Dr M arrives at Shah Alam court for defamation proceedings against Anwar
The 100-year-old two-time former prime minister's presence set the lobby abuzz as he made his way to the upper floor of the complex.
A crowd had been building up at the complex entrance since 8am in anticipation of Dr Mahathir's arrival.
The main entrance was closed to the public, with access restricted to those who had court matters.
Dr Mahathir will be attending case management proceedings at the civil High Court before judicial commissioner Datuk Donald Joseph Franklin.
The trial is expected to begin tomorrow.
The case was reassigned to Donald following the transfer of judicial commissioner Zaharah Hussain.
In his suit, Dr Mahathir alleged that Anwar tarnished his reputation by accusing him of being racist and of enriching himself and his family members during his 22-year tenure as prime minister.
He claimed that Anwar made the remarks during PKR's special national congress at the Melawati Stadium in Shah Alam on March 18, 2023.
Anwar had allegedly referred to someone "who in the past had been in power for 22 years and an additional 22 months" as taking advantage of his position to enrich himself and his family.
Anwar, who did not specify any name during the speech, also said this person later complained about the Malays losing everything after he was no longer in power.
Dr Mahathir said he had never been accused or convicted of any wrongdoing involving abuse of power or misuse of funds, either during or after his time as prime minister.
He argued that Anwar's remarks were unfounded and based only on media hearsay.
Dr Mahathir said it was vital that Anwar, as prime minister, ensure his statements were grounded in fact and not rumours.
He said that all his income had been audited to ensure there was no deceit in tax payments or in the source of his earnings.
He is seeking RM100 million in exemplary damages and RM50 million in general damages, as well as a written apology and a special press conference for Anwar to publicly retract his remarks.

Court orders Caprice to remove defamatory posts against entrepreneur
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has ordered rapper Caprice to archive 31 allegedly defamatory Instagram posts targeting entrepreneur Muhammad Asyraf Khalid. Judge Datuk Anand Ponnudurai granted an ex-parte ad-interim injunction following a suit filed by Muhammad Asyraf, stepson of Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin. Lawyer Abdul Hakeem Aiman confirmed the posts must be archived immediately until the inter-parte injunction hearing on September 2. Caprice, whose real name is Ariz Ramli, has yet to file a defence statement in response to the lawsuit. Muhammad Asyraf initiated the suit on August 4, citing defamatory posts published between July 30 and August 2. The posts allegedly portrayed Muhammad Asyraf negatively for hosting Murad Zaidi, his personal trainer, on a podcast. 'I invited Murad to discuss gym management challenges and clarify his Instagram statements denying allegations,' said Muhammad Asyraf. The posts also insinuated that Muhammad Asyraf misused family influence as the son of Datuk Seri Khalid Mohammad Jiwa. Despite not airing the full podcast episode, Caprice continued attacking Muhammad Asyraf publicly. The lawsuit claims Caprice's actions led to public backlash and tarnished Muhammad Asyraf's reputation. Muhammad Asyraf seeks an injunction to prevent further defamatory posts and demands their removal within 24 hours. He also requests a public video apology from Caprice across all social media platforms. The plaintiff is seeking general damages, aggravated damages, and legal costs. The case will proceed with an inter-parte hearing on September 2. - Bernama

The Securities Commission of Malaysia building in Kuala Lumpur KUALA LUMPUR: The Securities Commission Malaysia's (SC) Audit Oversight Board (AOB) has prohibited Ahmad Aljafree Mohd Razalli from accepting as clients and auditing any public interest entities or schedule funds for a one-year period, starting April 30, 2025. In a statement today, the SC said the AOB also imposed a fine of RM50,000 on Ahmad Aljafree, who is a partner of Al Jafree Salihin Kuzaimi PLT, an audit firm registered with the AOB. It said Ahmad Aljafree was the engagement partner of a public listed company (PLC) client for the financial years ended June 30, 2020 and June 30, 2021. "He failed to comply with the relevant International Standards on Auditing in the areas of prior year adjustments, property, plant and equipment, opening balances and consolidation,' it added. The SC said Ahmad Aljafree appealed to the commission against the AOB's imposed penalty but did not appeal against the prohibitions imposed. "The SC dismissed the appeal and affirmed the AOB's decision on the monetary penalty,' it said. - Bernama
