Anwar extends condolences to Abang Johari after wife Juma'ani dies
KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his condolences to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg following the death of the latter's wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Hajjah Juma'ani Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang, early this morning.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, were saddened by the news and conveyed their prayers to the grieving family.
'Our thoughts are with the family of the late Juma'ani, especially Abang Jo, whom I had just met yesterday,' he said.
'May they remain patient and strong in facing this test,' he added.
Juma'ani died at 3.34am today at Normah Medical Center in Kuching.
Her last rites are set to be held between 10am and 12pm at the Semariang Muslim Cemetery following funeral prayers at Masjid Jamek, Petra Jaya, Kuching.

Student activists face police probe, possible expulsion after caricature of PM set ablaze during rally
KOTA KINABALU, June 23 — Student activists involved in the weekend rally Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 may face both police action and expulsion for their action seen as extreme during the rally. Sabah police chief Datuk Jauteh Dikun said that they were investigating the students for allegedly failing to comply with conditions set under the Peaceful Assembly Act including the burning of a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'We have received about six police reports so far and opened three investigation papers. There are about nine offences identified for example incitement involving the 3Rs, burning in a public space and bringing flammable materials to the gathering,' he said. Jauteh said that they have started to call the students in, and have yet to take statements from any of the students. He also clarified reports that the gathering was 'approved' by the police, but that there were provisions under the Peaceful Assembly Act which outlined the procedure, beginning with the notification by organisers and followed by a response from the district police. 'We have given them a response but this is by no means an 'approval'. They are still subject to the law and we will investigate any incidents contrary to the guidelines,' he said. 'In my view, the student groups have miscommunicated the facts. They claimed they received 'approval' from the police, which is not true. 'There were even lawyers present — they should know better. The police merely issued a response, not an approval, as per the Peaceful Assembly Act,' he said. He also said that police would investigate reports from the students that a man, allegedly 'dressed to resemble a Special Branch officer' had damaged one of their cars with acid. Meanwhile, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Kasim Mansor said that they have identified 13 students from the rally who may face disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion, under the Universities and University College Act (Amended) 2012 (Auku). Out of the 13, two students were directly involved in burning the caricature of the Prime Minister, an act the university strongly condemns. He said a disciplinary committee comprising appointed academicians would be formed soon to investigate the matter and determine appropriate action under Auku. 'The committee will call each student individually to give their explanation regarding the incident that occurred during Sunday's rally,' he said. The student rally, organised by a group calling themselves 'Suara Mahasiswa UMS' took place in the city centre, starting at Suria Sabah shopping centre, and made its way through the city on the main roads before stopping at Gaya street's Lintasan Deasoka where they planned a sit in. The rally was attended by around 100 or so people, mostly students but also civil society, demanding action on corrupt officials and better governance, including a solution to the perennial water shortage especially in the university. The rally was mostly uneventful, garnering attention from passers-by as they marched the streets with placards even under the rain with police monitoring traffic and public order. However, yesterday, it took a turn when the students set fire to a hand-drawn caricature of the prime minister, which was seen as overstepping boundaries and too extreme by some groups. The students justified their move by saying they had ensured a safe distance between participants and the public with their symbolic gimmick and wanted a bold move to get their message across against the Madani government. They also cleaned up the burn marks on the ground with brushes and soap after the incident.

PKR Sarawak extends condolences over passing of Sarawak Premier's wife
Roland Engan MIRI (June 23): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak extended its deepest condolences to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his family following the passing of his beloved wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang. In a statement today, PKR Sarawak chairman Roland Engan described the late Juma'ani as a devoted wife and loyal confidante who stood by the premier throughout his political journey. 'She was everything to him — a wife, friend and source of strength behind his leadership. Her quiet but firm presence over the years was admired by many,' he said. Roland said PKR leaders and supporters across the state join all Sarawakians in mourning her passing. 'We share the sorrow of the Premier and the people of Sarawak. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may the Premier and his family find strength in this difficult time,' he said. He said several party leaders who attended the State Gawai Dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on Sunday night saw the premier leave the event abruptly due to what appeared to be an urgent matter. 'Only later did we learn of her passing — it was truly a heartbreaking moment for all of us,' he said. Juma'ani, 76, passed away at a private medical centre in Kuching at 3.34am today. She was the daughter of Sarawak's second Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Tuanku Bujang Tuanku Othman.

Malaysia inks landmark trade deal with EFTA nations
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states have signed an economic partnership agreement, marking a new chapter for trade, investment and economic relations with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) said both Malaysia and the EFTA member states also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation and capacity building, as well as a joint statement on sustainable palm oil. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Aziz, said it is important for Malaysia, as a trading nation, to maintain its neutral and non-aligned stance, particularly in the face of current geopolitical uncertainties that complicate the global trading landscape. He said the unwavering neutrality and non-alignment is also reflected in the signing of the Malaysia-European Free Trade Association Economic Partnership Agreement (MEEPA). He noted that it is the country's 18th free trade agreement (FTA) thus far, and is part of an enhanced attempt to diversify markets amidst global economic uncertainties. "As Malaysia's first FTA with several European countries, the MEEPA is also expected to pave the way for expedited Malaysia-EU FTA negotiations. "The trade potential to be realised will provide more business opportunities for local companies, including small and medium enterprises, and offer higher-paying jobs for Malaysians – both key in driving our economic transformation agenda," he said in a statement. The MEEPA was signed by Tengku Zafrul and his counterparts representing Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. MEEPA covers goods, services, investments, intellectual property rights, customs facilitation, competition policy, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, trade and sustainable development, government procurement and economic cooperation. MITI said it is expected to bring new export opportunities and enable Malaysia to continue attracting high-technology and knowledge-based investments from these four non-EU member countries. Upon entry into force, the agreement guarantees long-term duty-free access for over 90 per cent of Malaysia's exports to the four signatory countries. This includes all industrial products and secures benefits that were previously available under the temporary Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) scheme. In 2024, Malaysia's trade with the EFTA was valued at RM14.4 billion, with over 85 per cent of its exports to these countries being industrial products covering electrical and electronics, optical and scientific instruments, metal products, plastics and rubber-based products. Switzerland accounted for over 80 per cent of trade, amounting to RM12.2 billion, followed by Norway at RM2.1 billion. Cumulatively, Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein have invested RM14.2 billion in Malaysia, resulting in the creation of over 24,000 job opportunities. A prime example is Lembaga Koko Malaysia's collaboration with the renowned Swiss-based company Nestlé to develop KitKat Dark Borneo, a premium single-origin chocolate crafted exclusively from Malaysian cocoa beans. In the area of services, Malaysian professionals, encompassing accountants, auditors, lawyers, physiotherapists, nurses and teachers, are expected to benefit from enhanced access and mobility through transparent rules in the EFTA markets. The agreement includes a strong agenda for cooperation and capacity building, focusing on engineering, technology, green mobility, digitalisation, pharmaceuticals, and human capital development through training and exchanges. During the MEEPA signing, Tengku Zafrul also witnessed the MoU exchange between Universiti Teknologi Petronas and two Norwegian universities, namely the University of South-Eastern Norway and the University of Stavanger. The initiative seeks to foster academic collaboration and specialised expertise in hydrogen technology, carbon capture and storage, as well as in related fields across the oil, gas, marine and shipping, and renewable energy sectors. The collaborative ventures are expected to contribute towards the sustainable development of a skilled talent pool and long-term growth of industries by enhancing the quality of Malaysia's higher education and translational research.
