Armani Couture Paid Homage to A Bygone Film Archetype

Elle08-07-2025
When a collection is almost devoid of color, right down to the grayscale makeup, it's difficult to not immediately conjure ideas of the silver screen. Intrigue, intense beauty, and glistening gowns often evoke traditional images of femme fatales and seductive heroines. But this season at Armani couture, while these elements were undoubtedly present, something more interesting lay in the mix. Nestled among stunning signature liquid dresses in the historic Palazzo Armani, the collection paid homage to the long-lost archetype of the female dandy. A modern Marlene Dietrich strutting down the runway, cigarette holder and all.
In this context, a traditional tuxedo almost becomes a perverse suggestion, especially when there are so many ways to play with it. Why not craft a low-cut evening gown whose neckline is trimmed with lapels and pair it with an invisibly fastened floating bow tie, oversized fan, and pointed-toe shoes, calling to mind a glamorous woman of a bygone era who entertains in house slippers more often than stilettos? That is the Armani question. Don't wear a shirt underneath the embroidered jacket—or do—as long as it's totally and completely extravagant.
Military-style equestrian jackets also enjoyed a cameo; the style was shown both on a dress bodice and paired with skinny velvet pants. (Given that it has recently adorned other runways, including Dior menswear, all signs point towards a renaissance.) Where there was color, it served to bolster the intensity of the film noir effect, as if floral embroidery or blue, pink, and green peek-a-boo feathers poking from an oversized charcoal feathered coat could become even more luxurious.
For the finale, the models dropped the cinematic veil and cheered. Armani Privé recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, which coincides with the half-centennial of Armani itself. 'Haute couture has allowed me to explore a different side of my style, one that is both complementary and alternative to prêt-à-porter, yet unified by the search for a timeless, linear, and high-end signature style,' the designer told ELLE on the occasion. 'I would describe these years as the story of another Armani—freer and more glittering—but still unmistakably the Armani that everyone knows.' Shimmering with creativity and saturated with seduction it is.

Miley Cyrus Loves Dancing Through Her Perfume

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. If you caught a whiff of Miley Cyrus right now, she'd want you to breathe her in and appreciate that she smells intense, strong, and soft. Her new scent comes from being the face of Gucci's latest perfume, Gorgeous Gardenia Intense. But it also echoes her newest album, Something Beautiful, which celebrates dualities and seeing beauty in pain and imperfection. spent a few minutes with Cyrus talking about endings and beginnings and what is bringing her bliss this summer. When talking about your new album, Something Beautiful, you've said that you found the beauty in life's darkest moments. What is an example of that? You can miss something or someone deeply, while still looking forward to what is to come next. Like destruction, death, disappointment—they all can be looked at as an ending, but I've always seen them as the beginning of something new. How do you feel now that Something Beautiful is out? Has it been received as you had hoped? It's been a dream to create something and watch it live independently out in the world. [It has] taught me a new sense of trust that everything happens in the way that was divinely planned, to learn to let go and to enjoy the process as much as success. You've been the face of a few Gucci scents now. What does this one smell like to you? I love the name Intense. Although a flower is soft and subtle, there is still an intensity in its strength and self-sufficiency. How does intensity manifest in your life? Everything I do is at a 10. I've always been that way. I run on passion and inspiration, and so no matter what it is, big or small, my heart has to be on fire to even entertain whatever it is. This fragrance is meant to celebrate bliss. What brings you bliss? The summer sun, hiking and being in nature with animals, swimming in waterfalls, and laughing with people I love. What do you think your inner child smells like? My grandmother, because I was always sitting with her, and her perfume would rub off on me. When I'd go back to my parents, she was still with me in some way. In your song with Naomi Campbell, 'Every Girl You Ever Loved,' one of your lyrics references the 'perfect scent.' What makes a scent perfect to you? Something that is subtle, sweet, but still very present and memorable. How would you say your fragrance preferences have evolved along with your persona over the years? As I have matured, I have a new idea of romance, and I think what I gravitate toward reflects that. What's your spritz ritual? I like to spray it into the air and dance under it, giving it some life and keeping the scent subtle. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Jamie Lee Curtis on the Lindsay Lohan Plastic Surgery Rumors

Jamie Lee Curtis isn't shy about talking about her personal views on plastic surgery, but when it comes to commenting on her peers, she's not interested. Need proof? When asked about the speculation surrounding Lindsay Lohan and plastic surgery, Jamie Lee Curtis had a simple answer: She couldn't care less! The Freakier Friday star recently opened up about her position on plastic surgery in a new interview with The Guardian, which included an original photoshoot to which the actor brought her own props, including giant wax lips. 'The wax lips is my statement against plastic surgery,' she said. 'I've been very vocal about the genocide of a generation of women by the cosmeceutical industrial complex, who've disfigured themselves. The wax lips really sends it home.' In case you were wondering, yes she did mean to use the word 'genocide' to describe the seemingly never-ending popularity of plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures. 'I believe that we have wiped out a generation or two of natural human [appearance],' she explained. 'The concept that you can alter the way you look through chemicals, surgical procedures, fillers—there's a disfigurement of generations of predominantly women who are altering their appearances.' Of course, Jamie's Freakier Friday co-star Lindsay Lohan has been caught up in a lot of online speculation about plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures. Lindsay herself admitted to using Botox and laser treatments in a recent interview with Elle, but she hasn't commented on any surgical interventions. When asked whether or not Jamie was concerned that younger actors—like Lindsay—might feel judged by her staunchly anti-plastic surgery stance, Jamie wasn't worried. 'No, no. Because I don't care. It doesn't matter. I'm not proselytizing to them,' she said. 'I would never say a word. I would never say to someone: What have you done?' That said, she continued, 'All I know is that it is a never-ending cycle. That I know. Once you start, you can't stop. But it's not my job to give my opinion; it's none of my business.'

‘The Hunting Wives' Showrunner Teases a Potential Season 2 (With More Murder)

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. Some spoilers below. Maple Brook, Texas, has a murder problem. In Netflix's latest soapy mystery thriller The Hunting Wives, the Southern enclave becomes the scene of not one but multiple (four, by my count) homicides, each somehow connected to the titular gun-toting wives at its center. Most dominant amongst them is Margo (Malin Åkerman), wife of the oil tycoon and gubernatorial candidate Jed (Dermot Mulroney), with whom she shares an open marriage. That open door beckons in Sophie (Brittany Snow), who's relocated from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Maple Brook with her husband, only to fall in with Margo and her MAGA-coded pack—and fall into a love affair with Margot herself. Eventually, the multiple affairs connecting these characters result in multiple deaths (who could have guessed!), setting the stage for a delicious finale the chance for a second season. Here's what we know so far. Mercifully, none of the people depicted in The Hunting Wives are real. But their story is adapted from a 2021 thriller novel by May Cobb, which is itself inspired by some of Cobb's real-life experiences in Texas. As Åkerman recently told Town & Country, '[Cobb] was on set a lot, she's an executive producer of the show, and the book is based on people that she has met—not necessarily the murders, though. But we had a lot of discussions, and talking to May about who she met and hearing her stories of these different women was informative for our characters.' She also added that '[showrunner] Rebecca Cutter and May decided to swap a few things from the book so that fans are surprised as well.' All of which is to say: Whether or not you've read The Hunting Wives before tuning into the Netflix series, you're in for a twisty ride. The cast and crew certainly want one. After scooping up the series from Starz in a one-year deal earlier this summer, Netflix has yet to announce what the future of the series might look like. But its talent have demonstrated a clear interest in moving forward. In a pre-release interview with Decider, Ackerman shared that she was nervous for the series to drop on Netflix largely because she wants it to continue. 'I think the nerves come from, for me, really wanting this to go for a second season,' she said, adding, 'because I love everybody that I got to work with and it would be a dream come true to go again. So my nerves are around the fact that I just want and wish for everyone to love it so much that we get another season.' In a separate interview with Collider, Snow also expressed her enthusiasm for a sophomore chapter. 'I think the end [of season 1] is really interesting, and I know that we would deal with it in season 2,' she said. 'There are a lot of questions that didn't get answered because Rebecca wants to answer them in the next season if we get one.' Should Cutter get the green light she's hoping for, she plans to 'do a little bit of a time jump—not a year, but a time' between seasons, she told Variety. She's not yet sure what the ensuing story might look like, but one thing is for certain: Season 2 would center 'the two engines of the show': a 'whodunit' and 'the Margo/Sophie relationship.' Cutter continued, 'The first thing I'm thinking about is, where are these two women at the start? Where are they at the end? What are the peaks and valleys of their individual power, of their relationship? So it's tracking a course for that, and then figuring out what the crime engine is.' As for the 'crime engine' itself, expect another murder mystery. But don't ask for any details yet! Cutter joked, 'I don't know whodunit yet or who got done!' This story will be updated.
