Celebrity Cruises faces issue; Royal Caribbean tightens key rule originally appeared on TravelHost.
After having cruises on two of its ships canceled or significantly disrupted by technical issues in July, Celebrity Cruises is seeing its string of bad luck continue into August.
A third Celebrity Cruises ship has now joined Celebrity Infinity and Celebrity Beyond in experiencing technical difficulties this summer.
The cruise line's troubles began in early July when a minor electrical fire on board Celebrity Infinity led to major problems. The ship experienced a power failure and technical issues afterward that forced it to cancel the rest of its port stops and stay docked in Kusadasi, Turkey for days as emergency repairs were completed.
Then, Celebrity Beyond, one of the cruise line's newest Edge Class ships, began experiencing propulsion problems that are now slowing down the rest of its summer cruise season in the Caribbean. Despite canceling a cruise in July so the ship could undergo emergency repair work, the cruise line had to adjust cruise itineraries through October to accommodate the ship's reduced sailing speed.
Now, another Celebrity Cruises ship sailing in the Mediterranean experienced a sudden setback that left many passengers concerned.
Doug Parker shared details on the latest Celebrity Cruises snag, and other cruise news, including how Royal Caribbean is tightening a key beverage package policy, on the Aug. 4 edition of Cruise News Today.Celebrity Constellation loses power while sailing in Italy
Cruise News Today Transcript:
This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker.
Good morning, here's your cruise news for Monday, August 4th.
Passengers aboard the Celebrity Constellation experienced a full power outage while the ship was sailing off the coast of southern Italy over the weekend.
Now, for about two hours, the ship had no air conditioning, no flushing toilets or hot meals. It drifted at a low speed before power was eventually restored and the ship resumed course up to Messina.A report to our tip line says guests were given a free drink and WiFi for the inconvenience. Celebrity Cruises has not commented at the time of broadcast and passengers described poor communication during the blackout.
The incident follows other technical issues across two other ships over the past month with Celebrity. In early July, Celebrity Infinity broke down in Turkey where it stayed for five days for repairs while closer to the states, Celebrity Beyond was out of service for a week due to propulsion issues, which are still ongoing.

Royal Caribbean stops making exceptions to drink package rule
And Royal Caribbean is tightening enforcement of its drink package policy. Yeah, now while the cruise line has long required all adults in the stateroom buy the Deluxe Beverage Package if one person does, it used to grant exceptions, especially for pregnancies or non-drinking guests. But as of August 1st, that flexibility is long gone.
According to Royal Caribbean Blog, a company spokesperson confirmed saying, quote: 'Royal Caribbean will no longer be able to grant exceptions to our policy.'
This move follows a rise in people asking for exemption requests and concerns about guests sharing drink packages.Norwegian Cruise Line cuts costs while upholding standards
And during a business update, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings says its 200 million dollars in cost savings this year and 300 million projected by next year won't impact the guest experience.
CEO Harry Sommer said that these savings are coming from smarter purchasing and operational efficiencies, not service cuts. He did add that some of the money is actually being reinvested, including upgrading food offerings across the company's 34 ships.
CFO Mark Kempa said that guest satisfaction remains strong and that NCL will continue tightening costs while maintaining its onboard standards.
Last week, Norwegian reported a total of 2.52 billion in revenue in Q2. That's up six percent from the same quarter last year. And cruise line stocks were down on Friday. Carnival Corporation: down 2.3%, 29.07. Royal Caribbean: down 1%, 314.25. Norwegian: down 4%, 24.50. And Viking: down 2%, 57.56.

Guest injured on Royal Caribbean cruise after piece of waterslide breaks off: ‘Stop the slide!'

(NEXSTAR) – A guest on Royal Caribbean 's Icon of the Seas is in stable condition after a hole appeared to open up in one of the ship's waterslides on Thursday. Footage of the broken waterslide has since been making the rounds on social media, showing water cascading to the ship's deck through a hole near the top of the slide. The injured guest, identified by Royal Caribbean as an adult, did not fall through the hole, according to a spokesperson for the cruise line. 'Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide. The guest is being treated for his injuries,' the spokesperson said. 'The water slide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation.' Royal Caribbean did not disclose the nature of the guest's injuries. Some of the videos shared to social media appeared to show the moment that passengers realized the slide had broken. Some can be heard screaming for the operators to 'stop the slide!' while other yell for anyone in the queue to turn back. Other videos, from after the incident, showed different angles of a jagged hole in a clear acrylic section of the slide. 'Okay we will always cruise Royal but this… this is bad. Especially for the ICON of the seas!' one woman, who appeared to be a passenger on the cruise, wrote on TikTok. 'Had just about convinced my husband to go on a slide with me too.' The Icon of the Seas is currently en route to Coco Cay, in the Bahamas, according to CruiseMapper. The ship had left Florida on Saturday for a 7-day voyage to the Caribbean.

Video shows water pouring out of cruise ship slide after glass shatters, injuring passenger

A passenger has been injured on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship after acrylic glass shattered on a water slide on Thursday. The passenger, an adult, was on board the Icon of the Seas, according to ABC News, CBS News and People Magazine. It departed from Miami on Aug. 2. A video posted on X on the evening of Aug. 7 shows water rushing out of the red and yellow slide where a glass panel appeared to be missing. People in the background were shouting as water gushed out of the slide down onto the deck. 'Did the person fall out?' an off-camera voice can be heard asking repeatedly. 'Yes, they did,' someone else replies. 'Oh my God, someone just fell out of the slide,' a person can be heard saying, moments later. People can be heard yelling: 'Stop the slide!' The adult guest is reportedly in stable condition, but the extent of the injuries are not known. 'Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide,' a Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson said in a statement to ABC News. 'The guest is being treated for his injuries.' The injured person has not been identified. Officials said the slide was closed 'for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation,' People Magazine reported. The massive ship was called the largest cruise ship in the world by The Guardian when it set sail last year. It can accommodate 7,000 guests and crew, per the publication. It is 365 metres in length. For comparison, the CN Tower stands at 553 metres tall. The ship has seven different pools, 20 decks above sea level, a rock-climbing wall, a waterpark, an ice skating rink, and 20 dining options. The waterpark has a total of six slides. According to Cruise Hive, the slide that broke was called the Frightening Bolt, which is 46 feet high. In unconfirmed reports, other passengers said that a person suffered from 'skin laceration injuries from his legs to his hands,' per Cruise Hive. The Icon of the Seas is scheduled to return to Miami on Saturday. Last month, a passenger fell over the glass railing of an infinity pool on the same ship. The man was not injured.
