Norwegian Cruise Line faces scary weather incident originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. Although the tropics were quiet as the Atlantic hurricane season kicked off on June 1, May 30 and 31 brought unusually high winds to multiple ports around the world where cruise ships were docked. Winds gusts in certain ports were so strong that large cruise ships struggled to remain tied up at their docks, creating rare dangerous situations for both passengers and crew from multiple cruise two of the three windy-weather related incidents even led to passenger injuries. In all cases, fast-acting crew members and port workers prevented the situation from becoming much worse though. Doug Parker shared more details on all three of the cruise ship accidents Mother Nature caused during the windy weekend, and other cruise news including Carnival Cruise Line's latest effort to enforce cruise rules, on the June 2 edition of Cruise News Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning. Here's your cruise news for Monday, June 2. A windy weekend — Yeah, high winds knocked a gangway into the water off Holland America's Westerdam on Friday while docked in Ketchikan, Alaska. Gusts around 69 miles an hour caused the ropes to snap and the ship detached from the pier. Tugboats though quickly came in and assisted the ship back to the pier now. No injuries were reported and a crane did lift the gangway out of the water. All passengers eventually re-boarded the Westerdam meanwhile in Sicily, strong winds caused a mooring bollard to give way sending a Norwegian Epic passenger into the water on Friday. The gangway collapsed as the ship started drifting away from the pier sending the woman into the bay. She was rescued by her husband and both were treated for minor injuries. The Norwegian Epic was delayed leaving port. Now closer to home, an MSC ship broke free from the dock during a squall at Ocean Cay that injured one guest as well. Busy Cruise Line is reinforcing its 'Have Fun. Be Safe' policy with updated reminders now in every stateroom fleetwide. Rules include a 1 a.m curfew for minors, noise restrictions, and a $500 fine for doing things like smoking or tossing items overboard. And all illegal substances are prohibited even if it's legal in port. Cruise industry files lawsuit against popular Royal Caribbean port
Cruise industry files lawsuit against popular Royal Caribbean port originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. As Royal Caribbean's popular Quantum Class cruise ship Anthem of the Seas embarks on its first-ever adventures in the Last Frontier this summer, a new battle is heating up between the cruise industry and one of its ports of call. A total of four Royal Caribbean ships are sailing in Alaska this summer, taking adventurous cruisers to explore sought-after ports like Sitka, Juneau, and of their popularity with cruise travelers, all three of these Alaska ports have been grappling with how to effectively manage cruise tourism to protect the environment and quality of life in their communities. Although Alaska ports have mostly been working collaboratively with cruise lines on measures to regulate cruise tourism and offset its impacts, one port recently adopted a controversial cruise ship ordinance, igniting a fight that will now be settled in court. Doug Parker shared details on the Alaska cruise port lawsuit, and other cruise news including significant cruise schedule changes made by Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, on the May 29th edition of Cruise News Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Thursday, May 29th. Carnival Cruise Line has canceled seven sailings aboard Carnival Conquest in January over a rescheduled dry dock. Now the impacted cruises — originally three and four-night Bahamas sailings from Miami — are now off the website and not open for booking. Impacted guests can rebook comparable sailings with price protection, onboard credits, and possible airfare reimbursement. Full refunds are also available. No reason was given for the dry dock shift, but the original dates are now offered as casino sailings. Similar dry dock changes have also recently impacted Carnival Magic and Carnival the cruise industry is suing the town of Skagway in southeast Alaska over a new tax ordinance. Yeah, the policy passed late last year allows Skagway to collect sales tax on full-price cruise excursions, including commissionable fees. The Cruise Line International Association argues that this violates state and federal law, calling it unfair. Skagway officials say it ensures consistent taxation for all tourists, regardless of how they're booked. The lawsuit filed in state court seeks to overturn the ordinance and recover legal Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas is arriving ahead of schedule again and adding another sailing. Yeah, the cruise line has announced a new four-night showcase cruise departing Port Canaveral on August 16th. This will be visiting CocoCay and offering two days at sea. This is the fourth preview sailing ahead of the ship's official seven-night Caribbean cruise on August 31st. Guests booked on later cruises can now join this cruise if they'd cruise line stocks were down on Wednesday. Carnival Corporation: down two and a half percent, 23.00, Royal Caribbean: down two percent, 250.80, Norwegian: down three percent, 17.54, and Viking: down 1.3 percent, 44.32. Man climbs Carnival cruise ship; cruiser injured during excursion
Man climbs Carnival cruise ship; cruiser injured during excursion originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. Although challenging yourself to reach new heights is encouraged on some cruise ships that feature rock climbing walls or ropes courses, attempting to scale the side of cruise ship docked in port is a very unwise decision. It's not only dangerous, but also a surefire way to get yourself man learned this the hard way recently as he channeled Spider-Man in an unauthorized cruise port stunt in Sydney, Australia's iconic Circular Quay. The incident shocked Carnival Adventure cruise passengers as well as crew and local authorities. Doug Parker shared more details on the cruise ship climber and other cruise news, including a young woman who was a tragically injured during a Bahamas excursion, on the May 19th edition of Cruise News Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Monday, May 19th. Arrested for trying to climb the side of a ship — yeah, over the weekend in Sydney, Australia, a man was caught scaling the mooring ropes of the Carnival Adventure as it was docked at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney. Video from bystanders showed a 29-year-old scaling the forward bow lines as crew and police coordinated together to bring him down safely. He was not injured but [was] arrested. He's been charged with three counts of unauthorized entry into restricted port zones. He's been released since and on conditional bail set to appear in court on June a Memphis family's graduation cruise turned tragic in the Bahamas [when] 22-year-old Hannah Smith was seriously injured after falling from an excursion boat and being struck by the propeller, which hit her lower extremities. This happened as the boat was returning to the cruise pier from an island off of Nassau. She underwent two surgeries in The Bahamas and is now back in the U.S. in critical condition with more surgeries ahead. Authorities have not said exactly how she went overboard. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with her long road to recovery. The description of this video includes a link to a Carnival cruise ship rescued five people drifting in a makeshift raft off the coast of Cuba. The Carnival Paradise, which was sailing from Tampa, spotted the group and brought them on board giving food, water, and medical attention. While some accepted the rescue, 10 others stayed in the raft and wanted to keep rolling. The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated the next steps for the rescued individuals. Princess Cruises ship gets banned from entering Caribbean port
If you've sailed on multiple Caribbean cruises, it's pretty likely that on one of your voyages, you've received the dreaded news that your ship will miss one of its planned ports of call. It happens most often when poor weather conditions prevent a cruise ship from entering a port. For example, on my very first cruise many years ago, rough seas led our captain to divert from the Cayman Islands toward better weather in Costa Maya, however, a different kind of reason prevents a cruise ship from visiting one of the destinations on its itinerary. Passengers sailing on Princess Cruises' Enchanted Princess just found out what that's like, as their ship was turned away from the highly anticipated final port of call on its Caribbean itinerary on May 22. Doug Parker shared details on why the Princess Cruises ship wasn't permitted to visit the destination, and other cruise news, on the May 23rd edition of Cruise News Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Friday, May 23rd. A cruise ship was turned away from the Grand Turk cruise port yesterday after dozens of passengers were sick. The Princess Cruises Enchanted Princess reported 50 cases of respiratory illnesses, flu, and stomach issues. Health officials reviewed the ship's medical report and decided the risk was just too high for the island. Because Grand Turk is so small and easy to get around, sick passengers could quickly spread the illnesses. Health Minister Kyle Knowles said that protecting residents and visitors comes first. Enchanted Princess is on a seven-night cruise from Port Everglades and returns Carnival Cruise Line is warning guests not to try sneaking into its exclusive Havana pool area using counterfeit or resold wristbands. Yeah, this is a story. Brand Ambassador John Heald says some passengers have been buying Havana access bands online and attempted to pass them off as premium guests. Carnival uses random wristband colors that change each cruise, and the crew are trained to spot intruders. Carnival says violators risk being removed from the area or even the ship. I'm Carnival Splendor's crew rescued four sailors and three dogs from a disabled catamaran in the South Pacific on Thursday morning. The ship was sailing just south of New Caledonia when it received a distress call and diverted course, reaching the vessel five hours later. The catamaran had suffered engine failure and a broken mast in bad weather. All four people and three dogs were safely brought on board and given food, water, and medical care. Carnival says the rescue won't impact the ship's itinerary. Way to the photo of the week comes from Connie: Carnival Luminosa here in Skagway, Alaska. Beautiful picture here. Got a nice rainbow, too.
