Norwegian Cruise Line faces scary weather incident originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. Although the tropics were quiet as the Atlantic hurricane season kicked off on June 1, May 30 and 31 brought unusually high winds to multiple ports around the world where cruise ships were docked. Winds gusts in certain ports were so strong that large cruise ships struggled to remain tied up at their docks, creating rare dangerous situations for both passengers and crew from multiple cruise two of the three windy-weather related incidents even led to passenger injuries. In all cases, fast-acting crew members and port workers prevented the situation from becoming much worse though. Whether a ship is docked in Alaska, Italy, or The Bahamas, cruise ship crew members are well trained to respond when Mother Nature decides to push mooring ropes and bollards to their breaking points. Good morning. Here's your cruise news for Monday, June 2. A windy weekend — Yeah, high winds knocked a gangway into the water off Holland America's Westerdam on Friday while docked in Ketchikan, Alaska. Gusts around 69 miles an hour caused the ropes to snap and the ship detached from the pier. Tugboats though quickly came in and assisted the ship back to the pier now. No injuries were reported and a crane did lift the gangway out of the water. All passengers eventually re-boarded the Westerdam meanwhile in Sicily, strong winds caused a mooring bollard to give way sending a Norwegian Epic passenger into the water on Friday. The gangway collapsed as the ship started drifting away from the pier sending the woman into the bay. She was rescued by her husband and both were treated for minor injuries. The Norwegian Epic was delayed leaving port. Now closer to home, an MSC ship broke free from the dock during a squall at Ocean Cay that injured one guest as well. Busy Cruise Line is reinforcing its 'Have Fun. Be Safe' policy with updated reminders now in every stateroom fleetwide. Rules include a 1 a.m curfew for minors, noise restrictions, and a $500 fine for doing things like smoking or tossing items overboard. And all illegal substances are prohibited even if it's legal in port. This push follows a series of onboard incidents including a recent brawl in Galveston involving 24 cruise stocks were up on Friday. Carnival Corporation: up slightly, 23.22, Royal Caribbean: up 1.1 percent, 256.97, Norwegian: up slightly, 17.65, and Viking: up a half percent — that's at 44.64. Arrested for trying to climb the side of a ship — yeah, over the weekend in Sydney, Australia, a man was caught scaling the mooring ropes of the Carnival Adventure as it was docked at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney. Video from bystanders showed a 29-year-old scaling the forward bow lines as crew and police coordinated together to bring him down safely. He was not injured but [was] arrested. He's been charged with three counts of unauthorized entry into restricted port zones. He's been released since and on conditional bail set to appear in court on June a Memphis family's graduation cruise turned tragic in the Bahamas [when] 22-year-old Hannah Smith was seriously injured after falling from an excursion boat and being struck by the propeller, which hit her lower extremities. This happened as the boat was returning to the cruise pier from an island off of Nassau. She underwent two surgeries in The Bahamas and is now back in the U.S. in critical condition with more surgeries ahead. Authorities have not said exactly how she went overboard. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with her long road to recovery. The description of this video includes a link to a Carnival cruise ship rescued five people drifting in a makeshift raft off the coast of Cuba. The Carnival Paradise, which was sailing from Tampa, spotted the group and brought them on board giving food, water, and medical attention. While some accepted the rescue, 10 others stayed in the raft and wanted to keep rolling. The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated the next steps for the rescued individuals. Carnival Cruise Line ship hit hard by flooding during storm
Severe weather is something many cruise passengers never hope to experience during a vacation at sea, but sometimes it can't be avoided. A rainy day on a cruise is sometimes cause for disappointment, but usually doesn't result in more significant concerns like a missed port of call. Thunderstorms can disrupt or shut down certain cruise activities. though. including shore excursions, pools, and waterslides. And even without lightning, heavy rain can have an impact on cruises, but not just because it closes down the pool and sends passengers indoors. When rain comes down hard and fast on a cruise ship, it can actually flood certain areas of the ship as drainage systems struggle to keep up with the deluge of rainwater. That's what happened on board one Carnival cruise ship sailing through a heavy rainstorm in The Bahamas this week. Severe weather has caused major flooding aboard the Carnival Conquest currently sailing in The Bahamas. Passengers report water nearly entering cabins with balconies submerged and crew working nonstop to contain the flooding. The storm began Monday evening and is expected to continue through today. The Bahamas has been hit hard this week by that same weather front that moved through Florida earlier in the week. Related: Carnival shares cruise loyalty news; Royal Caribbean cruiser fined One guest sailing on Conquest told us that this is some of the worst flooding they've ever seen on a cruise ship. And Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas was diverted to Port Everglades on Tuesday to evacuate an injured guest. Yeah, the ship had left CocoCay earlier that day because lightning shut the island down. Around noon, an Alpha medical alert was issued for an injury in the ship's Central Park area. A later call requested Type O blood donors in which 30 passengers volunteered. The injured guest was transferred to a Broward County rescue boat around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Royal Caribbean refunded all excursions from CocoCay. And the cruise industry is now clarifying details on Mexico's new in-transit cruise passenger fee set to begin this summer. Now, unlike prior claims, this is an in-transit fee, not a non-resident duty tax. And the final rate kicks in a year later than initially reported. The fee will start at $5 per guest on July 1st, rising in stages to $21 by 2028. The change impacts all ships visiting Mexico.
