PKR Sarawak extends condolences over passing of Sarawak Premier's wife
MIRI (June 23): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak extended its deepest condolences to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his family following the passing of his beloved wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang.
In a statement today, PKR Sarawak chairman Roland Engan described the late Juma'ani as a devoted wife and loyal confidante who stood by the premier throughout his political journey.
'She was everything to him — a wife, friend and source of strength behind his leadership. Her quiet but firm presence over the years was admired by many,' he said.
Roland said PKR leaders and supporters across the state join all Sarawakians in mourning her passing.
'We share the sorrow of the Premier and the people of Sarawak. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may the Premier and his family find strength in this difficult time,' he said.
He said several party leaders who attended the State Gawai Dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on Sunday night saw the premier leave the event abruptly due to what appeared to be an urgent matter.
'Only later did we learn of her passing — it was truly a heartbreaking moment for all of us,' he said.
Juma'ani, 76, passed away at a private medical centre in Kuching at 3.34am today.
She was the daughter of Sarawak's second Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Tuanku Bujang Tuanku Othman.

On Aug 31, a Unity Walk will be held at Sarikei Stadium starting at 7am. "The event will bring together participants from all walks of life as a symbol of community strength and unity," she said. Participants will receive Unity Walk shirts but are also encouraged to wear traditional Sarawakian ethnic attire or accessories. Fatimah called on all Sarawakians to come together and enliven the celebration by flying the Jalur Gemilang at their homes, business premises and vehicles as a sign of loyalty and love for the nation.

Sivarasa dismisses bid to nullify Anwar's election as baseless
by NURUL NAJMIN ABU BAKAR PKR'S R Sivarasa (picture) has rejected a legal challenge by former Federal Minister P Waytha Moorthy, seeking to disqualify Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Tambun MP and prime minister (PM), as baseless. Waytha, who served in Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Cabinet from 2018 to 2020, is asking the High Court to declare Anwar's Nov 19, 2022, election win in Tambun and his appointment as PM five days later null and void. He contends that the royal pardon granted to the PKR president in 2018 did not explicitly exempt him from the five-year disqualification period for contesting an election after release from prison. Sivarasa said such reasoning reflected a failure to understand the proper application of Article 48 of the Federal Constitution, which sets out the circumstances under which an MP can be disqualified. He said it was a matter of public record that Anwar received a full and free pardon in 2018 from the then King, who viewed the conviction as a miscarriage of justice. 'The inclusion of the words 'and who has not received a free pardon' in Article 48 makes clear that once a free pardon is granted, a prior conviction no longer serves as a disqualifying factor. 'It is a trite principle in law, which unfortunately Waytha Moorthy does not appear to appreciate, that the effect of a full and free pardon is to wipe away a conviction completely. It is as if the conviction and sentence never occurred at all,' he said in a statement. Sivarasa, who heads PKR's legal bureau, questioned why the issue had not been raised by Anwar's opponents during the Tambun campaign, nor when he was appointed as PM in November 2022. 'One wonders why he took two and three-quarter years to suddenly wake up one morning having dreamed up this fatuous point. Is this case really more about trying to stay politically relevant in any possible way?' he added. DAP's Syahredzan Johan also questioned whether Waytha's suit was connected to his recent meeting with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia leaders. The Bangi MP said that while anyone had the right to file court proceedings, the suit appeared 'frivolous and vexatious' given that Anwar has been PM for nearly three years. Waytha, who is president of the Malaysian Advancement Party, was among several political leaders outside the government bloc who met Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin recently to discuss forming a united Opposition front. — TMR

Dr M arrives at Shah Alam court for defamation proceedings against Anwar
SHAH ALAM: The arrival of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was no quiet affair at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Court Complex as he attended proceedings linked to his RM150 million suit against prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The 100-year-old two-time former prime minister's presence set the lobby abuzz as he made his way to the upper floor of the complex. A crowd had been building up at the complex entrance since 8am in anticipation of Dr Mahathir's arrival. The main entrance was closed to the public, with access restricted to those who had court matters. Dr Mahathir will be attending case management proceedings at the civil High Court before judicial commissioner Datuk Donald Joseph Franklin. The trial is expected to begin tomorrow. The case was reassigned to Donald following the transfer of judicial commissioner Zaharah Hussain. In his suit, Dr Mahathir alleged that Anwar tarnished his reputation by accusing him of being racist and of enriching himself and his family members during his 22-year tenure as prime minister. He claimed that Anwar made the remarks during PKR's special national congress at the Melawati Stadium in Shah Alam on March 18, 2023. Anwar had allegedly referred to someone "who in the past had been in power for 22 years and an additional 22 months" as taking advantage of his position to enrich himself and his family. Anwar, who did not specify any name during the speech, also said this person later complained about the Malays losing everything after he was no longer in power. Dr Mahathir said he had never been accused or convicted of any wrongdoing involving abuse of power or misuse of funds, either during or after his time as prime minister. He argued that Anwar's remarks were unfounded and based only on media hearsay. Dr Mahathir said it was vital that Anwar, as prime minister, ensure his statements were grounded in fact and not rumours. He said that all his income had been audited to ensure there was no deceit in tax payments or in the source of his earnings. He is seeking RM100 million in exemplary damages and RM50 million in general damages, as well as a written apology and a special press conference for Anwar to publicly retract his remarks.
