Although the tropics were quiet as the Atlantic hurricane season kicked off on June 1, May 30 and 31 brought unusually high winds to multiple ports around the world where cruise ships were docked.
Winds gusts in certain ports were so strong that large cruise ships struggled to remain tied up at their docks, creating rare dangerous situations for both passengers and crew from multiple cruise lines.Unfortunately, two of the three windy-weather related incidents even led to passenger injuries. In all cases, fast-acting crew members and port workers prevented the situation from becoming much worse though.
Whether a ship is docked in Alaska, Italy, or The Bahamas, cruise ship crew members are well trained to respond when Mother Nature decides to push mooring ropes and bollards to their breaking points.
Doug Parker shared more details on all three of the cruise ship accidents Mother Nature caused during the windy weekend, and other cruise news including Carnival Cruise Line's latest effort to enforce cruise rules, on the June 2 edition of Cruise News Today.Transcript:

Good morning. Here's your cruise news for Monday, June 2.
A windy weekend — Yeah, high winds knocked a gangway into the water off Holland America's Westerdam on Friday while docked in Ketchikan, Alaska. Gusts around 69 miles an hour caused the ropes to snap and the ship detached from the pier.
Tugboats though quickly came in and assisted the ship back to the pier now. No injuries were reported and a crane did lift the gangway out of the water. All passengers eventually re-boarded the Westerdam safely.And meanwhile in Sicily, strong winds caused a mooring bollard to give way sending a Norwegian Epic passenger into the water on Friday. The gangway collapsed as the ship started drifting away from the pier sending the woman into the bay. She was rescued by her husband and both were treated for minor injuries. The Norwegian Epic was delayed leaving port.
Now closer to home, an MSC ship broke free from the dock during a squall at Ocean Cay that injured one guest as well. Busy weekend.Carnival Cruise Line is reinforcing its 'Have Fun. Be Safe' policy with updated reminders now in every stateroom fleetwide. Rules include a 1 a.m curfew for minors, noise restrictions, and a $500 fine for doing things like smoking or tossing items overboard. And all illegal substances are prohibited even if it's legal in port.
This push follows a series of onboard incidents including a recent brawl in Galveston involving 24 passengers.And cruise stocks were up on Friday. Carnival Corporation: up slightly, 23.22, Royal Caribbean: up 1.1 percent, 256.97, Norwegian: up slightly, 17.65, and Viking: up a half percent — that's at 44.64.

Friday, June 6 forecast: Another stormy start to Saturday for some
We started the day with another round of rain and thunder. Heavy rainfall came with the risk of flooding, and there was some isolated severe weather as well. The most significant of which was in Wheaton, MO, where damage was confirmed to be caused by a tornado. The storms cleared out by afternoon and we even managed to end the day with some sun, but it looks like another stormy start is on the way. Mother Nature is following the same script for Saturday morning with a wave of storms expected to organize overnight to the west. The storms will sweep along a frontal boundary from Oklahoma into Arkansas near sunrise. The overall track looks a little further south than Friday morning's round, and this will likely shift the risk of severe weather for Saturday morning a bit further south as well. Flooding will be the main threat, mainly across Northern Arkansas, where rainfall amounts will be highest. In addition to a flooding risk, we will have a risk of damaging winds, including a limited tornado risk, mainly south of a Pineville, MO, to Harrison, AR, line. Storms should make a quick exit later in the morning, with some sun trying to develop during the afternoon. Another system passing by to the north could trigger some spotty showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. A few of these could produce some isolated hail or wind, mainly closer to the St. Louis area. Sunday will get off to a quiet start with areas of fog. Sunnier skies and warmer temperatures can be expected ahead of another wave of thunderstorms that will move in from the northwest along a cold front. A few of these storms could also produce some isolated hail or wind. We will start drying out on Monday. A break from the spring monsoon will be coming for the upcoming work week. The quieter stretch will come with less humidity and dry conditions. We'll likely need the umbrellas again, though by the end of next week. Often, when the U.S. State Department makes a significant change to its travel advisory for a country, it brings a stiffer warning for travelers. This time, however, one of the latest advisory updates will help to ease worries for some travelers considering popular Caribbean cruises that visit the destination on a number of cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity Cruises, and Disney Cruise revised travel advisory also gives the island's tourism industry reason to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The downgraded travel warning level comes not long after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged during a tour of the Caribbean that the U.S. would reevaluate its travel advisory to ensure that it reflected the progress the country has recently made in lowering its high violent crime rate. When he met with Rubio, the country's prime minister explained that the island is safer today than at any time in the last two decades. By collaborating with Rubio, he hoped to soon see his country's travel advisory updated to reflect the current state of affairs and help promote travel to the island. And on May 29, his wish came months after the meeting between Rubio and Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the State Department has updated its travel advisory for Jamaica, downgrading the warning level from Level 3: Reconsider Travel to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. Travelers with upcoming plans to visit Jamaica on a Caribbean cruise or another summer trip should keep in mind that although the advisory has been downgraded, it still recommends that travelers remain extra cautious in Jamaica due to high levels of violent crime. 'While violent crime in Jamaica has decreased since 2024, it remains statistically high throughout the country,' the advisory emphasizes. 'Tourist areas generally see lower rates of violent crime than other parts of the country. The homicide rate reported by the Government of Jamaica is among the highest in the Western Hemisphere. Armed robberies and sexual assaults are common.' The advisory also cautions that the U.S. Embassy receives regular reports of sexual assaults, including from U.S. travelers staying at Jamaican resorts.'U.S. citizens report slow or unsatisfactory response to serious criminal incidents,' the advisory adds. The State Department also wants travelers to be aware that medical services are limited in Jamaica. 'U.S. citizens should not expect the same level of health care available in Jamaica as is available in the United States,' the advisory states. 'This includes slower emergency service response times and less availability of care for illness or injury.' Additionally, the State Department recommends that U.S. citizens purchase travel insurance for Jamaica trips. 'Check with your travel insurance provider about evacuation assistance, medical insurance, and trip cancellation coverage,' the advisory ports in Jamaica include Falmouth, which is visited by cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Disney Cruise Line, as well as Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, visited by Carnival Cruise Line. Jamaica cruise ports are generally considered safe for tourists, but risks do exist. Cruise passengers visiting Jamaica should make sure to follow the State Department's guidance on ways to stay safe, which include: Avoid public buses. Avoid remote places. Do not physically resist any robbery attempt. Be aware of your surroundings and keep a low profile. Cruise passengers also need to be very careful not to accidentally bring firearms or ammunition, including stray rounds, shells, or empty casings, into Jamaican ports.'The penalties for carrying firearms or ammunition, even by mistake, are severe, and can include long prison sentences,' the State Department warns. For additional safety guidance for cruise ports in Jamaica, make sure to review any port-specific safety information provided by your cruise line and listen for any announcements from your ship's captain. You can also reduce your chances of becoming a target for criminals by booking shore excursions directly through your cruise line.
