Al-ahli Wins Its First Asian Champions League Title
JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia—Al-Ahli won its first AFC Champions League Elite title after beating Kawasaki Frontale of Japan 2–0 in the final on Saturday.
The star-studded Jeddah team, playing at home in front of 60,000 fans at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, deserved what was a comfortable victory and completed an unbeaten tournament.
First-half goals from Galeno and Franck Kessie put the two-time beaten finalist in control against the five-time Japanese champion.
The tournament quarterfinals, semifinals and final were staged in Jeddah and Al-Ahli rode a wave of support.
The hosts were on top early and made the breakthrough after 35 minutes. Roberto Firmino fed Galeno outside the area and the Brazilian winger, signed from Porto in January for around $55 million, sent a curling shot into the top corner.
Three minutes before the break, Firmino crossed from the right for Kessie, and the former AC Milan and Barcelona midfielder headed home from close range. Firmino won the tournament's Most Valuable Player award.

Kawasaki, which knocked out Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr in the semifinals to reach its first final, pressured after the restart but struggled to create clear chances against a team full of big-game experience.
Firmino, signed from Liverpool in 2023, is a past UEFA Champions League winner, as are his teammates Riyad Mahrez and Edouard Mendy, who lifted the trophy with Manchester City and Chelsea respectively.
Mahrez, with nine goals in the tournament, went close to adding a third late in the final, firing just wide.
The home fans were already celebrating.
'We are so proud. Once we knew that the final eight would be in Jeddah, it was our goal to be champions in front of our fans,' Al-Ahli goalkeeper Mendy said.
'Since I came here 18 months ago, they have supported us so much. As I said when I signed, it was to make history, to win trophies and to make this club as big as it was before.'
Al-Ahli is the third Saudi club to win the Champions League after Jeddah rival Al-Ittihad and Riyadh's Al-Hilal.

Leverkusen CEO addresses Xabi Alonso future amid Real Madrid links – ‘would have been happier if…'
Real Madrid's 3-0 defeat to Arsenal midweek has undoubtedly set off a domino reaction in Spanish media with several reports of departures doing the rounds suddenly. Players including Vinicius Jr, Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez have suddenly been linked with departures after the poor showing and it is clear that the board will take drastic decision if the team fails embarrasingly in the event. Advertisement The most affected, needless to say, is Carlo Ancelotti whose future is more uncertain now than ever before. The defeat to Arsenal, however, has seen reports of his sacking and Xabi Alonso's appointment exponentially amplify. Leverkusen CEO speaks Speaking to Sky Sports earlier today, Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro acknowledged the fact that Real Madrid's poor result midweek only fuelled the rumors of Alonso's appointment and joked that he wished the situation were otherwise. 'Alonso to Madrid? I'll be honest, I would have been happier if Real Madrid had decisively defeated Arsenal and the coaching position was assured,' said Carro. Real Madrid want Alonso to replace Ancelotti. (Photo by) Elaborating on the situation of the manager, he stated that it was normal for rumours to go berserk after a poor result and thus indirectly hinted to Alonso's situation not being drastically changed by the development. Advertisement 'It is normal in football that if a club like Real Madrid loses 3-0 in the quarterfinals against Arsenal, the rumours go crazy,' he noted. 'He still has a contract with us, he feels comfortable here. First of all, we assume and we are also planning the next season with him, preparation, games, squad,' he added. Elimination from the UEFA Champions League in such embarrassing fashion would undoubtedly see Ancelotti sacked and there is little doubt that Alonso is indeed the overwhelming favourite if such a situation unfolds. At Real Madrid, however, it is clear that it is never over until it is. The dressing room strongly believe in a comeback and have spoken openly about the same throughout the week. Should they pull off a comeback and even possibly go on to win the Champions League or La Liga, the manager's future at the club may become clear once more. Needless to say, nothing can be claimed with certainty at this stage in the season.

Calgary's Wild FC downs Halifax Tides 3-2 in Northern Super League
CALGARY - Calgary's Wild FC held off the Halifax Tides 3-2 on Thursday in the Northern Super League. Wild (3-2-2) scored three first-half goals before the winless Tides (0-5-1) countered with two late in the second. Calgary extended its undefeated run to four straight games with two wins and two draws in that span. Wild FC defeated the Tides 4-1 in Halifax on April 26 for Calgary's first NSL victory, and a week after the six-team NSL launched with the Vancouver Rise blanking Calgary 1-0. The Wild's Taegan Stewart scored her first career NSL goal when the 17-year-old Calgarian drilled a right-foot shot from the centre box home in first-half extra time. Jenaya Robertson of Delta, B.C., made it 2-0 for the hosts at McMahon Stadium with a left-footed strike in the 41st minute. Australian defender Ally Green got Calgary's first-half scoring burst underway in the 23rd minute. Wild goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec's bid for a third clean sheet in four games was foiled when Haligonian Saorla Miller and Japanese striker Megumi Nakamura scored in the 72nd and 76th minutes respectively for the Tides. Bukovec and Halifax keeper Erin McLeod, who has appeared in 119 games for the Canadian women's team, each made one save. Bukovec was the busier of the two women with 68 touches to McLeod's 36. Wild FC's next game is against AFC Toronto in Calgary on June 14. The Tides host Ottawa Rapid FC on June 10. Toronto versus Ottawa and Vancouver against Montreal Roses FC is Saturday's NSL match lineup. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 5, 2025.
