhadak 2 carries a powerful message but fumbles with its storytelling. 'It wants to speak about caste, oppression, and systemic injustice- and when it does, it hits the right notes. But it's weighed down by an uneven narrative and an overstretched runtime.' 'This could have been a hard-hitting social drama. Instead, it settles for moments of brilliance buried under a ton of missed opportunities,' they added.

Entertainment with empathy: The power of purpose-driven storytelling in Indian Cinema

By Siddharth P Malhotra In a country where cinema is more than just a medium, it's an emotion and stories have the power to shape how we think, feel, and engage with the world around us. While entertainment remains at the heart of Indian films, a new wave of storytelling is blending emotion with intention. Purpose driven narratives are emerging as a powerful force, proving that entertainment and empathy can go hand in hand and they leave a deeper, lasting impact. The Role of Cinema Beyond Entertainment Indian cinema has long been known for its grand narratives, colourful visuals, and deeply emotional stories. While its primary purpose remains entertainment, there's a growing shift towards storytelling that also carries a deeper meaning, stories that move the heart, but also awaken the mind. This evolving trend reflects the immense power of cinema not just to engage, but also to influence and inspire change. Not Just a Story, A Social Reflection A truly impactful film goes beyond the screen. It holds a mirror to society, sparking conversations around issues that are often overlooked. Whether it's blind faith, social injustice, or emotional resilience, films today are exploring themes that resonate with real-life challenges. When a character questions societal norms or speaks out against prejudice, it does more than build drama, it invites the audience to reflect and respond. Take, for instance Maharaj, a story that critiques blind faith, not in a preachy or academic way, but through powerful dialogue and engaging characters. When a character says, 'If we don't wake up as a society, the names of the gurus may change, but the stories will remain the same,' it hits a nerve. It's storytelling with a conscience. Finding Empathy in Entertainment Good storytelling taps into universal emotions while great storytelling does that and teaches empathy. For example, portraying a protagonist with a neurological condition, like Tourette's Syndrome in the film Hichki can do more than raise awareness about a medical issue. When the narrative is shaped to show that everyone has their own version of Tourette's, their own internal struggle or flaw, the story becomes universally relatable. It becomes a metaphor for overcoming life's challenges. Such stories remind viewers that imperfections are part of being human, and embracing them is a step toward personal growth and compassion. Storytelling on Humanitarian Grounds There are also narratives that go beyond individual experiences and touch upon broader humanitarian concerns, like the identity and rights of people across borders, or the impact of war and displacement. These aren't just stories, they are expressions of shared humanity. They urge viewers to think beyond politics and prejudice and look at the person behind the label. Films that explore such sensitive themes with care and authenticity leave a lasting mark. They challenge stereotypes, build empathy, and often lead to greater awareness, while keeping the audience emotionally invested. Message Without Preaching Purpose driven storytelling doesn't mean sacrificing entertainment. In fact, the most impactful films are often the ones that blend meaningful messages with engaging narratives. They don't shout from a podium. Instead, they put across their message through the story, letting the audience draw their own conclusions. Directors and writers who strike this balance by building entertainment layered with empathy, create stories that are more universal. The key lies in clarity of intent. Whether it's a love story or a drama, knowing why the story is being told gives It depth and purpose. Leaving a Mark That Matters In a world flooded with content, what makes a film stand out is its ability to connect, not just emotionally, but socially. Purpose driven storytelling allows filmmakers to leave behind more than just applause. It gives them a chance to contribute to a larger conversation, to influence thought, and perhaps, to shift perspective. In conclusion , if a story can entertain, move hearts, and nudge society in a better direction then it should be told that way. (The author is the director and producer, Alchemy Films.)
