Although the tropics were quiet as the Atlantic hurricane season kicked off on June 1, May 30 and 31 brought unusually high winds to multiple ports around the world where cruise ships were docked.
Winds gusts in certain ports were so strong that large cruise ships struggled to remain tied up at their docks, creating rare dangerous situations for both passengers and crew from multiple cruise lines.

Unfortunately, two of the three windy-weather related incidents even led to passenger injuries. In all cases, fast-acting crew members and port workers prevented the situation from becoming much worse though.
Whether a ship is docked in Alaska, Italy, or The Bahamas, cruise ship crew members are well trained to respond when Mother Nature decides to push mooring ropes and bollards to their breaking points.
Doug Parker shared more details on all three of the cruise ship accidents Mother Nature caused during the windy weekend, and other cruise news including Carnival Cruise Line's latest effort to enforce cruise rules, on the June 2 edition of Cruise News Today.

Good morning. Here's your cruise news for Monday, June 2.
A windy weekend - Yeah, high winds knocked a gangway into the water off Holland America's Westerdam on Friday while docked in Ketchikan, Alaska. Gusts around 69 miles an hour caused the ropes to snap and the ship detached from the pier.
Tugboats though quickly came in and assisted the ship back to the pier now. No injuries were reported and a crane did lift the gangway out of the water. All passengers eventually re-boarded the Westerdam safely.

And meanwhile in Sicily, strong winds caused a mooring bollard to give way sending a Norwegian Epic passenger into the water on Friday. The gangway collapsed as the ship started drifting away from the pier sending the woman into the bay. She was rescued by her husband and both were treated for minor injuries. The Norwegian Epic was delayed leaving port.
Now closer to home, an MSC ship broke free from the dock during a squall at Ocean Cay that injured one guest as well. Busy weekend.

Carnival Cruise Line is reinforcing its "Have Fun. Be Safe" policy with updated reminders now in every stateroom fleetwide. Rules include a 1 a.m curfew for minors, noise restrictions, and a $500 fine for doing things like smoking or tossing items overboard. And all illegal substances are prohibited even if it's legal in port.
This push follows a series of onboard incidents including a recent brawl in Galveston involving 24 passengers.

And cruise stocks were up on Friday. Carnival Corporation: up slightly, 23.22, Royal Caribbean: up 1.1 percent, 256.97, Norwegian: up slightly, 17.65, and Viking: up a half percent - that's at 44.64.

‘Why is our ship leaving?': Mom and daughter stranded as Norwegian Epic breaks from port

'Why is our ship leaving?': Mom and daughter stranded as Norwegian Epic breaks from port Show Caption Hide Caption How to find the best price, perks when booking a cruise Find the cruise that works for your budget with these tips. Problem Solved High winds caused a Norwegian Epic cruise ship to detach from its mooring in Catania, Sicily, leaving passengers stranded on shore. One passenger fell into the water during the incident and others were left without communication from the cruise line for hours. The ship returned to port several hours later, and passengers were given $100 onboard credit and a future cruise discount. Travel insurance may cover expenses incurred due to itinerary changes and delays caused by such incidents. Jamie Cisco and her daughter, Grace, were at the beach in Catania, Sicily, when they saw their cruise ship moving away from the port without them. They looked at each other with confusion. 'Grace was like, 'Why is our ship leaving?'' Cisco told USA TODAY. 'I was like, 'I don't know.' We were told we had till 5:30 to re-enter the ship to leave again.' The Norwegian Epic ship separated from the pier on May 30 during high winds, causing a guest to fall from the gangway into the water and leaving others stuck on shore. 'Our concern was always the person that fell in that they were OK … but the lack of communication was just completely unacceptable and uncalled for,' the Illinois resident said. Cisco was among a number of guests temporarily left behind – and it's not the only recent incident of its kind. 'Just a free for all' The pair took the 10-day Mediterranean cruise to celebrate Cisco's 50th birthday. After leaving the beach, where the gusts were so strong they couldn't lay their blankets flat on the ground, they returned to the port, only receiving updates of the situation on board from other guests in a Facebook group. Cisco said Norwegian did not immediately communicate updates directly to guests who were on shore for most of the day. When they arrived, the cruise ship was gone. According to Cisco, a member of the Facebook group wrote that the port authority had ordered the vessel out of port, adding to their confusion. They walked the 15 to 20 minutes to town and back again, seeing a cruise line employee for the first time around 5:30 p.m., who told them to return two hours later. 'Some people opted just to stay there, but there was no water (and) there was very little shade,' she recalled. Cisco and her daughter also only had what they needed for a beach day. At one point, after she pulled a muscle in her leg while walking around Catania, they had to go searching for pain medicine. By around 7:15 p.m., the ship had made its way back to the port. 'And when they got permission to open the gates, it was just a free-for-all,' Cisco said. 'People were just pushing and shoving.' Back on board, she said the ship's crew warmly welcomed them back and the captain apologized over the speakers. The incident caused the ship to depart late from Catania, and Cisco said the captain announced the next morning that its planned stop in Naples had been canceled – between half an hour to an hour after they were scheduled to disembark. Was your cruise itinerary changed?: Here's what to do next A May 31 letter to guests, reviewed by USA TODAY, said the ship's mooring lines parted after three bollards on the pier broke amid 'unexpectedly strong gale-force winds.' 'After this incident, the Harbor Master ordered us to leave the port to wait offshore until the wind had calmed down,' the note read. Guests were given $100 in onboard credit per cabin, but Cisco said she and her daughter missed their $200 excursion in Naples booked outside the cruise line. She plans to submit a claim to her travel insurance provider. 'We get home late on Thursday, so I imagine on Friday I'll be spending a lot of time on the phone trying to get this sorted.' Norwegian also gave passengers a 10% future cruise credit, according to the letter Cisco received. 'During this interruption, our crew were actively attending to our guests until they were able to re-embark the ship,' a spokesperson for the cruise line told USA TODAY earlier this week. 'As always the safety of our guests and crew is our top priority.' Norwegian did not immediately share a comment on Cisco's experience. Does travel insurance cover an incident like this? While those incidents are relatively rare, it's not the only one of its kind in recent years. Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Magic ship hit a pier in Jamaica during windy weather in February 2024, forcing it to move away and temporarily leave guests on shore. Winds have also caused MSC Cruises and Cunard Line ships to break from their moorings. Meghan Walch, Director of Product at InsureMyTrip, said travelers should start by contacting their cruise line, which 'will likely (and hopefully) cover expenses that the travelers were forced to pay due to the ship drifting off its moorings.' In the event of a missed independent excursion like Cisco's, travel insurance itinerary change benefits can come in handy. 'Typically, the cruise line would have to make a change in the itinerary after departure, and there would need to be verification from the cruise line that there was a change in the itinerary,' Walch said in an email. 'So, there could be coverage for the missed excursion if there is proof from the cruise line, and all other requirements are met.' If the incident causes the ship to be late by the plan's required number of hours, travel delay benefits may take effect – if the policyholder paid for food, transportation or lodging during the delay. Injuries sustained from those kinds of incidents may also fall under emergency medical coverage. 'Again, it's important to not only know what the cruise line will cover – but travelers should also know what is covered under their specific travel insurance policy,' she added. Cisco had hoped to visit Sorrento and missed a scheduled limoncello tasting, but she ultimately took the inconvenience in stride. 'Thankfully, there's lots of limoncello in Italy.' Passengers stranded for 7 hours after Norwegian Epic breaks moorings in heavy winds

A routine port stop turned chaotic for thousands of passengers aboard Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Epic last Friday when severe winds caused the ship to break free from its moorings in Catania, on the Italian island of Sicily. The incident began around 1 p.m. local time when powerful 60-mph wind gusts struck the vessel's port side. Witnesses reported hearing loud cracking sounds as the mooring lines began snapping one by one, causing the ship's stern to drift away from the dock. "We heard a very loud boom, and then there was another loud noise and screams," passenger Brian Koning, who was returning to the ship with his wife at the time, said in a Facebook post. "All those large orange diameter ropes started snapping about every 15 seconds." During the incident, a female passenger fell from the gangway. Koning said the woman hit her head on something before landing in the water, prompting her husband to leap in to save her. Norwegian Cruise Line noted that the crew rushed to help the pair. "On-duty crew members were able to immediately assist the guest from the water and see that they were evaluated by the medical team," a company spokesperson told ABC News in a statement. "It was determined that they sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for further examination and treatment." MORE: Cruise ship saves passengers, pets from disabled catamaran in South Pacific The incident left more than 3,600 passengers stranded ashore for over seven hours, according to Koning. Port authorities closed the checkpoint as the ship was forced to move out to sea until conditions improved. "The disembarkation and embarkation process was paused until weather conditions improved and the ship was able to safely dock again," Norwegian Cruise Line told ABC News. Passengers were frustrated with how the company handled of the situation, according to Koning. "There was no communication from anyone from Norwegian Cruise Line," Koning said. "People started getting irritated. They took the water away, there was no drinks, no food, and only one bathroom with a couple of toilets." The ship eventually returned to port after replacing the broken mooring lines, allowing passengers to reboard that evening.

Cruise passenger falls into sea after ship separates from pier in Sicily

(NEXSTAR) – A cruise passenger attempting to disembark at a port in Sicily fell into the Ionian Sea on Friday after the ship separated from the pier during strong winds, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed. The passenger, who was on the gangway when the incident occurred, was not seriously injured. Florida port workers accused of stealing thousands worth of cruise terminal artwork 'On duty crew members were able to immediately assist the guest from the water and see that they were evaluated by the medical team,' the spokesperson said. 'It was determined that they sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for further examination and treatment.' The Norwegian Epic had departed from Civitavecchia, near Rome, on May 24 with planned stops at ports in Greece, Malta, Sicily, the western coast of Italy and France before returning to Civitavecchia on June 3. But after the incident, which occurred while docked in Catania, Sicily, passengers were delayed from disembarking and reembarking 'until weather conditions improved,' a spokesperson said. Video shared to social media also appears to show two moorings coming loose during the gusty weather, violently striking the back of the ship. A spokesperson for the cruise line was unable to comment on the video. NCL's spokesperson did not provide any additional statement on the passenger, nor whether they continued with the voyage after the incident. 'As always the safety of our guests and crew is our top priority,' the spokesperson said. The Norwegian Epic was en route from Cannes, France, to Civitavecchia on Tuesday.
